I've been coming to Show Win on and off for the past 15 years, and it's always consistently and good. I've been twice in the last month. For a friend's birthday, we had a group of about six and were seated in the private enclosed area in the back, which was perfect for a celebratory dinner. Most recently, I had dinner with a friend. During both visits, service was quick, and the staff were friendly and attentive. During the most recent visit, we started with edamame and then ordered specialty rolls. We were very impressed on our first visit to Sho Win the other day, as we always pass it but never stop in for dinner, so this time we did. The outside is deceiving, while it looks like the place is falling apart, the inside is suprisingly nicer, and has remained the same probably for over 30 years as it is super dated, but that vibe was kinda cool. Huge menu, lots of choices, and friendly service, we ordered a bunch of stuff. What was most impressive was the timing of the service, after each thing we ordered, be it App, Sushi Roll, or Main Course, it always came out like exactly as we were finishing the dish. Review for service and generally the look of the place on a walk-in take-out at 6:20 pm on a Thursday. Call or order online, don't walk into this place or expect service for takeout as you'll be left standing there ignored for the phone ringing constantly. Walked in and instead of asking if I wanted to order, was skipped over for two people who walked in behind me I guess bc I grabbed a menu even though I never broke eye contact. Ordered two things and had a question, then she answered me, but instead of completing and placing order, she picked up phone and ignored me for another 5 min. And two more people on phone ordered in front of me. All my time in NYC I've never seen this kind of blatant ignoring to a customer standing there with no clue she was doing anything wrong. Sitting there there's pealed paint from what appeared to be water damage in 5-6 please along ceiling with dimly lit lighting. Doest appear to be well taken care of interior. I've overlooked the weeds in the gutter, the old couch in the parking lot as well as the dilapidated siding on the outside of the restaurant but when the waitress was picking the sleepers out of her eyes then examining them on her fingers I'm thoroughly grossed out and will not go back! I've been going here for decades and have to move on. The food here is generally decent, but tonight I found plastic in my shrimp fried rice. I've been going here for years, but I've now realized that other Japanese places offer far better quality in their food than this. Show win is no longer what it used to be. The place is filthy and smells like old food. Food quality is horrible, low grade tuna, dried out rice, bland salmon, eel tasted funny. Found a hair in one of the rolls. When I called they told me they never get complaints and the food is good. I said yea it used to but over the last two years it keeps getting worse. We're talking raw seafood here !!! Never going back will drive to Kashi in Hu tj from where they care about customer service and care. And don't over charge for crap. Gosh how I wish Show Win had better maki rolls. I can give specific examples. I usually get sushi from Miss Sakura (it's all right), but decided to try Show Win, and after not a great experience, I figd I'd give them a second try. All are take-out rolls, but being pandemic time, eating indoors is a risky move anyway. I chose from a good-sized list of maki rolls and special rolls, but no more extensive than most places in the area. Many of the rolls were "spicy", which I try to avoid, b/c 1) I want my sushi to taste like sushi, not spicy mayo, and 2) strong sauce flavors hide sins. If I'm eating bad fish, I want to taste that, so I can stop and not get sick. But a lotta people like spicy sushi, so whatever. Speaking of strong flavors, though, I feel like the Show Win soy sauce is very salty. Don't they use Kikkoman like everyone else? Anyway, back to spice - my shrimp tempura rolls were spicy. Spicy mayo in a shrimp tempura roll? It might have been wasabi, but still - what? My rainbow roll had both black and white sesame seeds, a nice touch, but it was rolled loosely with thick fish, so it fell apart easily. It was hard to eat. I'm no Danielsan catching flies, but I can manage chopsticks. Dragon roll? Bones in the eel. From a sushi chef? Disappointing. The fried gyoza were crisp, but I would have prefered pan fried (like most gyoza) instead of deep-fried (put in with the tempura?) Finally, what really pissed me off was that I was charged almost $18 for both the rainbow roll and the dragon roll, when their website says, like, $12.50. What gives?? And no, not an Uber Eats upcharge, it's what the restaurant actually charged (then Uber Eats adds its own nonsense). Show Win is very close to me so I wish it were better. Judging by the diverse yelp reviews I was initially put off but decided Show Win wasn't so bad after all. Service: Incredible! Maybe it was a slow night? Our waitress was attentive, sweet and downright chatty! She was exuberantly telling us about traditional Japanese seating arrangements, her knife skills (and former lack of, whoops!) and types of sushi she likes. She was a little confused at times (probably at the amount of sushi we scarfed down, no less!), but overall perfect. Other service staff constantly and quietly came by to refill tea, take plates, etc. Sushi: Presented well, but could use some improvement. We ordered the sushi sashimi combo for three. To the staff's eyebrow raising shock, there were only two of us. I didn't feel the portion was very large at all (for 2), and it honestly wasn't a challenge to finish. The fish was cut in hearty, clean thick slices but some were better then others. Salmon, Yellowtail and White Tuna were fantastic, however the rest of the fish left something to be desired. The accompanying maki rolls were decent at best, one was made solely of avocado with tuna on top. Ambiance: They have both tatami rooms and bamboo clad booths that necessitate you to take your kicks off. Show win aspires to be traditional and modern at the same time. It's all super clean. I like it. Minus my dining companions foot order... or was it mine? Phew. Would I come back? Maybe, but not unless I was in the area again and having a hankering for sushi. Soda- no free refills, a side of Tito's neat $13 each and about the size of one shot- one drink= over $15 each!!! I thought I had written a previous review about how I thought Show