What I love about this place is that it's a local family owned restaurant. They literally make you feel like family. The food is fresh and the prices are reasonable. What I'm not crazy about is the amount of time it takes to have dinner. The last time I was here I walked out before I placed my order. Why? Because they don't have enough people working here and we were getting zero attention. I wasn't in the mood to go to a loud "happening" place so we landed here tonight. Same story as the last time. I took my parents here while they were out to visit me after reading some reviews online and I'm so glad I did. I'm usually skeptical of restaurants located in or around a mall, but this place was incredible. In addition to their sushi and hibachi menus, they also have cold and hot tasting options which seem to be where the chefs really get to be creative. We had the spicy tuna gyoza and the Peking duck dumplings which were both out of this world. The sushi was also phenomenal, with fresh high-quality fish and perfectly balanced flavors. Based on my travels to Japan and Michelin star restaurants, this restaurant falls short in too many ways to come back. It claims to be authentic, which may be the case, but it seems poorly run and executed. How can you put omakase as an appetizer that has nothing to do with chef's special sushi or sashimi? Moreover, the Japanese style sashimi with 13 pieces was of average quality. Worse yet, they replaced sliced, shredded radish with carrots. They ran out of blue fin tuna, but even the kanburi was mediocre despite the larger portions to justify the high prices. The uni tasted awful, not fresh at all to the point of making me worry if I'll get sick. Their soups are salty or too peppery. Even the red version of miso tastes too concentrated as if nobody tasted it before serving it especially to those who may have high blood pressure. Worse yet, they fail my test for tamago and rice. You can easily spend over $250 without getting much quality for anything even decor. The chef and staff are Japanese and friendly. However, they don't seem to know how to resolve problems or pay attention to details. Customers have to remind them or suggest solutions, ranging from seating to missing ordered items. I don't write that many reviews but I am compelled to write this one.... Another Yelper's critical review from 2023 was unfortunately spot on and still relevant... My wife and I were really hopeful that Takumi would be a gem, we bought into their marketing that the sushi chef/owner was trained in Japan with 40 years of experience. It was a major letdown. Our group of 8 was 4 adults, one teenager and 3 young kids - 7 and 9 year olds. Being that it was a Saturday, I called ahead for a 6 pm reservation, no problem. (Read on, the warning is at the end). We got there on time and were the first customers. The waitress who is apparently also the wife of the sushi chef was friendly and attentive. We studied the menu, asked her about the "high grade sushi" of their rather pricey Japanese style sushi ($50 for 9 pc) and Takumi for 2 ($95 for 18 pc) and she rattled off a few names of the fish. We ordered both. Turned out to be nothing special. Except for the scallops, there were just some yellowtail (kanburi), some light pink-colored "blue fin tuna", mackerel, salmon roes, some egg omelette (tamago), and a couple of other fish. The fish's quality was ok- I would not consider them high grade, but the sushi rice was not good. Texture and seasoning of the rice were off, not what we would expect from an authentic Japanese sushi place, we have had much better sushi rice at some Chinese-owned sushi restaurants. The octopus sashimi that we ordered on the side was nothing we had tasted or experienced before... it had some dark spots in the usually white fleshy part, and when we bit into them, liquid came out of the sashimi! My wife and daughter each ate a piece anyway, but I could not, I have never had any octopus sashimi that looked and tasted that way, looked and felt like it was previously frozen but not completely thawed, hence the water/liquid still in the flesh. I considered sending it back but my friend said why bother. I should have taken pictures and at least voiced my concern. The cooked appetizers were also disappointing. Age tofu (Age = fried) is supposed to be tofu coated in potato starch, deep fried and served in a dashi broth - they used firm instead of soft or silken tofu, and served them in a dark brown liquid that looked and tasted like dark soy sauce with water. Dashi is a basic Japanese broth, I can't believe an authentic Japanese restaurant does not use that for their Age tofu. Their udon noodles were fine, the kids ate them without complaint, the age tofu would have been better if they had just used the same udon soup as the "dashi". The final letdown/slap though came when we got the handwritten check. There was a 20% service fee added, which we did not know the restaurant would add for any party of more than 6 - she didn't tell me when I called to reserve the table, and it was not printed on their menus. Fine, we were going to tip 20% anyway. But