OM NOM NOM!! My new favorite place to get tamales!!! Or should i say cart! It's a cart in front of a liquor store. I came here and got 2 beef,2 chicken, 2 pork(green), 2 jalapeño & cheese! They were $2 each but some how my total ended up to be $18 hmmm did she pocket $2 extra from me? Well if she did, it's totally fine because her tamales were BOOOOOOMB diggitty bomb! The masa was even flavored which made the tamales taste so much better!

Some places I yelp I've only been to a handful of times. I've eaten about a million tamales from this particular stand. Because location is everything. The fact of the matter is that her tamales are pretty good, but not outstanding. Heavy on the masa, light on the salsa. Now that a more convenient and arguably superior competitor has opened across the street, my loyalty has been severely challenged. But I still like coming here, and the main reason is because one of the saleswomen is *always* snoozing on her chair by the cart. I don't know if she's just tired from tamale-making all day. But I wake her up as gently as possible, and she sheepishly smiles and looks blankly at me before mumbling something incoherent, presumably in Spanish. Even when she's awake, she's a little bit asleep. I get my meat tamales (don't order the pineapple here, they are pretty weak) and she retreats to her chair. So help a poor, sleepy Mexican woman out, alright?

Girthy. Is that even a word? =P

El jefe was on the hunt for tamales that tastes like his mom's. Our adventure led us to Tamales El Mexico. $2 tamales? Sure! Why not? The tamales are cheap, fat and filling. I ordered the beef, pork and jalapeno and cheese. The beef and jalapeno cheese were good. The pork was alright, although plain. The masa was well flavored and moist. And, did I say that the tamales were fat? I typically can eat about 3-4 tamales, in one sitting. But, these tamales were fairly big and I was stuffed after eating two. The only downside to ordering here is that you can't tell which tamale is what, if you order a variety. The tamales aren't labelled. El jefe got 4, but one of them was a "candy" tamale that he didn't even order. So, there is some guessing going on, by both the cart lady and the customer. They weren't exactly my favorite Mexican grandma's tamales. But, if you want to eat cheap, under $5 and are craving decent tamales, this is it. Be sure to bring cash.

Tamales were great. Not only was the protein inside the tamale good but the maza itself was delicious. Give it a try.

Tapas style menu, we were a party of 4 and ordered: Squash blossom Relleno - it's the flower part of a squash plant and stuffed with mushroom duxelles which resembles a meat mixture with squash succotash. Outside is a corn tempura with a tomato base sauce. Pulpo-grilled octopus, one of the best texture and perfectly grilled skin with a chewy yet soft interior. The sauce has a slight kick and crunch from the corn nuts. Crab corn doughnut- this is their specialty and we were about to skip out but glad we didn't. The brioche bun had a donut batter with lumps of crab salad and corn mixture on top. El Festin- perfect for our party of 4 because it was a platter full of 4 Cheese quesadilla, 4 shrimp, 4 chicken slices, 1 jalapeño bacon wrap, ribeye. Flan-we should have each ordered one ourselves! Great flavors and texture, the top had ancient chocolate soil and had crispy corn nuts. Different but yummy. Overall, delicious food that came out so quick, great ambiance, we celebrated our birthdays and were each gifted candles with our names on the label. Truly amazing from beginning to end. We opted to get the paella for 2 which takes a little extra time to prepare but was well worth the wait. It was so flavorful with all the seafood being a nice touch of salt. It was a little spicy but the cream sauce balanced it well. The rice was fluffy but crispy on the bottom. It could've fed 4 people probably. We got a complimentary slice of strawberry tres leches and it was the perfect ending to our meal. So incredibly light and not too sweet. Our server, Abdo made our dining experience even better with his friendliness and attention to the fact that we were celebrating something. The chorizo wasn't like Roberto's so there was no grease dripping down my hands. That usually means either too much eggs or better quality meat. I think it was the latter. We left right away to pick up the food and sure enough it was ready waiting for our arrival. One quick drive back home to dig in and the aroma was so enticing. California Burritos is very apt for their name, my bf rates it a 10/10. As a California Burrito connoisseur, he liked the addition of sour cream in it and said the flavors were delicious. He topped it with their green salsa for a little bit of a freshness to cut through the richness and fattiness of the meat and fries in the burrito. He didn't care for the fish taco that much and rated it a 4/10 but said the restaurant overall was a 10/10, as he thought there was too much lettuce and tomato throwing off the ratio of the taco. I, on the other hand, am a huge fan of veggies and liked the ample amount they provided. ---- There's a couple benches outside in front of the shop and seating at booth tables inside as well. It's a bit smaller to sit inside, I recommend sitting outside to enjoy the fresh air and the sunset is beautiful. ---- Overall: if you're in the mood for California Burritos come to the place rightly named California Burritos!
