This place is good for a lunch buffet and offers many tasty options. I've been a few times and this last time was just as good, with the exception of food not tasting as hot or spicy, which can be a pro or con depending on how hot you like your food. The place is clean and staff is polite, not overly friendly though. The place is small so go early for lunch as they fill up quickly. It's suitable for kids too. This place has FANTASTIC food. Every dish I had was the best version of itself. That's the only way I can think to describe it; the flavors, spices, and heat were all perfectly balanced. I have my favorite Indian spots in my hometown, and we cook a fair amount of Indian food at home too. But this was the best Indian food I've had all year. We started with vegetable samosa, and then split the veggie dinner - dal soup, paneer makhani, saag aloo, chana masala, raita, garlic naan. There was plenty of food (but no leftovers). This is one of the worst Indian restaurants around. The dishes have overpowering ingredients and they taste terrible. Tried lunch buffet three times. I love this place, its clean and friendly and I assume family owned as I always see the same lady and again (I assume) her husband when I visit. Great food, consistent quality and generous portion sizes. (we always take some home) The lunch buffet is a great deal if you pay cash, same with take-out you get a good cash discount which is appreciated. We visit the Taj Palace for lunch at least once a week if not twice. The buffet is loaded with fantastic chicken dishes every time and always has a good selection of vegetarian options. I get masala Chai tea at every visit and the owners PJ and Frahana visit our table to chat each time we come in. A great value for lunch at $17 cash for two lunch buffets. You get to try a variety of dishes at the buffet, as well as all-you-can-eat naan bread, rice, and hot masala tea. The staff is friendly, and there is a cash discount for the buffet. Although service was prompt and polite, it lacked a personality. By no means did this hurt the food experience though - my Lamb Vindaloo was hot and delicious (and I do mean hot - if you enjoy spicy food, any of the Vindaloo dishes will stoke your fire). The lamb in this entree was tender and flavorful, and my girlfriend's Chicken Vindaloo was just as satisfying. I just came home from Taj Palace for the first time and created a yelp account simply because I absolutely had to review it. Especially in a corporate suburban mecca like the Chesterfield Valley - Taj Palace is worthy of all the praise I can give it. I've had some of the best Indian in nearly every major US city - and some Canadian ones (i.e. Vij's in Vancouver) - and now I can say one of my favorites is 5 minutes from my house!! Walking in, I was absolutely skeptical - afterall, the closest thing to quality ethnic food in the area is little hole-in-the-wall Chinese joint in the strip mall. The atmosphere, however, is surprisingly nice. I went for dinner, so I can't speak on behalf of the lunch buffet (though I can't wait to try it!). I ordered one of my vegetarian standbys - the saag paneer (spinach and paneer cheese), and some nan. I was a bit thrown off by the price - somewhere around $12.95, but it was absolutely worth it. Full of flavor, hot but not overly so, excellent basmati rice with cardamom pods and cloves, and even fantastic nan! I can't speak for the meals of my carnivorous friends, but my crew seemed to love the chicken tikha and chicken tandoori as well, not to mention a slew of curry dinners. Do not hesitate to give this new restaurant a try! This is the kind of quality independent eatery that deserves to be patronized. I worry for them because their location has proven terrible for several restaurants before them - and it was dead when I went in - but hopefully the quality of their food will counteract any disadvantage they have there. This place is really quite a surprise for the area which is jam packed with chain restaurants. I have been there twice now (once for their lunch buffet and once for dinner) and have not been disappointed. The flavors are right on, nan is perfect and drink selections are great. Came here tonight for a going away dinner for dear Mallory. Food was delish! Service was impeccable. The entrance is a bit weird. You have to use the side entrance. It's kind of smallish. I got an egg dish with boiled eggs, tomatoes, onions & bell peppers. Kind of sweet sauce, & not spicy. The tandoori chicken wings appetizer reminded me of the roasted chicken I had in Thailand. Not tooo spicy. The staff accommodated to my dietary restrictions (no butter, no dairy). My stomach behaved well & did not make the slightest burp. I tend to be more of a weekend foodie . I try to go to a lot of different types of cuisine. But one of my favorite places is Taj. I have never had a bad buffet experience and the food is full of flavor. I have eaten at Taj on the weekend and for lunch during the week. I have found that the buffet menu varies from day to day but that not so much from week to week, but the food they put out is of good quality and is always hot when it is suppose to be a hot dish. Taj has become one of my stand by restaurants when I am not in the mood to try something new or when I can not decide where to eat. You should give them a try. read more