then she handed me her hand held device and asked me to select a tips amount, with 20%, 22% and 25% suggested. I said, well you already charged us 20% service fee so I don't need to tip, that's when she said they charge a 20% service fee for any group of more than 6, and that tips are on top of that. I said no, restaurants add on 18% or 20% automatically for larger groups to make sure they get the proper amount of tips, but she insisted I was wrong, said this is done everywhere in NY! I have never been asked to pay tips on top of a mandatory 20% service fee as part of a larger group anywhere, not in other states, in NY or on Long Island! By then my group had all gone outside of the restaurant, and I did not have the energy to argue with her so I just gave her another 20% tips and left, altogether 40%. My wife and friends could not believe I gave in. For what I could see, the restaurant is just her and her husband/chef, who ran back and forth between the sushi counter and the kitchen so he was probably cooking the hot food too. The restaurant was not full on a Saturday evening, it must not be easy to run that business. The almost $80 of completely non-transparent "service fee" was tough to swallow, my wife and my friend said I should have ignored her and paid no tips, but I did not want to fight with a nice, older woman. Lesson learned- don't automatically believe the hype of "real Japanese chef", and always ask if they charge mandatory service fee for larger group. We will not be going back to Takumi of Commack. read more

I wished that I could give this a higher rating. Found this sushi spot as a result of searching on Yelp and read the reviews that sounded promising. Unfortunately, the sushi didn't taste that great. There was way too much rice and wasabi in each piece - it was as if they were trying to mask the taste of the fish. I don't know if it's just because of takeout but I'd expect if I ordered the Japanese Sushi (highest grade) I'd get to taste the freshness of fish. All I tasted was wasabi. Came back here during lunch, and I really want to live this place because it's intimate, small family business that's Japanese owned. While the food isn't bad, the overall value is so so. My chirashi has too many fillers like imitation crab, tomago with only 7 pieces of real sashimi pieces. With the price being around $15 for lunch, I thought it was a bit steep. Also, I find that the flavor of their other dishes are a bit on the sweeter side. While it's not bad, it just falls short from some other sushi places in the area. read more

I wanted to like this place so badly. Its nearby and japanese owned. Its too bad the owner was very rude after messing up the order. I ordered the sushi and sashimi platter and it was missing 8 pieces. When I called, they said that I got the correct number of pieces, but I said their online menu showed 8 more. The first thing they said was that I must be looking at the wrong menu. Eventually, I was able to convince them look it up on their website to see that they were wrong. Unfortunately, if I knew how bad the actual fish was, I would've asked for a refund instead. Not fresh, and the rice was dry. Not a single redeeming quality to this place. I liked the idea of this place being authentic Japanese restaurant(owned and operated by Japanese which is rare). However, the restaurant is not up to the rave review by others. It didn't feel like a clean place to eat. The indoor air was stuffy and the carpet was too dirty. Also overpriced food was inadequate to be called Authentic Japanese foods. We ordered chirash & japanese style sushi. The sushi was too small, the rice was too much(sushi and rice portion is very important) and it was over priced for the quality of food. Even beer was not as cold as it should be. SiI didn't try any other dishes, so it might be better but I will never know. Only thing good was that the waitress was extremely nice. read more

From time-to-time, one of my friends from the Hamptons posts on Facebook pictures of his meals at Takumi, which caught my attention esp. because it's very close to where I live; I figured it was worth a visit to see what the experience was about. First off, the miso soup just seems right: the scallions taste crisper and feel more nimble (Does anyone need a food editor-at-large, BTW?). I've been to many sushi establishments in western Suffolk, and the only other one that gets it right like this? Kotobuki. As for the sushi platter I ordered, the rice, which delightfully melts in your mouth, didn't fall apart upon picking a piece up, even a "torture test" proving futile. Speaking of "torture tests," every sushi establishment I visit of late, I give at least the tuna a good sniff or three. Most of the time, you get a fishy-like smell, which I personally don't mind. But when I sniffed the tuna here, I was pleasantly greeted to a seaside, crackling quality that translated well into subtle flavors. Oh, and the nori had a nice crispness to it too. Speaking as a Kotobuki loyalist, Takumi isn't the bigger, well-oiled machine, and apparently, has had some bad moments as well. But I've