First of all, it's BYOB. We didn't know this before going, but it's good to know! What a strange night it was at Tamarind. The restaurant is this little box of a place that is completely shut in by curtains. It kind of looks like a refurbished waffle-house on the outside. Oh, Ithaca. First of all, the food was pretty decent. The tom yum soup was very good, as was the panang curry and the massaman curry. Good stuff. In Rochester, this would be a 4 star Thai place, but Ithaca has some better options in the Thai-department. The waitstaff was OK. They were having trouble with their credit card machines the night that we were there, so service was very slow. But at least they were apologetic. Their food is beyond great for sure, and the prices are pretty cheap compared to other restaurants. Besides the waitress or manager whose name is Nunu (I'm not sure if I spelled it right..) always takes good care of customers. This is My favorite restaurant in Ithaca, and likely the best thai spot. The food is always excellent, hot, fresh, and flavorful. My favorite is the pad ce ew with chicken. I always have to get the spring rolls as an appetizer, they are phenomenal. I've also had the calamari appetizer which is excellent. The service is always excellent if you get Nunu. She is kind and attentive, and always remembers us when we come in. We have had some less than attentive service a few times but, I feel that the wait is definitely worth the delicious food. read more

I used to eat at Tamarind frequently and the food was delicious. I ordered take out for the first tie in probably 2 yrs. Wow. What a disappointment. Spring rolls--The rolls were burnt. The filling tasted like sour dishwater. The oil was obviously rancid that they were fried in. I threw them out. Chicken Satay-- Peanut sauce was OK but the chicken was absolutely tasteless. Edible but not great. Tom Yum Soup: OK. Passable. Too bad. This used to be my favorite Thai restaurant but I will not be eating here again. read more

We have ordered here before and noticed portions are getting smaller. This last week I ordered $70 worth of food and both our steak Fried Rice containers were less than 1/2 full. I called to tell them about it and the woman answearing the phone, which may be the owner or manager not sure, basically called me a liar (and I took pictures to prove it but she did't care). She did n';t offer anything other than next time we order to tell them to make sure to put enough food in the container.....really? I need to tell someone not to short me food!? Absolutely unprofessional and quality of food had went down as well, mushy rice. In this age when we are trying to patronize local businesses they shouldn't; be shorting their customers then make it sound like we're lying. Why would I go to the trouble to call? A horrible experience I'l be sure to tell everyone about and never eat there again. I hope your sale was worth a lost customer family. Taste of Thai is always exceptional and never has these issues. Great experience at tamarind. Walked in at 830 on a Saturday night and was seated immediately. Appetizers and dinner were served quickly. Everything tasted amazing! We recommend the massaman curry(sweet creamy flavor) and the pad see ew, and the Thai BBq chicken. read more

We have eaten at Tamarind several times and continue to go back for quality, freshness, simple satisfying offerings and price. Their coconutty soup with curry is a favorite among us along with the Pad Thai. We love their curry regardless of color (green, red or yellow) and are trying something new every visit. Came here for dinner with friends. Food - 5 Very good food. Now i only tried one dish (bulgogi) and my friends had a dish each, so i can't vouch for everything. However, everything we ordered was delicious. Atmosphere - 4 The place doesn't look special from the outside, but it has a nice homey vibe inside. Nothing really special, but a good feel. Service - 5 Overall, very good service. Water was refilled. Food came quickly. Orders were taken on time. Value - 3.5 So far this has been the best Thai place in Ithaca for me. Definitely really like this place. When I first went it looked like a little house so I was confused but inside it looks like a full very homey restaurant. It seems had a new construction before I visit last time, so looks pretty good. The foods are tasty as well, but a little too salty.

