Stumbled across this place late last night while pulling into Dothan. What a gem, the food was amazing. The waitress suggested a Kabob or Curry. I went with the chicken kabob with some butter naan bread and a side of curry dipping sauce. My mean was Amazing. The staff was very friendly, and the place is clean and updated. Tan had great service and a great atmosphere. I loved how our big group was seated quickly and in a low traffic area. I got the mango curry chicken and it was okay. I wish I had gotten a higher spice level. Also one of our friends let me try her goat in mango curry and I was immediately jealous. The flavor of the curry didn't taste the name nor did it even look the same color as my chicken curry. If I go back, the goat in mango curry is what I'm getting hands down. First Time Trying Indian Food -- I'm Hooked! I'll admit it--this was my very first time having Indian food, and I tried to play it cool. But from the moment I walked in, I knew I was in for something special. The vibe inside the restaurant is warm and welcoming, and it really set the mood for what turned out to be an amazing experience. My server was so friendly and helpful--she made me feel comfortable right away and made sure I had everything I needed without missing a beat. I've now been here three times the first two times were back to back days lol. This place doesn't miss. Its an abbsolute gem here in little Dothan Alabama. I always sit at the bar and the bartenders are cool as hell. They make a great top shelf on Long Island. For the food I mean...wow. I always get the vegetarian simosas which are perhaps the best I've ever had. They are absolutely fantastic-light crispy and very delicious. So far I've gotten the tikka masala with a chicken and garlic naan. It is so damn good I can't stand it. This place is my favorite restaurant in the town. I'm a recent transplant from Detroit. While traveling, we stopped for the night and Dothan, Alabama. We asked the desk person at our hotel for a restaurant recommendation. She told us that Taj was really good. We arrived and we were seated immediately and everything smelled great! What a good way to start. The restaurant was decorated nicely and appeared to be clean. Our waitress Sierra was very friendly and helpful. She helped us with our order and the food came very quickly. We started with Punjabi samosas. They came with tamarind and chili sauces on the side. They were both delicious. For our main course, my wife had the Tiki Masala with paneer cheese, and I had the Palak paneer. We also ordered garlic naan with cheese. Everything was really tasty. Finally, good Indian food the best we have had outside of LA or DC. In Dothan of all places, life is full of surprises. The Taj is a cavern of a place and was packed at 5.00pm on a Tuesday. Indian Owners, Indian food, Mexican Food and Middle Eastern Food. Something for everyone in your group. The owner has taken the concept to New Delhi because they are starved of Mexican food. Lamb Sagwalla and Lamb Methi were tremendous and yes we would drive 90 miles to go get it again rather than eat the Emerald Coast offerings. Don't order spicy go for 1-2 then you can taste the true flavor of the food. There is a full bar and the bar space itself is delightful with subtle lighting. Music was playing loudly when we went in but upon asking, the owner graciously turned it down. Service was outstanding and super professional. read more

I recently visited for the first time... Taj is a beautiful restaurant! I came with a group and they accommodated us nicely. The menu has many options... something for everyone! I ordered a chicken tikki dish that came out hot and sizzling. The chicken was tender and delicious with the vegetables cooked just right. This is one of the few meals I've eaten at a restaurant that did not upset my sensitive stomach.The server was attentive and excellent. For Dothan, they have very good Indian food. I was quite surprised at how authentic and delicious it was. Not the best nationally but quite impressive for the area. The staff are 5 star! Very friendly and helpful. I would go back when we are in the area. The building is very nicely decorated. Not sure if this was an anomaly or not, but that is something that I will remember next time. Interesting menu though.... A lot of authentic Indian and Greek food options as well as Mexican. Even though my rice was not as hot as I would've like, the sweet plantains were perfect. Save being cold, the steak tacos were delicious and they warmed up nicely in the microwave late night. I was in town visiting family over the weekend and we came to Taj to celebrate some bdays. I will be honest that I was a bit skeptical, but I am SO glad this is where we ended up. I am STILL thinking about how delicious my dinner was - I had the aloo matar (spelled alu mutter on their menu), spice level 7, with jalapeno naan. Others ordered tikka masala and butter chicken, ranging in spice levels from 2-7. We also had drinks, including two bottles of wine. Service was great, for the bday they surprised us with lava cake and a sombrero while singing happy birthday!! Overall, it was an amazing dinner and I'm not kidding when I tell you I'm still thinking about it!! Ps, my 7 spice was delicious - if you're not sure, I'd recommend starting at no higher than a 3 - the 3 tasted like about a jalapeno level spice. We had an early dinner tonight before we did a little shopping. My friend and I shared an order of Chicken Thai Curry and Feta Naan. It was plenty of food for both of us. They asked us how hot we wanted it on a scale of 1-10. Not having eaten there before, we went with a safe 5. Next time, we will go with a 7 or 8 because a 5 didn't give us much heat at all. Our waiter, T, was really nice. He forgot to charge my friend for his top shelf margarita, but instead of comping it, he rang it up separately for the regular margarita price. That was fine. My friend said it was a good margarita. The food came out quickly, but it was only around 5. There were very few people other than us in there at that time. When we went back by about an hour later, the parking lot had really filled up for ot to be a Wednesday evening. read more

