What a pleasant surprise! We found Takoi on Yelp and decided to make reservations for dinner. We went right at opening at 4pm so it was still quiet. I can definitely see the night club vibe. It was a nice surprise to see all the food in daylight since it was beautiful! Som tum Thai - delicious! It is definitely on the spicier side but really refreshing and bold flavors. It came with green papaya, peanuts, and long beans. Khao soi - topped with crispy noodles, a lime wedge, and a side of chili crisp. Mine just had one drumstick, but the broth was delicious. Recommend ordering the roti to finish off the delicious broth! Thai fried chicken sandwich - wow! Move over Popeyes! Great crunch from the slaw with coconut milk and good heat! Crispy spare ribs - don't sleep on these! Comes with four pieces, fried on the outside but tender inside. Delicious sticky fish sauce caramel. Coconut milk ice cream - it's vegan but you wouldn't know it! It is a little icier but once it melts, it's creamy! There's also a sesame nut brittle, passion fruit, lime zest, and caramel. Takoi is the perfect date night spot, combining an intimate upscale dining experience with a blade runner aesthetic. The Thai food is the best I have ever had, with friendly service. Honestly best restaurant in Michigan hands down! Second time coming to Takoi, and we shared the Khao Soi (11/10) and jungle mussels (9.5/10). Both dishes were super delicious, but the curry broth of each are the stars of the show. Absolutely need to get sticky rice to eat with the remaining broth, a straight trip to flavor town. And can't leave Takoi without their delicious coconut ice cream dessert with mango purée (9/10). This dish is perfect size for two people, and is not overwhelmingly sweet like most desserts. I had heard raving reviews about Takoi before checking it out, and am happy to say it didn't disappoint. Located in Corktown, Takoi offers up some great happy hour deals, as well as a trendy place for date nights/ dinners/ etc. The first time I came was for dinner, where we ordered the most popular items (per what our waitress recommended), which was the som tum thai, BBQ spare ribs, and khao soi. The flavors of each dish were soo yummy, and I was surprised at how much I liked the som tum thai (since I am not the biggest fan of papaya). The drinks were a bit strong for the both of us, and I ended up only drinking 1/2 of mine since it just tasted of vodka and not much else. The inside of the dining area is interesting since it looks like a club with their neon lighting, and the service was very attentive the whole meal. I came for happy hour again a few weeks later and enjoyed their ramen and another drink that tasted much better. The happy hour is only at the bar or outside, so would recommend going on a nicer day since the bar area is relatively small/ has limited tables if you go with a group. read more

