Ate here on a Wednesday. About an hour before close. Food was excellent! I had Chilli chicken, garlic naan, and a Taj Mahal beer. I really like that they let you pick the spice level using a scale from 1-8 (which I'm sure is useful in the Midwest). I chose 4 since I was new to the place and I know Indian food can be very spicy. The 4 was flavorful level of spicy, just enough kick to feel it, not as spicy as habanero salsa. So exactly what I wanted. Ambience was nothing special. Eh, it's fine. For terre haute, you can't be mad about it. The portions of the curries are fairly small compared to what I've seen, and it's definitely not the best Indian food I've had. Came here with a friend a few weeks ago. We got chicken pakora as an appetizer, and we both got chicken Tikka masala with garlic naan. The food as a whole was very good. There was sauce that came with the chicken pakora was really helped add more flavor. I thought it was unique that they had Pepsi products (which I prefer), normally these types of restaurants carry Coke products. Pretty good, better than last time. Not expensive. I had their mushroom saag, and my dinner partner had malai kofta. We had an appetizer of garlic naan. Both were very good, we decided. The portion sizes were a bit smaller than our local favorite Indian Restaurant in Bloomington, and the garlic naan bread was smaller, too. Nonetheless, flavors were good and correctly spiced. The food comes slowly, but only one waitress and their Saturday night venue was PACKED. The grocery items, we decided, were, pretty good in selection, perhaps higher priced than a larger city but probably handy to have. The price for the dinner was good, however. We stopped here on our way home. The reviews were great and are spot on. The restaurant is dated, but is spotless. The tiny grocery holds most of the necessities for desi cooking. The restaurant was quiet: only three tables. We had butter chicken, garlic Nan, lamb curry and spinach pakora. Everything was super delicious. The butter chicken sauce was the best I have ever had. The food is always delicious and piping hot. I've yet to be dissatisfied dining here, I've been here 4-5 times that I can remember. The staff os kind and they have a neat little Middle Eastern market onside for foods, drinks, and some trinkets. You also get a glass of water upon sitting down. To be honest, I wasn't expecting much from any restaurant in Terre Haute. But I should have because Taj Mahal has fantastic food! I'm not an expert in Indian food, but if I could describe what I want/like - this would be it. Everything is super flavorful. I need white-girl spice level, which they happily accommodated. Be prepared for some unfortunate typos in the menu, but don't let them distract you. I'd much rather dine at an establishment that can cook than spell. It's Excellent - if you are craving Indian food then come here. It's not Terre Haute excellent -it's anywhere in the USA excellent. So if your in town from Chicago or Indy or Champaign or anywhere - this is your place to eat excellent Punjabi Indian food. Food (A+) Had the butter chicken and garlic naan - it was excellent. Felt like I was in Punjab India - this is as authentic as your going to find in the USA. I got a 3 spice and it was like a mild plus. The naan was flavorful and garlicky - in a good way. While the butter chicken had the right amount texture so it was not runny nor was it too thick and creamy. They nailed it. Service (A-) It's an ethnic place run by first generations so your going to get really good food made fast without maybe the other pleasantries you are used to. But the owner is super nice and the staff is trying their best. The food is good and it comes out fast. Value (A-) So for one person it is around $25 out the door to get full. Restaurant and bathrooms very clean. Service was very prompt and cordial. Food was good. Saag Paneer (Level 5 spicy, but not too much) was around $13. The bread with minced lamb was 5.99 was good but I would not pay the extra over regular bread. I will let you decide the value on both. There were supposed to be daily lunch specials. Specials were mentioned on the menu but did not seem value oriented. I don't normally spend this much on lunch but was a nice meal. read more

Taj Mahal was SO yummy. This place is in a great location in Terre Haute. It's family owned, so you have to be ready for slower service but it is well worth it! And, all who worked there were so lovely. The menu is expansive. We ordered the Chicken Vindaloo and Butter Chicken. They have a heat scale of 1-6. We ordered 4 and 5 respectively. The heat was lesser in the butter chicken (probably due to the creaminess of the gravy) but there was still a good kick. And the flavors were amazing. The garlic Naan was very flavorful and perfectly cooked. We also ordered the veggie sampler as an app and ate every bite. Come on, guys... what happened to the lunch special buffet? I don't know what I want at Indian restaurants. I like getting a little dot of each color of food from the buffet, tasting each one to figure out what is good, and then going back for a plate of that color of food with some rice and naan. Small restaurant and grocery store in the town. The owner was very pleasant and welcoming. The ambience is like a typical old building. The order was fast. We tried saag paneer, malai kofta, plain naan, chili-cilantro naan. The malai kofta was cooked to perfection, very flavorful, aromatic and creamy texture. Kofta tested soft and flavorful. This is a solid 4 stars in my opinion. I was glad to find authentic Indian food in TH. Drinks: I ordered Chai tea, which was actually the worst part of my meal. Very little spice or flavor and super watered down. I wouldn't get it again. Boyfriend had 2 Indian beers that were basic lagers but served cold and priced right. Apps: veggie samosas were good, larger than I expected. The sauces we were given were tasty, both a green one and a red chutney. Food: I ordered chicken tikka masala at a level 4 spice. It was a little too hot for me and I like hot. It was good and I ate most of it, but I usually like my tikka masala a bit more tame so I'll go down to a 3 next time. I ordered a samosa chat, it's missing the brown tamerind sauce. But it some great flavors. The tandoori chicken is more like burned baked chicken we couldn't get past the first bite. There was no real tandoori Malala taste as all. The chicken biryani was super dry chicken and lacked the flavors I looked for in a basic biryani. I was so surprised to find such a great Indian restaurant in such a small town! The food is always delicious and the owners and staff are very friendly and attentive. The lamb dishes are excellent as is the chicken curry. Their rice is so light and fragrant, never underdone or sticky. I got the tandoori chicken to go. I am used to tandoori chicken being charred, smoky, tender, and juicy. The chicken here was OK at best. It wasn't charred, smoky, or juicy but I can say it was tender enough to eat without tiring out my jaw. I did appreciate the extra flavoring that the pickled vegetables added but that's really all I can say about the dish. Came here for dinner at 8:00 on a Saturday and there were plenty of seats available. Service was attentive and the music was relaxing. Their menu is very large and most entrees are $9-11. I was not very hungry and ordered the chicken biryani. The portions were huge and could have definitely served me for two or three meals. I enjoyed the different spices in the rice. Only complaint is that I wish it had more variety so it wasn't just chicken and rice. My friends ordered the paneer and a vegetable dish. I had food delivered. The process was quick and easy, once I figured out the website. Their main site has a checkout that doesn't work. I called the place, and they told me all delivery has to be done through the website Delivery2go. Very odd. (Also, "free delivery over $15 mysteriously turned into a $3.00 charge. Perhaps they should take down their main page/checkout, since it doesn't work.) As for the food: Garlic Naan- Fantastic. Simply delicious. Butter chicken: shreds of ripped up dry chicken breast. NOT seasoned in any way, and it was definitely NOT cooked in the sauce, it was added afterward. The sauce was delicious. Wish the chicken would have matched. Pickles- I love, Love, LOVE the mixed vegetable pickles I get at my local Indian place. These are definitely not that. Huge chunks of...squash(??) something, very bitter and like licking a salt block. I ordered from here because of the good reviews. We love this Indian cuisine! We drive 70 miles to enjoy it, well worth the drive! They have a large assortment of Indian food ,Chinese, etc. Always a very clean restaurant, Nice quiet atmosphere.
