As I walked up to the store, I noticed a parking lot nearby so I would try that first. Otherwise, street parking is slim. There were two people in front and two behind me. I asked a woman if she had been there before but she didn't understand much English. I hesitated for a bit and then just went for it: "Cuantas tortillas in el chico?" She gestured a size with her hands which made me so happy that my poor Spanish skills passed the test. The sign i indicated that were media and grande sizes as well. I think my small bag had about 25 tortillas for a minuscule $2.15, cash only. These tortillas were better than any other corn tortilla I've purchased from the supermarket. They were soft without breaking apart. However, they didn't have that chewy texture that some restaurant handmade tortillas have. And, the ones here were very uniform in size. What a lovely place with the best corn tortillas I've ever had! I happened to stop by at Ly Heng, a Cambodian eatery a few blocks away, and saw Tortilleria Lily on the way there. Apparently they have tamales during the holiday season, but unfortunately, they were already sold out by carnitas tamales by 1 PM! I'll have to go back. As for the tortillas... you really cannot beat the price here. About 2.5 pounds for $2. You get them warm and they smell heavenly. You will never want to get corn tortillas from any old regular schmegular supermarket again. They are pretty warm and moist so I would let out the steam from the bag, separate them, and select some to keep in the fridge and some for the freezer. read more

I just recently discovered Tortilleria Lily and I love these tortillas! Every tortilla is nice and thin with the quality is consistent with each uniform tortilla. They taste great too. For me, I prefer flour but I will definitely be trying the corn soon. I am not sure if they use lard or veg oil, but whatever they're doing- they're doing it right! I am a huge Mex food fan, but it has to be authentic and true to it's origins. So glad this tortilleria is only be a few miles from my house. Also, they are open in the mornings on Wednesdays. I rarely give 5 stars for anything, so that's why I'm only giving four. I would have to be blown away to give some place 5. With that being said, let me assure you this place is good. Now as a Chicano it only makes sense that I review this place, especially since my tag line is "Chicano San Diego". Most San Diegans wouldn't get this, because it's a Latino thing or more specifically an indigenous thing. You see, Native people (this includes Mexicans) have been eating corn for over 500 years, actually closer to thousands of years. You could say we invented corn and actually we did. During the evolution of human beings there is one great measurement of advancement and one of those is the cultivation of food. Well when Mayan people manipulated the corn plant we domesticated it for consumption and have been eating it ever since. So let's just say corn is central to our diet and culture. If you grew up in Latin America you will know, you can go down the block to get fresh made tortillas on a daily basis. Welcome to City Heights where there are lots of Latinos, but mostly Mexicans and Chicanos/as. So if you want to keep it real, get yourself some fresh made tortillas, but only buy what you need, cuz tortillas are meant to be eaten fresh with no preservatives or other man made chemicals. It may mean you will have to make a trip to Tortilleria Lily's every time you need corn tortillas, but some things are best the way they were originally, that's tradition. Now if we could just tear up the parking lot and plant some corn that would be OG, but then where would people park their trokas (spanglish for big ass truck with Sinaloa stickers on the back window). Best tortillas in the USA! Been coming here for tortis since I was a kid, and being Mexican, I know what good tortillas should taste like! These are it! The only thing comparable is mom's and grandma's stuff - but that would be south of the border! RECOMMENDATION: Buy fresh; let them cool down, then separate them once cool. Put a stack of whatever you want to use in the fridge, and the rest in the freezer (for future use, as needed). Or make small stacks, put in ziplocks and freeze. This review is for the carnitas! If you are ever in the mood for carnitas, and are a morning person, definitely stop by here to pick up the best carnitas you will ever have! They are not a restaurant, they sell carnitas on the weekends only. They make one batch of carnitas for Saturday morning and another for Sunday morning, that's it. I've gone in at 8am before and not been able to buy them because they have sold out. I try to come in before 6:30am, just to make sure I get some because it IS that serious! The salsa they give you with the carnitas is pure amazingness. They won't give you extra, not even if you offer to pay for them. It is strictly 2 salsas per 1lb of carnitas. Recommendation: Go in early to purchase carnitas and a small bag of tortillas. The tortillas from here are not as good when you reheat them, so I try not to have left-overs. Have some limes ready at home and enjoy! They do sell the small cans of "Herdez Salsa Casera" which I like to buy and mix with their salsa to make it last a little longer=] read more

They were under cooked & doughy & didn't have enough salt, basically tasteless. I'm from Tucson & I brought tortillas with me but my family ate those right up so I needed more. I live in Los Angeles and I have had my tortillas from Tortilleria Lili "imported" from SD every time I run out of them. I freeze them and keep them very secretly because everyone wants them!!!
