I brought in a much loved leather purse that was pretty beat up on the bottom . The purse is unusual not only that it's an uneven denim blue color leather but has depth to it with puffed stitching. The cobbler was not to keen on trying to clean up and find a dye to freshen it up. So a lovely woman named Tenneil (spelling?) took it upon herself to start mixing colors and created a custom blue cream dye that turned out to be perfect! She gave me the dye, the applicator and showed me how to do it ... and all of this for free. She was amazing and understood how much I love this purse!!! Check it out... My sandal heel needed to be re-glued so I brought it in to Takkens on Marsh Street in SLO. We've taken our shoes for repairs and cleaning for decades, but the service and repair work have gone downhill. The woman handed me a ticket after I paid $10 to repair one sandal and clean the pair and said it would take a few days. I waited about a week before returning and was asked if they had called me. The sandals hadn't been touched. So I waited a few more days and returned again. The man behind the counter made me wait at the counter unnecessarily while he answered the phone and carried on a conversation, then organized the area directly behind the counter, and greeted customers coming into the shop until finally asking me for the ticket which I handed to him without delay. He gave me the pair and I walked out to my car. I looked at the heel of the sandal and noticed that it hadn't been re-glued. So I walked back into the shop and showed him the heel. He took it back and I waited for a call. No call so I came back into the shop and the leather on the heel was not aligned well. It was a sloppy job. When I pointed it out to the same man behind the counter, his answer was "well, we're not professionals. If you wanted it done professionally, you could've taken it to the Paso Robles location". His attitude dumbfounded me! Why would I expect a shoe repair shop to be capable of fixing shoes properly? As I stated,Takkens has changed and not for the best. Find another shop even if it's in another town. The staff here seem to be just sales people. Such a shame. read more

I'm sadly disappointed with the service we had at Takken's. I purchased Birkenstocks in the wrong size and they said they would exchange it for the different size and order it for me. I waited 2.5 weeks and had to ask if they were in, which they were. I then drive to SLO to find out that it was the same size... So then they have to order the new size AGAIN and 2 weeks go by with me calling weekly to get an update when they keep replying that its backordered so they'll give me a call the next day, never do. Finally I call to just get a refund since its been 2 weeks with nothing, I then order it straight on Birkenstocks (it was in stock) and now its coming in 2 days.. I feel like im more disappointed in myself for letting them run me in circles. I could've had these shoes a month ago. read more

Terrible service to get a spit shine. The manager did it and was completely disrespectful, it's like she didn't want to even help out or do her job, she had said she buffed the shit out of the toe on the boots, along with yelling very loudly in front of other customers. She also started cussing and said the F words as we were leaving, how unprofessional can a manager be! It's sad for the elderly lady that has to work alongside that. She said I cannot get my specific shine from anywhere around here but really it's her that is unable to do so. Will not be back ever thanks to her! I called from work since I really needed good footwear fast. I sprained my arch, have one repaired Rt. ACL & the Lt. ACL not, in addition to having had my Spine Fused a few years ago. So being that my body is a "hot mess", while I still have to walk miles everyday on hard pavement, at work, I needed one of the best. Anyway, the young fellow that I talked on the phone not only confirmed that they had exactly what I wanted, but would give me a discount, since I worked for the Government. I did not even think of asking, so that was icing on the cake. It was super-kind for him to suggest that. I have been here a few times, mostly to get one of the top-of-the-line New Balance Sneakers. They always carry, at least a few versions, of the famously excellent New Balance 990 series. I have been wearing TOTL ( Top of the line ) New Balance for decades now. If you check out NB's website, you can see many of their offerings, Including some nice 100% leather sneakers that run up to $399. You can also order a custom version sneaker, where you get to choose an assortment of all kinds of color combo on-line. This shop would be able to get me almost any of these more exotic models and still through in the discount. The salesman was super-cool & empathetic toward my story about how frustrated I was getting a good replacement innersole for another 998 I had at home. I had already bought & wasted at least $100 on 2 different kinds, to no avail. He simply suggested for me to bring them in another time & we could work on a solution. If it did not work, then I would get a full refund. As opposed to many other places, they did not try to up sell me anything, nor do anything, except give me great fast service. Can you go elsewhere for cheaper crappier sneakers & service... sure...but you do not want to go cheap on neither footwear nor eyewear for that matter. Anyway, after putting on my New NB's I walked out of there with literally a new bounce in my step. The staff at this Takkens is super-cool! It's too bad they are the only cobbler in town. They've never been able to properly fix my shoes. I brought sandals in to resole and glue the strap into the sole. The first time I wore them after picking them up the heel fell off and the strap came unglued. I had to throw away the shoes and buy flip flops so I could continue my day. I reluctantly went back, months later, to fix a pair of boots and another sandal that needed gluing. They didn't glue the sandal correctly and there is now glue all over the black suede. Not only is the shoe not fixed but it's ruined! The job they did on the boot was embarrassing! They added a tap to the front of the toe, it was crooked and the heel they replaced on the boot wasn't even fixed properly. They did an extremely poor job. I do not recommend them but it really sucks we don't have any shoe repair in town that can fix a basic heel. read more

