Great food, friendly service. We've brought out-of-town guests several times, and our latest said it was the best Indian they'd ever had. I'm especially impressed with the tandoori chicken. The point of this dish is really moist, flavorful chicken, and so many places serve it dry. Not here! This tandoori is always moist and delicious. We've enjoyed chicken tikki masala, chicken korma, lamb vindaloo. This time we tried the lamb biryani, and it was excellent. The buffet is good for a tasting spree, but we've had best results ordering from the menu. I normally don't do Indian restaurants; most Indian restaurants targeting an American audience are not that much better than store-bought Indian food, and are much more expensive. However, we wandered into the Taj as the second of two restaurants that appeared to be open in Downtown Bend on Christmas, and were pleasantly surprised. My wife (vegetarian) and I (not vegetarian) were impressed by the buffet. It was really good food for a reasonable price. Everything was just solid, well-done Indian food. For buffets, a lot of places (Indian or otherwise) cut corners and don't take pride in their food. But Taj was on-point for everything. The chutney, normally an ignored side-dish, was really tasty. The lamb curry was great. The vegetarian dishes all were really good. And the beer was reasonably priced (got a Deschutes Porter for $4.50). We have never had Indian food before . We totally enjoyed it . Our waiters were a son and cousin of the owners . Very knowledgeable, personable , and aimed us in the right direction with the menu being newbies . We will definitely be back , and hopefully next time for the buffet to get a taste for a little of a lot of choices . We had the chicken biryani rice and shrimp masala . Both were very good . We drove from Seattle heading towards San Francisco this was our stop halfway and found this hidden gem. This is a very nice family owned business and the owner and his Son were very nice and humble. Very mediocre. I ordered Chicken Vindaloo and rice was an extra charge. What I got was more like Chicken Tikka Masala with a potato thrown in. Chunks of chicken in a bright orange-red tomato cream sauce. Chicken was rubbery. Idk what cream is doing in what should be a vinegar or wine--based dish. I honestly really don't like leaving bad reviews, so I apologize for sounding like an ass hat. I just have to call it like it is though. This is not Indian food. I feel like they have to cook with no flavor, because they are in Central Oregon... but it's so far from authentic Indian it's just plain strange tasting. I honestly just feel bad that people from Bend haven't actually experienced real Indian food if this is what they know and are used to. I know the lack of diversity in this town might make it feel like you have to be careful with spices, but there should be an effort to try and expose people to real authentic ethnic cuisine, so they can actually experience the food and the culture, not this watered-down, creamy, no-flavored muck. I mean tikka masala at a normal Indian food place IS mild, but still has loads of flavor. This was like eating Elmer's glue with some red food dye. The next time I ordered I tried to order vindaloo in the hopes that it was close to what tikka masala should be. Nope. Just more red food dye, same bland flavor. I have no clue why this place has so many 5 stars. I'm from San Francisco Bay Area and the flavors pop at my local Indian restaurants. The food here was flavorless, way too creamy, and they used white rice instead of Basmati. I took a few bites of my butter chicken and was so unhappy that I lost my appetite. The Saag Paneer was watery and flavorless as well. Zero spice in these dishes. I'll eat it because I just spend $60, but I'll be adding hot sauce to everything. read more

First time getting Indian food from any restaurant. I usually get my Indian fix from the store bought sauces that come in a jar. Glad I decided to splurge a little! I can't remember the last time I had a buffet, but it was definitely before March 2020. Taj palace was pretty much exactly what I expected: an Indian buffet with all the classic hits. And a little bit spicier than other Indian buffets I've had in the past. The three stars is just for the buffet, I have a feeling if you order off the menu it's slightly higher quality. This restaurant offers great variety of Indian a la carte and buffet options. The food is truly amazing. This is definitely a place to visit, if you are looking for authentic Indian food. We ordered Malai Kofta, Mutter Paneer and Vegetable