I wanted to save my 800th review for a place I really enjoyed. This place is it! They have a bunch of different lunch specials. They are a mix of Indian and American type foods. The bullet naan is a perfect mix of heat and bread. On one visit it wasnt that spicy but on another it was HOT! I guess it just depends on the batch of peppers they use. They have a few other types of naan I'm curious about as well such as the feta and the other spicy one. The first time we went we both ordered our dishes at an 8 out 10 spicy. The waitress seemed in disbelief that we would want it that hot. When it came out it was flavorful but not too spicy. On my next visit I went all in on a level 10. Pretty intense but DELICIOUS. The service was ok. My next visit will be for the buffet . That takes place only on Sundays. I would highly recommend this location. read more

I have been here twice at this point and both times the food has been really good. The first time I was here, we arrived just after the end of the Sunday buffet (NOOOOOOOO!), but that was ok. I still wanted Indian food so we sat and ordered from the menu. We ordered papadum (delicious!) and bullet naan (delicious!) to share. I ordered the Chicken Tikka Masala spice level 8 for my entrée and was pleased. My only complaint is that it wasn't a spice level 8...it wasn't really all that spicy. On my second visit here, the buffet was had. And it was everything I needed it to be. The food on the buffet is not spiced so that it can be shared by all but you can ask for spices to add to your own plate to make it your heat level. The variety was good. Tandoori chicken, chicken tikka masala, vegetable biryani, onion rings, fried tilapia, paneer, and so on. It was great and I will be back. read more

Give this place a try when you're in Dothan! Before I review the food, I want to give 5/5 stars to our server tonight-tall Asian/Indian male with beautiful hair (I meant to ask for his name to make sure he gets recognition when I write my review but didn't get a chance). He was very attentive, friendly, & accommodating. He always exuded warmth in all our interactions. Now, food review. The large appetizer platter and baba ghanoush with naan bread were enough for 2 people. We hardly had room for the entrees. Samosas, Aloo Tikki, and Pakoras were excellent with Tamarind and/or Mint Chutneys! The chicken kebab was too dry. Baba Ghanoush: this is one of the best baba Ghanoushes we've tried. I love the creamy texture with the right blend of sour and salty (lemon), and the smoky flavor from grilling the eggplants. Naan bread: to me, naan is the middle ground between an authentic Mexican flour tortilla and pancakes. Their naan bread is soft, buttery and probably homemade. Curries: Tikka Masala & Butter chicken are their top sellers and you can't really go wrong with those 2. We decided to try Paneer Saagwala Curry & Fish Vindaloo Curry. They were not bad. The Saagwala Curry was rich & tasty. The fish vindaloo reminds me of a non-creamy tikka masala. It wasn't bad but I wish they had more fish options besides tilapia especially when it costs $17. The reason for the 4stars is because I think the pricing can be more reasonable for the curry dishes. They are a bit overpriced for what you get in my opinion. I think they should lower the price especially for chicken dishes or throw in more sides like naans and chutneys in addition to the basmati rice. The chicken kebab was also dry - easy fix with meat thermometer (for chicken 165 deg F) so they don't overcook next time. I would recommend trying them during lunch hours. They offer lunch specials on their curries on M-F until 3pm [more options available - see lunch menu photo]. Overall, I was thrilled to find this Indian/Greek restaurant in Dothan, AL and I would come back again. read more

Taj has recently remodeled and it looks fantastic inside. Our server was friendly, knowledgeable, and checked on us often. The food and drinks that I had was full of flavor. The garlic/spinach naan was crispy on the outside and fluffy inside. The lamb meat and the potatoes in the vindaloo curry were very tender. The mango lasse was creamy and was a really nice sweet balance to the spicy vindaloo. Best Indian food in our town by far! read more
