The absolute must go to Sushi spot in Commack that is truly authentic, delicious, friendly, and fresh. The building looks like it could be someones house, and upon going in it really looks homey and intimate. The place was packed, every table full, and we now know why because of how good the sushi rolls were: I got a Halloween Roll which was really good, and my gf got two other rolls which she loved as well, one was a super spicy Tuna Roll. I really liked the way the inside of the restaurant looks. Very cultural and comfortable seats. Looks a bit run down outside but pretty well kept inside. Service was nice- server was attentive. Although I did notice a difference between the treatment of the table next to us and ourselves. Im going based off of observations. We were both table of 2's, came in at the same time, girls, and yet one was checked on by the owner profusely while we were ignored and we were sitting across from each other. (wondering if it's a race issue as they were both white and we were not). Who knows but this definitely crossed my mind throughout the dinner. I would hope that this is not the case. Otherwise the servers kept up with refills. Food was okay. Not the best and I mainly questioned the freshness of it all. Appetizers: -Miso Soup: I enjoyed this. It was tasty. Entrees: -Alaskan roll: (cucumber, salmon, avocado) generally enjoyable, however I couldn't help but taste the salmon and feel something was off. Not the freshest piece of salmon and the avocado was also pretty browned. -Bulgogi roll: (marinated rib eye w/korean sauce, pickled radish, spicy Mayo, jalapeño and chili sauce) I enjoyed this although again questioned if it was fresh or past due. Something about how the beef looked. Beef was not warm so it was definitely sitting in the fridge or idk where- wondering for how long. -Summer Roll: (shrimp, crab stick, cucumber, avocado, red onion, lettuce wrapped with rice paper) my friend said she enjoyed this although she did have trouble eating this with chopsticks and a fork. Almost looked like mini burritos/hand rolls if anything rather than sushi rolls. She enjoyed the sauce that came with it. My stomach was not agreeable with this meal unfortunately and I did suffer some stomach aches while trying to finish up my meal. Honestly was super impressed with the size of the rolls and the freshness. You can tell they are very authentic, the rice is super soft and fresh. I got the fireman roll, k1 roll and salmon avocado. Everything was absolutely delish. The rolls stand out to me compared to competitors due to side, freshness and authenticity. I had seen a lot of recommendations to come here so was excited to try. Fresh is the only word that matters in Japanese restaurants, and Kurofune delivered. My family and some friends came with a large group which they accommodated and which gave me the opportunity to try lots of different dishes since we ate family style. First, I liked everything that I tried, you won't be disappointed if you randomly point at the menu without reading it or get confused by the Japanese names of the menu. For appetizers, try the Spicy Edamame, you'll be surprised at the perfect balance of spice, hot enough to give a burst of flavor but not too hot to burn. The description of the Squid Salad doesn't give justice to this dish. This was one of my favorite dishes. Also try the Rising Sun. The rolls were fresh, my favorites were the Jalapeño Salmon and Halloween Roll, but really the freshness at Kurofune makes everything so much better. My youngest wasn't very adventurous, so she got the chicken teriyaki and described it as "mouthwatering". I finished with ginger ice cream. It was like eating a creamy ginger snap. You have to try it. I also got to try the Fried Ice Cream which was great! Just to wrap up my comments if you are planning a date. Parking was easy. Atmosphere was cozy, not too loud, and not eerily quiet. Chairs were designed with craftsmanship from an era before simplicity meant cheap. I really enjoyed everything even with a large group. My family and I came here tonight right after a drive home from our ski week getaway. We ordered the Sushi and Sashimi for 2 combo plus the Caribbean Roll. The combo comes with soup and salad. The food was so fresh and delicious!! It's the best it's ever been! We have been here many times in the past. Our waiter was professional, helpful and personable! We talked about Tokyo as I hope to visit there one day! He gave us great tips! Then the new owner came out and introduced herself to us. She was so nice!! We ended our meal with the fried ice cream. Wow. I couldn't understand why my son was Obsessed with Kurofune Japanese Restaurant it was delicious. We started off with the Flying Dragon Roll It's deep-fried shrimp & cucumber inside with avocado on top, definitely a different roll. Then we had the Shrimp Shumai which is a absolutely delicious dumpling. I Highly recommend it! The Teriyaki Salomon was perfectly cooked as requested & it comes with fresh broccoli & carrots We ordered a Bento box with Korean Bulgogi (loved it )it comes with California roll, Shrimp & Veggie Tempura and Sushi. You know what I hate?! I hate having my hopes up for a good meal and only to be crushed because the food/service was just meh. Enter... Kurofune. Situated in the middle of Long Island. On the near end or beginning of Commack Road depending on how you view things. I say beginning because where I'm coming from I'm usually turning on to Commack Road from Vets. Although it has updated over the years and honestly I think the last time I was here I was maybe 7 or 8? Yeah my parents were ground breakers and liked sushi in the late 80s early 90s and didn't just get into the recent hype of said sushi. Both my parents recall taking me and I'd stab Cheerios with the chopsticks when I was really little. Anyway... enough of me rambling about my past here's the scoop. My dad wanted to come here to come back to our old roots since it's been years since we've been. He looks on his TripAdvisor I look on my Yelp. We both concur that it still appears to be good so off we go. Unfortunately... in mine and my mom's opinion it wasn't that great. Aji 53 & Kotobuki blow this place right outta the water. I really don't mean to be biased but Kurofune is not #1 in my book. Maybe we're just too fussy with Sushi and that's why they don't even come near the number 1 & 2 spot. But keyword is MAYBE. Anyway... we ordered the following: - Oyster Yaki: Okay... so maybe they are trying to copy Kotobuki's hype of fried oysters and honestly they were just weak in comparison. No disrespect but just weak. The last Oyster I consumed was incredibly fishy. Blech gross! - Tuna Carpaccio: WoW! Me thinks Kurofune is really going trying to copy Kotobuki. Usually at Kotobuki I down my water or finish my glass of wine before I finish eating this at Kotobuki. Honestly. Again this was straight weak. Not enough zip... just boring. - Beef Negamaki: My dad ordered this. He said it was "OK." Unfortunately I cannot vouch for the "OK" rating from my dad since I didn't have a piece. - Lobster Salad Roll: So honestly... for my mom and I? This was the best thing we ate here. This is a solid roll. - Crab Roll: My dad ordered this as well. He seemed to like it? But I wasn't about to ask my dad what he thinks of the experience we had at Kurofune whilst sitting in Kurofune. The service was mediocre at best in my opinion. They were rather slow and not quick to fill up the water. Will I be back? No I'm sorry I don't plan on it. Do I recommend coming here? No you're better off hitting up Aji 53 or Kotobuki. Sorry Kurofune. read more

Of all the (many) places in the area, I find that the quality of both fish and rice is by far the best at Kurofune. While at most local places ordering the chirashi means getting 3 pieces each of salmon, yellowtail, tuna, plus maybe the cheap stuff like escolar, Kurofune's chirashi has a far superior variety of fish for the same price. Their attention to detail shows in things like their homemade tamago. Their house dressing is unique and delicious. Even their avocado rolls knock the others in the area out of the park. read more