She is incredible both in mixology and personality! We enjoyed a few off menu cocktails and some delicious vegan menu items. At least 50% of the menu is vegetarian and/or can be modified to vegan. This is not your standard Thai food. Really special additions and extras you need to try. Portions are quite large. I had read reviews talking about tasting or tapas size dishes. Not the case with the four we ordered. The vibe is dinner in the alley by street lights ;) The outside is plain and slightly uninviting with the super tall fence around it. Go in. You won't be sorry. First of all in a very odd location and don't expect many things around it. One of the only things in the area. Claims it's Thai fusion but i didn't really understand what was fusion about it. Very dark and loud with little seating so it was very small. We were seated right next to the kitchen which made it even harder to hear each other. Server was very good and attentive and also let us know about all the optional modifications. We loved their drinks and although they looked simplistic they were very tasty. Their apps are not it to be honest and didn't wow us. The Khao Soi was amazing though and really saved the meal. We also liked the Black pepper tofu but thought it was a touch too salty. Made reservations for a Friday night through tock. They charge you $25/person to make a reservation, which then is a deposit towards your meal. A group of 6 of us came in together, which was great because we got to try a number of different dishes. They usually recommend 1-2 per person, depending on which portion of the menu you order from. We started with 3 salads--the Som Tum Thai, the Naam khao tod and the mushroom tofu laap. The Som Tum Thai is a papaya salad and it was very spicy but also flavorful. Definitely very refreshing. The Naam khao Tod was interesting in its texture and the curried flavor of the crispy rice and cold pork cubes added a nice contrast. The Mushroom Tofu Laap was served with bibb lettuce and fresh cucumber slices. The flavor was pretty lemongrass heavy and also was a little salty, but the texture from the toasted rice powder added a new element. For main dishes, we went with the Tom kha ramen, the crispy Thai fried chicken, the phat phrik king, lamb noodles, crispy spare ribs and the tiger cry steak. The Tom kha ramen was absolutely delicious. The broth was a little creamy and heavy and the Thai basil and lemongrass was a nice compliment to the coconut cream. The tofu was also flavorful. The crispy Thai fried which was served piping hot; but was inconvenient to share. To make this more family style, I'd recommend a slider version. The chicken was very tender and the slaw also added further crunch. The lamb noodles were interesting. Since they were whole wheat, they were a little thicker and less soft than most. I wasn't a fan of the peas since they added a bit of sweetness to the dish, but the lamb was tender and flavorful and the sauce was tasty as well. The phat phrik king was probably my favorite dish of the evening. It was a walleye stir fry with green beans and my goodness--the fish was served so hot and crispy and the sauce was just amazing. Highly recommend this dish! We did order some rice on the side, but it wasn't necessary as there wasn't really a lot of extra sauce. The tiger cry steak was a bit of a let down, especially for the price point. The steak itself was tender and cooked medium rare, but the sauce lacked flavor. We've had a lot of tiger cry dishes but this was definitely a miss. Finally, the crispy spare ribs had a great glaze and flavor, but were a tad over cooked so the meat was a little more chewy than we usually like but overall yes enjoyed it. We did have a birthday so we finished the meal with their one and only dessert, which was a coconut cream ice cream with mango purée and some crunch on top. This was a take it or leave it for us for next time. Also would be remiss to not mention the amazing service we got from Christian. He helped elevate our meal to the next level. read more

Takoi is cool. And not in a trying too hard or we think we are great way. It does not look like much from the outside, a large shipping container with a not so welcoming gate on the west end of Corktown. Inside is simple decor, cider block walls, low seating, and neon illuminating lights. The service is good, laid back but also on top of their tables. The menu is not large, but a reasonable selection of upscale and modern Thai. Dishes are meant to be shared (and it's much more fun to do so anyway), so we ordered one plate from each section. Naem Khao Tod was incredibly flavorful and textured with crispy rice with just a good amount of spice. Khao Soi is a curried noodle soup with a chicken leg, also flavorful in a completely different way. the dish itself is not spicy, they do bring spice that you can add to taste. The broth was scrap the bowl good, the chicken fall off the bone tender. The crispy spare ribs are as good as described, just enough or crispy battered and glazed. The only item that was not great was the fried rice, it was good-fine, but in comparison to everything else, it felt boring. We ended with the coconut ice cream, smooth ice cream topped with crunchy bits and caramel sauce, it's amazing and completely worth the calories and saving space in your belly for, one of my favorite desserts in Detroit. They also have an outdoor, causal sitting area where you can order from the window, I'm not sure of how much of the menu is served. During separate visit, we stopped by for drinks and dessert. It's also a very cool space after dark, when the trees are lite up, has an ethereal vibe. read more

