Even though Spring Branch is not known for its Indian population or cuisine, we decided to give the Taj Mahal a try. After visiting the actual wonder of the world up close, when this famous name is mentioned, our expectations go way up. The food is good, fairly authentic in preparation, but does not actually leave me stunned like seeing the ivory white marble mausoleum sparkling in the sunrise for the first time. My go to Indian dish is the butter chicken and wifey loves ordering the Tandoori chicken, which we both did. Add a side of garlic Nan & basmati rice as a complement to the main course. Overall, we were pleased with the taste, although I should have gone up one spice level to perhaps get that combination of burn and flavor that I crave. The 65 chicken as an appetizer was ok, but we tend to like this dish deep fried & crispy, instead of baked. The restaurant is in a shopping center and shares space with the Thai Orchard business, as the same owner runs both restaurants. The inside dining is comfortable enough. The staff kept our drinks filled, which is always a plus to me. I've always loved their food. You ask for spicy and they deliver. Ask for no spice: they oblige. It's great that you're able to order there Indian or Thai food since you're able to walk between both sides for a nice flair. Thai Orchid is next door. Now their Mushroom Korma, to me, was not good. Decided to check this restaurant out since we wanted Indian Food after church. The option was either India Oven or this since we've passed it a few times when we've been driving thru Hwy 46. We read mostly good reviews so we gave it a shot. We arrived shortly before noon & waited til then. An East Indian family arrived first so we went in after. There were a few booths on each side of the walls & tables thru the middle. There was also an adjoining wall to pass thru to the Thai restaurant which is owned & operated by the owners. We found out that's been open for 13 years & customers were asking them when they'd open an Indian restaurant so they decided to open one which has been operating for the last 2 years. We sat down & were given menus & asked what we wanted to drink so we ordered Chai Tea & iced water. Our waiter was a very polite & pleasant male whom I'm assuming a family run business? We received a pot of the Chai tea which was uncharacteristically very sweet but rich(waitress said it was pre-made). It was a big pot for 2 people & was different because you could serve yourself vs. refills coming from the kitchen. We decided to order Butter Chicken, Garlic Naan & Lamb Biryani. The Naan bread was brought out first without the entrees but we were hungry so we started eating it. It was nice & buttery with garlic powder & some minced garlic but not too heavy. We were excited to try the Butter Chicken as it's a good gauge for an Indian restaurant, IMO. Well, the sauce was uncharacteristically sweet??and disappointingly flat in depth, not complex & it contained long, sliced chicken breast pieces vs chunks. It needed salt at least as the Jasmine rice(not Basmati) served on the side wasn't going to redeem it. The Garlic Naan at least added flavor when you topped off the Naan & ate it like a wrap. We've never ever had sweet Butter Chicken. The Lamb Biryani was ordered as mild but it had some spice & a lemony note. At least it had more flavor. The yogurt sauce given on the side had an onion-herb fenugreek flavor which I thought was given to cool down your palate but had some spice to it again. When we paid our bill & the waitress asked if we wanted more tea? We said it was too sweet & only if she had something less sweet. She said it was pre-made so we declined. We told her we've had Chai Tea before but we usually have to sweeten it ourselves with the packets of sugar on the table. We paid our bill, packed up our leftover Biryani & chalked it up to another Indian food restaurant experience & celebrating AAPI Month. Maybe we'll try the Thai place next door next time. To note, we've had great Indian food all over the Bay Area, Arizona, Austin & they've all been amazing. read more

The food was average in taste but not bad by any means. You can get better by going into San Antonio but if you prefer to stay local then this is a good trade off and decent food. Service was also on the average. The male server was reserved and quiet and seemed like he would rather not be there. To that I say find a different job where you don't have to interact with people. The female was very engaging and all smiles. The seating and tables are bit dated and sterile but it is an Indian restaurant in a strip mall so I guess that is what I should have expected. Finally, the beer. How are you going to have an Indian restaurant but not server Indian beer? Why do you go next door and get Thai beer from the Thai restaurant? Something is not right like they share ownership AND share one liquor license but that is pure speculation. read more

Taj Mahal is DEE-LISH-US. I've been here many times and always leave happy. I try to mix it up, but the Navratan Korma and Saag Paneer are top-tier faves. I never skip the samosas, and when I'm with friends, I double up--two apps, always. Garlic naan? The shit. I've tried 4 of the 5 spice levels they offer--trust me, they don't play. Extra Spicy? I do not dare. Medium is my sweet spot when dining in, but for takeout? Start with American Mild unless you're looking for a trial by fire. Service is always great--friendly, attentive, and easygoing. Atmosphere is quietly charming. It's in a strip mall, sure, but it's warm, welcoming, and subtly elegant inside. We also had spring rolls , which were piping hot, crispy and larger than spring rolls often are. The saag paneer at spice level 3 had great flavor and heat. The food here was very good and when we asked for the heat level to be spicy and extra spicy it really was (so many Indian restaurants tone down the level even when we request super spicy). We started with an appetizer of Gobi 65. It was tasty. We both loved our main dishes: Chicken Vindaloo and Chicken Kadai. Full of flavor and spice-lots of meat. Very fresh tasting. I ordered the lamb tandoori ($24) with medium heat. Tandoori takes a long time to cook, but this came right out, clearly cooked ahead, which is ok if properly done. This was not. the meat was so dry, the only way to get it down was by drinking two 16 oz tumblers of water - and I still left half on my plate. Quite possibly the worst meal I've ever eaten in a restaurant. it was also bland, when I had asked for medium spice. My husband ordered a curry with mild spice. They gave him the medium spice, but he ate it and said the curry was ok. Since the waiter never returned during our meaL, I had to walk to the counter twic to request a refill on the water and for a knife to saw through the hunks of tandoori lamb (tandoori is a braisin/steaming method which should result in very tender meats and not require a knife). My family and I have been to Taj Mahal several times. Their food is absolutely fantastic! When we visit we tend to eat 'family style' to thoroughly enjoy a wide range of their menu. Everything we sampled had wonderful flavor and held true to it's roots. To make things even more pleasant, the service was top notch. No glass ever went dry and their recommdations were superb. If you have the opportunity, I highly recommend visiting Taj Mahal. It is a Spring Branch gem. read more

I took my wife on her birthday along with our three adult children to one of the few restaurants in the neighborhood that is open on Monday. I should have had more experience in obtaining a suitable venue for the celebration. Taj Mahal is a wretched place. I am inclined to think the kitchen staff should be forced to consume the miserable efforts of their offerings to customers.