My mother and I went shopping for shoes for a wedding, we were there shortly after the store opened for the day and were the only customers. The store manger asked what we were looking for, then rudely told us we wouldn't find anything as it was the end of the season and that we wouldn't find anything anywhere else either. We did find a pair of shoes, and while checking out we asked if the owner had changed. We were told ownership changed 7 years ago, we explained we hadn't been there in a long time and the store looked a little different. The store manager asked, in a rude tone, where we were from. I explained we are both from SLO. Whether or not someone is from SLO and likely to be a return customer, it's not ok to be rude to them, especially since we were polite and his tag said he was the manager. I can't remember everything he said, but his attitude was essentially that it was beneath him to assist us. In future I will stick with Charles' Shoes, where they have always been helpful to me, or Mike's...both Charles' and Mike's have a better selection and better service. read more

I wish I could give negative stars. I took two pairs of discontinued Birkenstocks to be resoled. It took 6 weeks, instead of the promised 4 weeks. The extended length of time did not bother me - I rather them be done with care, then haphazardly. Well, when they finally arrived the cobbler had placed the wrong size on them. They then tried to charge me an additional fee to have them redone, even though the paperwork clearly stated the correct and confirmed size. They took the shoes back and proceeded to keep them for an additional 3-months (without explanation.) When they finally arrived it was the worst job I had ever seen. Shoe glue was dried across the material; the soles were uneven; the leather on the inside of the soles were badly damaged and scratched. There condition was so terrible that the sales associate apologized and said she was embarrassed to give them to me - but here they were. The staff informed me that if they were to take them back the quality would most likely be worse because the cobbler is over-worked. To add insult to injury they still wanted me to pay full the full price for resoling shoes that took 4.5 months and were worse off then when I had initially brought them in. While traveling, my sandal broke apart leaving me to wear the only other shoes I brought... neon yellow and blue Nike sneakers. Thankfully I happened upon Takkens. Chris glued my sandal and because of his help, within 15 minutes I was able to find the most comfortable sandals ever that actually fit me! I can't remember the name of the gentleman we worked with, but he is in charge of the website and is headquarted in San Luis Obispo. I used to live in the Central Coast, and recently moved to Pennsylvania for college. After graduating, I stayed in the area. My boyfriend was looking for a pair of UGG slippers for his mom for her birthday, and local shops did not carry her size, nor would they order them since they could be purchased online. We went to buy them via the UGG website, and they were sold out of the color in her size. This is when my mom decided to try calling Takken's, since that is where we purchased our slippers from when we lived in the area. Not only was this man helpful, he was able to ship us the exact UGGs we wanted - and they arrived in two days... Literally. We called Wednesday afternoon, and they were at our door on Friday. After a disappointing experience at Roxanne's, i rushed over to Takken's & as soon as i walked in the door i was treated like royalty. Since it is my birthday today, i greatly appreciated it when Aleck (from Takken's) wished me a happy birthday & went to & fro to find me the right pair of ugg boots in the right size. He told us all about the wonderful sales at Takken's & also extra information about the ugg boot company. Takken's hired a real gem when they found Aleck. I have bought things from Takkens multiple times in the past in store with no issues. Always like coming here for shoes. But recently we tried to purchase some shoes online and what a NIGHTMARE! Order was placed on 5/19 and money was pulled out immediately. We knew shipping might be slower than usual given the current circumstances, but after receiving the confirmation email we never got another email with tracking info. Again, very understandable. I tried calling to get some more information as to get an idea for the shipping window to make sure we were home as the shoes we ordered were not cheap. I called every number on the Takkens sight and was not able to get through. The main Takkens line takes you straight to an automated voicemail claiming you've called after hours. I reached out on Facebook. I called the SLO store. I finally got an answer after I called the Paso store. I was told I'd get a call back but I decided to reach out again after over 24 hours. Again, no answer. Then I tried another number I found and it routed me to the SLO store. The gentlemen was helpful but was with a customer and told me he would return my call. A few minutes later, a gentleman named Chris called I had called him a few times the day before as I got his number from the Paso store and he is in charge of online order. He was pretty rude and told me that they didn't carry the shoes we had purchased. No problem about the shoes, but he was not helpful and seemed in a rush to get off the phone. I am completely understanding that business are trying to adjust to the times but trying to get ahold of a human in the first place was like jumping through hoops! Went in today to buy work boots. A sales person by the name of Alek I believe was VERY helpful. Before it was all said and done, there must have been 5-6 boot boxes Latin g in the counter of boots that didn't fit just right, for one reason or another. Alek was extremely patient with helping me to find the right work boot. Settled on some Red Wings since Danners just seems to keep on raising their prices. Takkens just lost another customer. After receiving a pair of boots for Christmas, I went to return them (wrong size). I was told they could not reimburse me because I wasn't returning them in their original condition...they had never been worn, but I didn't have the box. They weren't given to me in the box, but I tracked it down and returned them to the store once again. This time they informed me that because my son paid cash for the boots, I would have to wait 7-10 business days for their corporate office to send me a check for reinbursement. According to the clerk, they don't keep that much cash on hand...seriously? It was $97; too much to keep on hand? I understand putting refunds on the used credit card. But I don't understand not refunding cash for checks. And don't even get me started on the poor customer service... I won't be giving anymore of my business to Takken's. read more