This may be one of my favorite restaurants and I'm sad we discovered this place right as husband was leaving Detroit. Delicious asian fusion (thai-based). We got their tasting menu both times and MAN IS IT WORTH IT. You basically get like 8 FULL SIZED dishes off their menu. It's about $65 per person, but it's worth it. Husband and I tried to tackle the tasting menu by ourselves each time and well you can imagine how much we overate and still took leftovers home. I do believe they change their menu with some seasonal items since we got a few different dishes, but EVERYTHING is delicious. They generally have a great balance of sweet, salty, and sour. I love their papaya salad. The ground beef wrap was only ok - salty - we added some of the dressing from the papya salad as a sour note and it was great. Their brussels were ok (not as roasted as i usually like, but the hummus paired with it was great. Who knew grilled lettuce could be so delicious XD. Corn salad was also moneyyyy. The beef rib is gigantic and so tender. We love their chicken. I mean I was eyeing their WHOLE FISH the whole time and the second time we went, our waiter told us one more dish left after we were stuffed and what do you know, they bring out a whole fried fish the size of my forearm. It was crispy and flakey and moist. DELISH. The sauce for the fish wasn't my favorite I think it was on the salty side, but I could left it slide. This is probably officially my favorite restaurant in Detroit and probably the best Thai food around! I was absolutely head-over-heels in love with every dish my friend and I ordered. Everything was so scrumptious and packed with flavor, SO much flavor! Everything was so drastically different from one another too and I just absolutely love the variety they are able to create in this kitchen. The space is definitely very moody vibes. The lights are dim and slowly go through the entire spectrum of colors and it definitely feels like all the best parts of the club with your own personal space completely undisturbed. Currently, you need a reservation in order to eat here and to place a reservation, you need to pay a deposit of $25 per person, which then goes towards your bill at the end of the meal. I really don't mind this system as it just makes it so that only serious reservations are made, which helps the restaurant out with knowing what to expect and when! The food is served very tapas style, so definitely order a handful of dishes for the table for you all to eat from. My friend and I were a party of 2 and we ordered 4 dishes, which was a good amount just because there are WAY too many delicious dishes on the menu we wanted to try. We DEFINITELY had a bit left over on two of the dishes, so we were able to take those to-go. I took home the panang curry and was sooo happy to - that was probably my favorite dish. I was able to mix it into some more rice I made at home and eat the leftover curry for at least 3 more meals - YUM! The only downside here is that their sides are pretty small. We ordered a side of jasmine rice and a side of roti for our 4 dishes. The bowl of jasmine rice was SO small and they only gave us one slice of roti. This place is small but mighty lol. Very dark, sexy atmosphere with a bomb ass R & B playlist! For sure an ideal date spot. Ordered the Promises in Vortex drink which is tequila based. It was super refreshing with a subtle, deliciously spicy kick. For a starter I ordered Khanom Krok which are sweet coconut cream pancakes and for my entree ordered the crispy spare ribs with sticky rice. Came here on a Saturday and I highly recommend making reservations. I did not have one but got lucky and was able to put my name down to get seated at the bar (the dining room was reservations only and was fully booked). This was around 5:30 PM on a Saturday. I was told the wait was 45 minutes and the people who came behind me were informed the wait was now 1 and 1/2 hours! Also, once seated at the bar I saw multiple people/groups come in and get turned away due to no reservations and the bar being full. My friend ordered the High Seas which is a non-alcoholic drink but you have the options to add alcohol and she added whiskey. The Khanom Krok was not what I was expecting and like nothing I've had before, I thoroughly enjoyed them. The taste reminded me of spicy kettle corn lol, it was fun trying to pinpoint with my girl WHAT exactly it reminded us of! As an aside...While we were there who should walk in but the incomparable Billy Porter from Pose/American Horror Story! We gave him his space but were able to speak with him briefly and he was so nice and gracious! His energy was as vibrant as it is onscreen. Now for the other star of the night...the crispy spare ribs! If you visit Takoi you MUST order these. Mine were cooked to perfection and were so damn sweet, delectable and crispy in the best way! I continually get swayed by sticky rice lol. Always ordering it and for some reason expecting a life changing rice when it's simply (to me)....clumpy rice. Sorry but it's the same experience with this rice for me every place I order it. Despite this, it was a good accompaniment to the ribs, helping to soak up all that additional delicious caramelized fish sauce. My companion ordered the fried mushroom dish, which my sample of the mushroom was amazing. It was fried and seasoned perfectly. She also ordered the fried cauliflower; she enjoyed both but said the sauce on the cauliflower was extremely spicy. So spicy she had to order a side of the caramelized fish sauce (she really enjoyed mine) to put on it and she said that helped immensely letting her enjoy all the spicy flavor. This review is for the Root pickup pop-up they did in Ann Arbor specifically. We ordered a few canned cocktails: Promises in Vortex, Psychic Mirrors, and Special Tea...all of which were well balanced and delicious. I always appreciate the option to enjoy a takeout cocktail at home. I would love to try more of their bar menu in person sometime. For entrees we ordered Khao Soi and Green Curry, both of which had awesome and authentic depth of flavor. However -- and we are people who enjoy and tolerate spicy food very well -- both dishes were by default very spicy considering no spice level was requested or specified in the menu, to the point where I had difficulty eating mine and ended up saving some to eat later. The green curry also didn't come with rice -- not sure if they missed putting it in our bag or it doesn't come with it, but I'm glad I made some rice to go with it because I really needed it to offset the heat. The coconut milk ice cream was great, especially the dulce de leche sauce. We also enjoyed the mango sauce and sesame almond topping, as well as the silky, almost whipped texture of the non-dairy ice cream. One of the best restaurants I've been to recently. We went with a group of friends and ordered the Green Papaya Salad, Grilled Broccoli, Grilled Carrot, and Green Curry. The Grilled broccoli was the star of the night- such amazing flavors blended together so very well. Grilled carrot with sateh sauce was really nice as well, it had a strong hint of turmeric though. The Green Curry was very flavorful with raisins, kaffir lime leaves , basil etc and it had tempura-like pieces of eggplant. However, the quantity was so less that you cannot share it. I was disappointed with the quantity of green curry in the dish. We ordered ice cream towards the end and it was a hearty end to our meal. Got the khao soi which was so so. Khanom krok is unique and pretty good. Grilled octopus was on the bitter side due to how salty it was. Could not finish the meal and I'm usually a garbage disposal and eat left over for 1 month after expiration date Portions were small, food is pricey for how you little you get Also has a mandatory 20% tip. Last time i checked, tips is optional. Also if you truly believe in fair wages for the food industry, then increase the menu prices to include the tips. Big disappointment read more