The food and service are terrible. The papaya salad smells of rotten, stale and unhealthy vegetables. The first waitress could not understand plain and simple English words like "stale" and "unhealthy". The second waitress took the papaya salad back to the kitchen and just brought it back saying that there's nothing wrong with it, even though we both could smell something unhealthy in it. It caused an upset stomach the next day. The service is so horrible that I got a bland, barely level 2 spiciness curry when I had ordered level 5 spiciness- and the waitress didn't even accept that it was a wrong level of spiciness. I think the cook or the owner has changed recently because nothing tasted right, and we have had good dinners before at this place. Definitely not recommended for the future at all. Go to Saigon Kitchen or Taste of Thai or Sticky rice - they are much better. read more

The food at Tamarind Thai is excellent, especially the pad Se ew. It's hard to go and not get it each time! I've also had the chicken fried rice which had great flavor and a nice portion size. I've had the Yakisoba as well but next time I would get it without the bamboo shoots. I guess if you enjoy the flavor of bamboo then it would work for you though. The spring rolls are a terrific appetizer. Crispy and sweet. Often when we go we get our favorite server, Nunu. She is excellent; attentive and sweet. Other times we have went though and got other servers, the service was not as great. They were nice enough but didn't ask about spiciness and didn't really come back after dropping the food. Tamarind is definitely worth trying if you want a delicious Thai meal that is reasonably priced. Don't forget to get a Thai iced tea with your meal, amazing! read more

Pad see ew with tofu was excellent, my friends add pad oration with scrimp and massaman curry with chicken and loved it. We did take out but I have eaten in several times, service is always excellent and the place is not noisy even when crowded. read more

This is the third time I've been here in the last couple months. The place has gone down pretty badly. I speak fluent Thai; was born and raised there, yet they couldn't get my order right. I tried ordering the duck over rice. They didn't have any duck in, in spite of duck being the special that day. I changed my order to the Hainan chicken. It came with rice that was obviously from the bottom of the pot and the chicken with parts of it still attached to the tendons. I couldn't eat it and sent it back. I told them I would take a bowl of noodles instead, they brought out BBQ pork with rice. I was hungry by this time so just ate it and am now writing this review. Stay clear of this place. If it's the same owner, shame on them. If its a new owner, which I suspect, they are a poor change. read more

The mango chicken is good and I normally do order for delivery. I just called them to place an order and I can safely say that I was very very cordial. I ordered the mango chicken and a bottle of water (this usually adds up to $12 and thus sufficient for delivery) however the man on the phone insisted that my bill had only come up to $10.45. I asked him what else I needed to order to have dinner delivered and he replied "Im sorry you can calculate that, I don't know" and proceeded to hang up. Good Thai food. We got the Pad Thai noodles, Red Curry, Spicy Basil. All of them were very good. Red Curry slightly on the creamer side due to the coconut milk I assume. Other than the calorie aspect this added to the taste. Tom Yum soup also came out very well - ask for level 2; we asked for 3 & was slightly hotter than expected. I stopped by after went to Booksales on Sunday in May for lunch. I had Basil beef +5 star spicy, it served with rice and it was great and tasty. The server was look like Asian Lady. Absolutely careless in delivery. They are very sloppy in communication and have a hard time delivering at a due schedule of an hour. This has happened to me three times now. There are many Thai restaurants in Ithaca, this one is alright. The food is usually ok, although there are some days where the kitchen really messes up and you get oil instead of stew/sauce and uncooked dough for "breads-based appetizer". But, the worse part is the delivery. It seems like the owner is not hiring drivers because I have ordered here many times and it always takes 1hr (best cases scenario) to 2hrs (typical time). They will warn you over the phone and say between 1-1:30hr, trust me it is more like 2plus. Another note, for dishes that come with Rice, expect 2 table spoons of rice unless you are wiling to pay an extra $1 for the "large rice size" which is still a one person dinner portion. I don't think I will order from them again. (the staff is nice though, management seems to be the issue) read more

Food is very good. But I have been there twice in the last year and both times one person in my party didn't get served their food. First time they didn't have the order and she got it 20 minutes after everyone else. Last time two weeks ago they served it ten minutes after everyone else. I ordered $56 worth of food there with three curry dishes and they did not include the rice. I called when I got home and the manager said he would have the rice delivered, and offered no apology. 65 minutes later I called and he told me it would not be delivered so I was left with three curry dishes and no rice. This is by far the best Thai food in Ithaca. The only reason I'm giving it four stars instead of five is because the Pad Priew Wan I usually order has been inconsistent in terms of which ingredients are used. I -hate- mushrooms, and the first three times I ordered the dish it had no mushrooms. The fourth time it did, and when I inquired about them I was told it must have been a mistake. Fifth time - no mushrooms, so I figured I was all set. But then the most recent time it had mushrooms again as well as two additional vegetables that have never been in the dish before. Weird.