Win went completely down hill. Turns out I never got around to it. Well, heres the breakdown: It USED to be the best. Quaint, traditional, and good value. Undoubtedly on my top ten list. They then renovated and tried to make a bit more.. "techno modern" (read: blue lights). They also significantly reduced the fish to rice ratio, and they increased the prices by about 15%. Not the end of the world, but it slipped down in the ranks when compared to other local places (ex: Nisen). Regardless, it was still the best local place, so my wife and I still managed to get take out every once in a while. The good news is that I picked up take out last night, and then again tonight, and I have to say they seem to have to corrected the largest issue I had: the fish to rice ratio. Makes the minor price increase not as painful, and also takes it off the list of places that I go to only because I don't have options. Throughout the up and downs, the largest redeeming value point for this place (especially if your a sushi nerd) is the extremely large variety of specialty rolls. Each goes by a fun name, and are all delicious. The hardest part (after a few large sakis) is remembering which ones you liked the best so you can re-order next time. If your in the area and looking for a solid sushi meal, check it out. One disclaimer though: it's a sushi place (expensive) in a nice neighborhood, so be prepared to spend a little. read more

My friends and I had just gone hiking and wanted a nice light dinner. We opted for some sushi (good choice!). We ended up here because one of my friends has been here before. We walked in and they took us right away, we sat down in a booth where you have to take your shoes off. That was different! The place is nice inside, but the outside looks worn down. The waitress took our orders pretty quick. I got edamame as an appetizer, my friend got fried rice, and the other miso soup. The fried rice friend said it was the bomb. Edamame is always a good, refreshing app. I ended up ordering the Godzilla roll and the chicken tempura roll. Our food took a really long time to be served. As we were waiting, the restaurant got busy and there was only one waitress, so she did not pay much attention to us. Our waters weren't refilled and we weren't checked on much.. Finally, the food came. We were all very pleased with our entrées. The Godzilla roll was so tasty. Definitely a new favorite roll! The eel sauce.. mmmm! My friend said her rolls were bangin'. I think she got the Kamakazi rolls. I knocked off a few stars because of the service. When it came time to pay, it took forever for the waitress to take our payment. When she came over, we tried to explain how we wanted it split up. She was rushing and didn't bother to listen to what we were saying and ended up charging the cards wrong.. so we had to re-figure out how much each was paying. Had reservations here before seeing a show at the Engemann Theatre in Northport. The Food was very good. Nice sized portions. They lose stars for service which was awful. After being seated, we were pretty much forgotten. Waitstaff forgot to take our dinner order after we were clearly finished with apps and all drink glasses sat empty. It took a while to get our dinner and one was completely forgotten. After getting the waitress's attention, she said it would take a while longer because the kitchen was very busy. By then, most of our group was nearly finished. There was no apology nor an effort to make good to the person who had no meal. Too bad because our group really enjoyed their meals. I feel they care more about their take out customers than the people in the place. They said they are so busy? There are five tables!!!! Take care of the people who are there first! Great place for sushi they have an extensive sushi roll menu tried the Yammy Roll and the Billy What's up Roll both were excellent the Yammy Roll had crunchy shrimp tempura with mango and avocado. The restaurant has both tables and booths. If seated at a booth you take off your shoes and they are stored under the step where you climb up and into your seat. There are 2 private booths in the back for larger groups with a sliding screen for privacy. Everything was fresh and delicious we also had General Tso Chicken and a large plate of their chicken fried rice. They also have a sushi boat if you are ordering numerous rolls which comes in a large wooden boat that has nice presentation. It would have been 5 star but one item ordered was forgotten read more

More importantly the shushi is top notch. It's hard to find a good sushi place on Long Island but I strongly recommend this one. The lobster roll is my favorite; and their miso soup is incredible. This appears to be the place to be on a Friday! There were a few flaws throughout cleanliness, but the food is authentically delightful. I started off with the avocado salad. The avocado, the finely curled carrots, lettuce and Asian dressing was the combination of a lifetime. It was so yum! Then I enjoyed the Vegetable roll which included avocado, Japanese pickles and cucumber. It was too good to be true. Probably, the best sushi i have had in a while, because the Japanese pickles added such a lovely flavor to traditional sushi. One negative was that my friend happened to find an ant crawling beside us, which she described as "a large one," which we killed using the chop stick paper. Other than that and losing my key escapade which i will not waste your time (if you sit by the window i do not recommend putting your items up on the ledge because my keys fell down into the heater and it was this whole big problem). I ordered very basic to go food. Veggie fried rice and chicken fried rice, pan fried dumplings, miso soup and a small green salad. I was able to eat half of the soup my daughter ate her salad. We each had a dumpling and we couldn't choke down either fried rice. It was as if it was a frozen dinner. The veggies were absolutely from frozen. I am the vegetarian thats why the two orders of rice. My daughter took one bite of the chicken and spit it out. I have been going to sho win for 15 years. I haveseen the restaurant slowly declining, but to night was the worst. We arrived at 7:30 our order was not taken until 8:15. Our food arrived at 8:45. This place is normally very good. However, take-out has gone downhill. The portions have shrunk and the packaging has suffered as well. The tin for hot food was bent out of shape so opening our first item let the sauce spill out all over the table. The sushi rice was dry and lacking.