Takoi is a cool spot for a chill night in Detroit -- definitely worth checking out if you're in the area and looking for a place to hang out with a drink. I stopped by Takoi late on a Friday night in June 2021, it was a solid experience overall, but one quick caveat: you should expect to have reservations in advance if you're looking to go on a busy night like Friday. We lucked out and were able to get drinks outdoors (and had an easy time finding a table since it was raining when we arrived), but even from the brief time inside the restaurant, I could tell it had a cool ambiance. Very instagram-able but as I mentioned, make sure you get a reservation if you're looking for indoor seating. The drinks themselves weren't bad -- Takoi definitely presents some interesting takes on old classics (drinks similar to margaritas, G&Ts, etc.), but I'm not 100% convinced on if they're necessarily better than what a classic version would've been. I think they're certainly worth trying once, but it's really up to your own palate on if the twists on the drinks are good. All told, I'd say it's worth giving Takoi a shot if you're in the area -- and mind you I've only been there for drinks, I hear their food is fantastic too (I'll need to go back and confirm :) ) read more

The interior of this restaurant is one of the coolest in Detroit, which sets a really nice ambiance when you're there. It's a bit of a smaller space, so I would consider it more for date nights rather than dinners with a group. The ethos is really around trying out a variety of small plates and sharing, rather than ordering a single entree, which I like in concept, but can add up to being a pretty expensive meal. I do think that the value isn't always there for what you're getting, but it's a unique dining experience and worth trying out. read more

Had some family visiting from out of town and decided to take them to try out this restaurant. We had a reservation for a Friday night and were able to easily find street parking. The restaurant seemed pretty busy and the interior seemed to be very young and hip. We ordered a variety of dishes to share family style including the Crispy BBQ Spare Ribs, Khao Soi, Fried Chicken Sandwich, Green Curry, and Gai Yaang. We also had two sides of stick rice which complimented the other dishes very well. The green curry was my favorite dish of the night. It was so rich in flavor and even my mom who is wary of vegetarian dishes also really liked it. The noodles of the Khao Soi were also delicious and I loved the broth that it was in. I was glad to have more people in my party to be able to try more dishes. I will definitely be back to try more of the menu! read more

Incredible dining experience. I was able to book Takoi for my sisters engagement dinner/birthday dinner. Takoi was very easy to work with and even cut the cake we brought in for free. Their staff is also incredibly knowledgeable. Key notes - the dinners require a reservation and deposit if you plan on actually eating here. Unless you want to wait about three hours on most days. They were able to accommodate a party of 12 in the center of the restaurant. I recommend doing it in the summer so there's more space but it was still great. The dinner is definitely an experience not to be missed...with a side of whole fish. My favorite dish to recommend is their papaya salad. It has the perfect kick - unreal flavor. They do Thai very well. I wish I could afford to frequent here weekly! read more
