Here's what we ordered: * Miso soup * Salad with ginger dressing * Two orders of gyoza * **Salmon Lover** (5 pcs sushi, 5 pcs sashimi, 1 salmon roll -- I added avocado to the roll) * **Wild Salmon Roll** (crunchy spicy salmon roll topped with three types of tobiko) * Shrimp & steak hibachi with fried rice * Chicken katsu (breaded and fried cutlet with tangy dipping sauce) * Udon noodles * Plus, they included a complimentary hot sushi roll **The highlights:** All of the sushi we ordered was *excellent* -- incredibly fresh, flavorful, and honestly some of the best I've had in a while. I would 100% order the sushi again. I was also told the hibachi and chicken katsu were delicious. **What could be improved:** The fried rice and the udon noodles were the only real letdowns; both needed more sauce or seasoning. Also, when ordering hibachi for takeout, my sister asked for the traditional hibachi sauces but was told they don't provide them. That felt a bit strange since those sauces are typically a standard part of a hibachi meal. The complimentary roll was a kind gesture, but it ended up being something no one wanted, so unfortunately it went to waste. It would be great if they offered a small choice of free items, or perhaps comped one of the appetizers already ordered, just to avoid unnecessary waste. Since this was takeout, I can't comment on service or the dine-in experience. **Price:** For the amount of food we ordered, the total was around $108 -- extremely reasonable. **Overall:** I would definitely recommend Tomo Sushi, especially for their outstanding sushi. We have been here a few times and i have to say, I really love it. It has a great atmosphere. The staff are pleasant and efficient. The sushi is fresh and really really good! You can always tell a quality sushi spot by how much rice they put in their rolls. The fish portions are generous and there is a perfect amount of rice. We got the Tuna tartar appetizer. I requested some wasabi seaweed crackers to go with it. They accommodated the request. It was amazing! We got a couple of sushi rolls too. They used to be on the smaller side but I was pleasantly surprised with the increase in size. The sushi is always fresh and delicious. I love that they have entree deals that come with soup and salad as well. The garnishes on my sushi really enhanced the flavor. Pretty quick delivery when ordering take out and always good service when dining in. Dining area has been updated and is sleek and modern. I was reluctant to try Tomo sushi because I'm not the biggest fan of sushi. In fact, I only like California Rolls. Well Tomo Sushi is SO MUCH MORE THAN SUSHI!! Right before the covid shut down, my brother-in-law wanted to go to Tomo for his birthday. He promised me that I would find something I enjoyed and boy did I enjoy it!!! The service was excellent and the food was delicious!! I had teriyaki chicken that came with rice and delicious soup and salad. We also had edemame for the table and California rolls. People in my party were raving about the sushi. In the time of covid, we have gotten take out from Tomo. The food was just as good and definitely fresh and plentiful! This place is so great never fails I think we are almost about to order everything here and we always leave happy!!!!! Everything was outstanding from the hot green tea to the better-than-homemade gyoza and softshell crab appetizers and then the pièce de résistance! The main event: Sushi! I ordered the Tuna Hana Roll, which was a spicy tuna roll topped with a thin layer of of tuna and slices of avocado. There is something crunchy inside, almost like finely ground panko perhaps. My friend ordered the Crazy Flying Dragon Roll, which was spicy tuna topped with sizzling eel. There was also that crunchy stuff inside -- good textural experience. Both rolls were outstanding. The only thing we noted is that the eel wasn't sizzling -- which was fine because I'm not sure how hot eel would've been on top of cold sushi, but we just wanted to see it sizzle. Quiet atmosphere, great for conversations because you don't have to shout over anyone. Oh -- and there is a front area with funny tables. We weren't sat here but I'd like to be some time. At first we thought it was floor seating then we noticed a recessed floor so your legs would actually dangle below the table. Bizarre yet intriguing. I WILL NEVER ORDER FROM THIS PLACE AGAIN. Just had the worst take out experience. We ordered our sushi at 5:30 and the e-mail said the order would be ready at 6:03, we got to the restaurant at 6:00 and then proceeded to stand there for over an hour while they said they were "a little backed up" yet you can clearly see the sushi chefs on the phones with not a seat occupied at the restaurant. Their customer service is absolutely horrible, after waiting for an hour at the place for our takeout order they didn't even offer up so much as an apology. They're pretty slow with the service even when it's not that busy. The order was around 30 minutes delayed than their estimated timing. The waiter that's there (not the hostess) is pretty rude and unapologetic for the delay. We loved Tomo for years and went (or got takeout) several times a month. It definitely went down in quality and