had bad experiences at places I swear by and rate five-stars, and the fact they more than hold their own to the big man in town is all the more impressive. This is the best Japanese restaurant on Long Island. Takumi has excellent sushi and traditional dishes. If you want Japanese food and sushi in a lovely and welcoming setting this is the place for you. The owner and head sushi chef Yukio Okamura has 28 plus years of sushi experience both here in the USA as well as in his native Japan. This shows in his selection of fish, his sushi rice and his excellent and diverse roll offerings. Mr. Okamura's wife Kiyomi is a gracious and friendly host who wants to make sure you enjoyed everything you are eating as well as your time. She is a delight and supremely helpful. You will be supremely happy having found this place. With Nisen and other local sushi and "Japanese" locations becoming more and more about the ambiance and less about the food Takumi is truly a treasure. Loyalists would love to keep this place a secret! The elbow to elbow sardine feel at Kotobuki is terrible and patrons would assuredly hate for this place to end up that way. However the Okamura's and every sushi lover on Long Island should be introduced. Hope to see a few of you there! read more

Japanese Finding a Japanese restaurant on Long Island that is actually owned and operated by Japanese is becoming something of an elusive quest these days, but Takumi is the real deal. A relatively small place in a somewhat bad location makes it very easy to overlook this establishment but if you do find it, you will be rewarded with a much more authentic sushi experience than what you get at the huge sushi/hibachi mills that are all over the place. Owned and operated by a husband and wife team, the places is small and unassuming - as most sushi places used to be. The menu is standard in the selection of appetizers, sushi, rolls and the like and of course, they have their own special rolls to choose from. The sushi was fresh and nicely prepared and the service was perfect. As owners, they take great pride in their place and are easy to talk to and extremely pleasant. Since I have a lot of experience with Japanese culture, it was fun to chat with them and they were happy to see someone who knew the food and asked for some of the more odd items. Prices were cheap in my opinion - the rolls seemed to hover around 8-10 dollars with some of the more special rolls running up to $16. I didn't check those but am curious as to what they are. It's rare to find such an awesome hole-in-the-wall authentic Japanese this far into the Island, and I was so pleasantly surprised when I came upon this place via Yelp! The restaurant is situated in a forgotten strip mall, and I was so happy to find this homey restaurant staffed by a wonderful Japanese family. I was one of two tables occupied (how is that possible when the food is so good??), and the server/mom checked on me periodlically to make sure I was okay. She also advised me to eat the handroll with my hands ("no chopsticks needed! Eat with hand!") when she saw me struggling with it with my chopsticks. The sushi/sashimi lunch combo came with a soup and salad, and the portions were generous enough where I was unsure if I could finish the whole thing (which I totally did)! Believe it or not most of the other sushi restaurants have Chinese chefs. You feel like you are dining in their house. The sushi is super fresh and they have different fish that nobody else has. They also are the only place I know of that serves wild salmon all the other places in the area serve farm raised. They have great lunch specials as well. read more

Looking for a Japanese owned and operated sushi restaurant on Long Island? This tiny strip place in Commack is one of the very few. I really like the interior filled with Japanese drawings, origami and masks. You'll be warmly greeted by the sushi chef upon entering and warmly served by his wife. Started with a nice salad with a sweet and tangy sesame dressing. Next was a bowl of delicious soba noodle soup with a fantastic broth. Tekka don was pretty big with fresh tuna sashimi over sushi rice. The shredded nori though was the only odd man out in the dish for me. Service is friendly and welcoming and prices are average. We went here last night to celebrate a wedding anniversary. We were met at the door by the smiling waitress, who proceeded to offer us hand sanitizer and hot towels. The friendly attention had me thinking we were going to have a great dinner. Until the food came. The shumai dish was 5 of the tiniest morsels I've ever seen of this appetizer, with okay taste. The agé tofu was pretty tasty and the (red) miso soup was fine as well. But the sushi was profoundly awful. I paid $18 for a special roll (sky tree) that was a thick layer of rice stuffed with mayonnaise glop that tasted fishy without any semblance of the actual fish that may have gone into its making. I've honestly never had worse sushi in a restaurant on Long Island. My husband's Mets roll was somewhat better in that you could see the fish, but it did not taste fresh and was rolled