I went here for the first time last week and I must say the food here is very good. We had the Prawn Korma and anther dish I can't remember. The Korma has such a delightful taste. It is quite rich and when you are done eating the shrimp, get some nan and sop up the rest of the sauce. So good. The service was very good and the place is clean. We will be coming back. I hovered between 3 and 4 stars for Taj Palace. I will say I am willing to give it a second chance. We went for dinner on Saturday night and while the food was great, the service was terrible. The person that sat us did not utter a single word to us, or ask us to follow him to the table. Maybe 10 minutes later another person came by to take our order. This was his intro "Do you know what you want to eat?" He didn't tell us his name, no pleasantries, just to the point. He was clearly distracted as we had to tell him what we wanted twice. Once he dropped our food off we never saw him again. We ordered 2 dishes and we were brought out on small serving of rice, it took 10 minutes to get additional rice. The chicken curry was great, very flavorful, well spiced. The butter chicken was good as well. The naan was very fresh but a little overcooked. It was kind of a bummer that they do not offer the buffet in the evening. I think it would have solved a lot of our issues. Overall, the food was good and I am willing to give them another try. I have eaten at the Taj Palace many times and have never been disappointed. Their lunch buffet is fantastic (I typically eat enough mattar paneer and tandoori chicken to be sick) and their menu selections are great too (I recommend the chicken tikka masala). The basmati rice is perfectly seasoned without overpowering dishes and is delicious enough to eat on its own. I've had Indian cuisine in London, Toronto, Rotterdam, and Sydney and I can honestly say very few shine a light on the taj palace. My mouth is watering as I wrote this! read more

Last night I was feeling a little sub-continental, so the wife and I decided to hit up the palace - Taj Palace that is. See what I did there? We had been there before for the lunch buffet, and enjoyed that quite a bit. Their buffet had the (typical) wide variety, most all of which we thought was well prepared and flavorful. And it always helps when the dishes are labeled with an "American" description, plus relative heat levels. For those of us that aren't big fans of heat for the sake of it, that's pretty important. But...this review will focus on our dinner trip. It was only about 5:45 pm on a Friday, so the place was mostly empty when we arrived. A little worryingly, it wasn't much more full when we left. For the quality meal that we experienced, I hope that was an anomaly. I'd hate to see Taj Palace fail to make it. Service throughout the evening was excellent. We had a young waiter who was friendly, checked often on us, offered good suggestions and opinions, and basically made the evening enjoyable. He, along with the busboy, was also very polite. Small touches, like asking permission to take each plate, add up. Atmosphere is simple, yet a casual type of refined. I know that sounds odd, but it fits. This is a smaller, intimate type of place, without a lot of kitsch in it. Oh, and before I forget, you should always have a coupon. They have put the same coupon in the local mailers, I think since they first opened. It has a couple dollars off the lunch buffet, and $5 off $25+ or $10 off $50 plus for dinner. Up to 20% off is a pretty good deal, in my book. But even without a coupon, I'd still highly recommend Taj Palace. So on to the part most of you will care about more - the food. Since this wasn't a buffet, and the entrees & vegetable plates tend to $12 - $18, it wasn't a night to be adventurous. So we ordered chicken tiki masala, goat curry (I likes me the goat, and can't really get it at any other cuisine), saag paneer, and of course nan bread. We opted for the bread basket, which included nan, garlic nan, and onion kulcha. I don't really know how well I could describe the items individually, so let me just say that that the flavors were all very good, just what I wanted and expected. Meats were firm, yet tender, sauces were savory in their flavorfulness, and cheese cubes had just the right amount of spring. Rice was excellent, better than most I have experienced. I prefer jasmine rice anyway over other varieties, and theirs just seemed fresh & nicely aromatic. We were offered four different heat levels for each dish: mild, medium, hot, and Indian hot. We opted for medium on the meat dishes, and mild on the saag paneer. However, the masala and curry both seemed about as mild as the paneer. A bit of a disappointment, since I wanted a little spice for interest but not for pain. The nan basket was a LOT of bread, for only $5.95. The regular nan and garlic nan were both pretty good, slightly crispy out, soft inside - and the garlic was on the lighter side so as to not be overpowering. The onion kulcha was a bit of a disappointment for me. It is "stuffed with mild herbs and onions," an accurate description from the menu - so I can't fault that. That's just not my preference. But I can fault it for being overly limp. Perhaps that is because of the moisture in the fresh herbs, but still... Anyway, a nice touch at the end was that each of us were offerred complimentary desserts. Apparently this is the norm (at least for this waiter and/or night), since the next table was offerred the same. My wife picked gulab jamun (those sweeeet bread balls), and I got some type of mango pudding. Both were small portions - what do you expect for free - but hit the spot with a cool palate cleanser. Oh! almost forgot - They also started us with some cracker type bread & a couple sauce bowls. One bowl was cuminy/cilantro-y with spiciness, and the other was some type of sweet sauce. And when we finished our bread, they asked if we wanted more, and brought it quickly. read more

They actually had some really good chicken curry! I'm a huge fan of chicken curry and have been since I had it in Japan. This did not disappoint and coupling it with the garlic naan was pure delight. I will definitely be back due to the price being very reasonable. My friend's recommended we meet up there and that it is their favorite Indian food in all of St. Louis.