like someone else on here said it would be nice to help them turn it around. The staff are nice and competent and Jimmy is a rock star. He is so warm and welcoming, treats us like friends, and is superbly attentive and professional. The place is clean, cute, and low key - really nice for conversation with fam and friends. We will be back but we've taken a break for now due to a gradual decline in food quality. This is my go to place to get sushi in Smithtown. I been here multiple times since moving to Long Island. The reason I keep on coming back is because the sushi is fresh and the prices are very fair. The restaurant is very modern and they have a Japanese style seating by the window. The service in this place is good, the people are very nice. Take out can take a little while on a busy night even if they tell 15 minutes we didn't get our order till 40 minutes later, maybe it was just that night. I normally order the sushi rolls when I come to Tomo but I have tried other items on the menu like the Chicken Bento box. The only negative I have about that dish it can be a little salty for my liking from the teriyaki sauce to spring rolls. When I order sushi I normally order the basic rolls ranging from Spicy Tuna, shrimp tempura, spicy salmon roll and spicy crap roll etc. I'm not a big fan of those speciality rolls because I feel like you get more for your buck ordering the regular rolls. In the end this is probably one of the only places around where you can find a decent sushi roll without taking a huge hit on your wallet. Been to this place multiple times and i gotta say its the best Japanese spot ive been to in Smithtown. Every specialty roll we've had.. Godzilla, Foxy Lady and a few more i cant remember have been crunchy tasty and overall solid. The chicken teriyaki combo box that comes with miso soup and salad is consistently great.. the yellow gayoza sauce is some of tbe best ive had while the portion size is reflective of the cost; as a foody i rarely leave a place feeling that way but you really get your money's worth. Green tea is solid as is the cucumber salad plate you get upon seating. Service is always attentive. And no disrespect to Aji across the strip but this place haa far better food even if the atmosphere isn't as upscale. You must go. read more

If you're craving a quieter sushi experience, far from the EDM blasting trend in other joints - Tomo is the place to go! There is a small tatami style room in the front of the restaurant, with a traditional feel to it that creates an atmosphere of intimacy and serenity despite looking out onto the busy Main St of Smithtown. I took my sushi to-go today, but will have to return at another date to try some more of their rolls as well as cooked food. Tomo features a really user-friendly online ordering system for takeout or delivery - I'll have to keep that in mind the next time we're looking for somewhere to order from at work! Today, I got the: GODZILLA ROLL which was pretty damn sweet (thank you eel sauce) and the deep fried exterior gave it a delicious crunch. The FIRE ISLAND roll was a "meh" mostly because while it was SMOTHERED in tobikos, they didn't really give it any of that salty popping goodness I've come to expect from them. SPICY YELLOWTAIL was also pretty good, but somewhat forgettable, and mostly ordered just so I'd have a full stomach in the end. The nori on my rolls was somewhat chewier than I've experienced with other sushi - and it's not because I drove 30 minutes after getting it; I've left other sushi uneaten for hours without the wrapping getting so chewy - maybe they let it get too moist, but I'll be keeping an eye out for this the next time I order. Perhaps the rolls could have been wrapped a bit tighter I think too, since two of my pieces fell apart pretty quickly. I'm still very happy with the taste of everything I ordered - this is affordable sushi with fresh ingredients and friendly service. One of the best things about Tomo is that they don't close in between lunch and dinner! Perhaps next time I'll pick up a bento box or something to get some more material to fine-tune my review. The food is great, the service is THE WORST. Yesterday I called in my order at 7:25 PM and went to go and pick up at 8:10 PM. When I arrived at the restaurant there were three other people waiting in front of me and during my wait two people came in after me. I was the last person to get my order and it was 8:55 PM. They told me they forgot something in my order, nothing I ordered had to be cooked. To say I was livid is an understatement. This is actually the THIRD time this has happened to me at Tomo. The first time it happened it was a Saturday night and I was like hey! They are just busy! I'm happy that they're busy! But when I tried to let the female waitress know I was there (just to check in) she avoided eye contact with me and generally avoided the front of the restaurant. That time there was a man waiting and was approaching 80 minutes total wait time. The second time it happened, I was annoyed but still very forgiving. I am over it after this time. I love you Tomo but this is the end. It isn't me, it's you. As much as I hate the glitz of Aji53 across the street I'm going to try them again.