loosely with a haphazard presentation on the plate. Maybe they were having a bad day, but I will not take the chance of going back to to see if that's the case. It's a shame, because the staff appeared so nice and earnest. Solid authentic Japanese restaurant with well-executed dishes, very personable service, and a serene pleasant interior. On this visit, we didn't go for any sushi or sashimi, electing to go with our favorite Japanese comfort foods. We started off with some appetizers which included an outstanding fried soft shell crab, crispy light batter outside and light and moist as a cloud inside (I regret we didn't order more of this ... ). Their fried gyoza was also excellent as well as the 2 seafood salads we had. I ordered my go-to comfort food: tempura udon noodle soup and it came in a hot tasty broth with a brace of big tempura ebi slowly soaking up the soup flavors. My wife and kids had grilled eel, either over rice or with hot soba noodles; the eel was unctuous, salty-sweet, and utterly delicious. For dessert, Takumi had macarons so we had to try these - they were very good macarons, crisp outer shell and soft textured interior, better executed than many bakeries. On the proprietress's recommendation, we also tried their Japanese apple pie - why oh why didn't we ever hear of this before? Or seen it on the menus of other Japanese restaurants? Trust me, this place is very overrated. Not only is the large amount of rice used in the sushi overbearing and disproportionate, but the taste of the rice is extremely bland and not well-seasoned, and the consistency of the rice is a bit thin and almost water-logged. It's seemingly more akin to Chinese takeout white rice rather than sticky sushi rice. As far as the fish, the quality is not very good, and the cuts made by the chef tend to look mangled, sloppy, and unprofessional. I found myself spitting out quite a bit of unchewable tendon from my tuna. I have a feeling that this place garners rave reviews and write-ups because people like the fact that this is a family-run business and that the owner is a sushi chef from Japan, thus giving it an air of authenticity, and not because the sushi is actually good. read more

Takumi is an absolute gem hidden in this tiny strip. The owners Kiyomi-san and Yuki-san, who are a couple from Toyko, Japan, make the absolute most traditional and flavorful Japanese food you can possibly get in all of US. If you love Japanese food and want basically what you would be getting if you were to go to Japan, that is Takumi. Charming and unassuming spot for authentic Japanese cuisine. Owned and run by a couple from Tokyo, you can tell that they are passionate about sharing their culture with their customers. Very different experience than the other sushi spots in the area in terms of service and the meal itself. I had Gyudon for the first time and it was incredibly flavorful. The rice is fluffy and moist as it shouled be, their special rolls are beautifuly presented with just the right proportion of sauce. Update. Dropped two stars. Last two excursions here were disappointing. Prices have gone up a lot, and quality seems to be down. Beer was tepid, not cold as a lager should be. Sake selection was good, but too pricy for junmai ginjo and daiginjo. Felt Mrs. O was being a bit too pushy for certain items that sounded great but were really run-of-the mill when served. Will put this place on the back burner for now. Unfortunate. Original review follows: This family-run Japanese restaurant is a gem, limited only by its low-key feel and six (6) tables. Having been a student of Japanese cuisine since the 70's, this restaurant is one I approve of, and the best on Long Island for a cozy, welcoming feel. The food is prepared to order, and many dishes common to "Asian" restaurants are missing. why? Because they are not Japanese. The Okamura family will reward those eager to explore the wealth of flavor in Japanese eating. The owner and his wife are the chef/waitress, and are very nice, polite, and eager to please. His training was of the traditional form, in Japan. This is not absolutely necessary, but helpful, especially when the training and personality team up to make the dining experience a pleasant one. The restaurant is never packed, with a lot of business done via take-away. The sushi and sashimi are of high quality, but "exotics" make rare appearances, I believe, because there is not enough clientele to make these super-perishable treats viable financially. They have to go with what sells, but do this at a high level. Kitchen items are prepared correctly and attractively. Noodle and cooked items are abundant on the menu, as they should be in a real Japanese restaurant. Never a disappointment, this restaurant is a special treat, and really worth it, especially for those who are not quite sure that their "Japanese" restaurant is authentic. Missing 5* because their sushi/sashimi menu is often limited to "standards" and does not regularly handle in-season hard- to find items like specialty shellfish, more exotic fish, etc. If the volume was there, I am sure they would include. read more