Biryani. While browsing through many options while returning from a long day hike/6 hours of drive, we were disappointed to know of many restaurants in the Old Mill/Downtown area getting closed and not even offering food for take-out in spite of calling them well 1/2 hour before their closure. Losing our hope for good dinner, we browsed for more options but were lucky to find Taj Palace which surprisingly had not many reviews and did not come up on top. We called the restaurant approximately around 8:25ish and the restaurant owner without any reluctance answered the call and offered to dive in. Love the new location! Plenty of parking. Went there on Christmas day and the owners were so friendly and welcoming. Food was fabulous, plentiful and prices were great. Just the right amount of spice, tender chicken, wonderful soup and condiments/sauces. Enjoyed a nice glass of cabernet and if you want a mixed drink, the Wall St bar is attached for your convenience. Was too full to try dessert and with the massive amount of leftovers i brought home, i had dinner for two more nights. Can't wait to go back and try something else. Will be bringing our book club here. There were 4 of us at our table, everyone had something different, everyone loved their meals and we all decided we'd be back real soon. Asked him to get me some authentic sambhar, he brought the same shit back with some added chilly powder which made it more shitty Veg kurma - got one plate so bland that it didnt have any taste. asked him to make the second plate spicy, he added pepper. Now who in this world will put pepper in a north indian curry paneer makhani - very bland and no taste. Has anyone seen a pink colored curry? Curry was served with tandoori roti and rice which was the only good stuff. The thing is they don't know the difference between spicy and hot. If you ask them spicy, they'll just put pepper or chilly powder. They don't know anything about cooking. Although they say they are an indian cuisine restaurant, they dont know the real taste of anything indjan and just are occupying real estate at a nice location and making people waste money on shit thats not edible. Best Indian restaurant in Bend. Period. Some of the best I've ever had, and I've tried many many Indian restaurants. It's my favorite food and I'm very picky about it. I don't by any means consider myself an expert but I've eaten Indian food more times than any other type of food. Having said that: 1) Chicken Tikka Masala: phenomenal, great flavor, smooth, just delicious. I get it really spicy but BE CAREFUL, it is HOT here. A very good sign. 2) Saag Paneer: warm, buttery, creamy absolutely mouthwatering. 10/10 3) Garlic Naan, not the best ever ever ever but very good none the less. 4) Mango Lassi, perfectly creamy, strong mango flavor, not too sweet. Excellent. Overall this is in my top 3 favorite Indian restaurants, period. Haven't had Indian food this good in years. What a refreshing find! On top of that it's run by a very sweet man and his wife. They do all the cooking and serving themselves. They work FAST and are total sweethearts. 16 years in business for a reason. PSA to those with allergies (ESPECIALLY to tree nuts): don't take the employee's word. I called beforehand and asked if the Chillin Tikki Masala and Chicken Makhani had ANY tree nuts or tree nut oil (because I know some curries are cooked with cashew oil), and the worker assured me neither did. I get home, taste the Makhani, and instantly feel the familiar tingling sensation. 2 hours and 2 Benadryls later, and I'm getting hives. Called back and let them know what was happening, and the same worker got very defensive and insisted no nuts were used. I eat at the Taj Palace about once a month, but despite the fact I'll likely continue to frequent it, I'm not sure the pros outweigh the cons. Pros: The price for the lunch buffet is reasonable. There's a large selection, and the naan is fluffy and flavorful. There's a great balance of meat and vegetarian dishes. I'm also a sucker for the "mango ice cream," a mango custard with apple bits. Cons: There's better Indian food, just not in Bend. Food quality is hit or miss. Sometimes the rice is burnt. Sometimes the food is warm-ish rather than hot. Sometimes the naan is dry and brittle like crackers. Just as troubling, the service sucks. After more than a dozen visits, I remember one hello. You'll get a water; you might get a refill. No one will ask how things are going. You may even pay in near silence. I actually have a secret golf-style game going. Fewest words spoken wins. Current record: three. read more
