Decided to give this place a try on my lunch/dinner break after seeing nothing but positive reviews on Google and I'm glad I did! I've been coming down Rt. 1 for at least 10 years and I don't know how I've missed this place! I ordered the shredded chicken burrito and decided to call it in so that it would be ready when I arrived. When I walked into Tampico Grill I was greeted by a young lady at the register, I could tell she was in the middle of something but she assured me she'd be with me in a moment...I really admired this, most places you go to nowadays the staff walks past you like you're not even there. As I waited for her to finish up I noticed families sitting in the dining area, a very casual dining experience everyone seemed to be enjoying themselves. Now back to this burrito...my food was packed in a foil tin, which I liked because as I write this review (30 mins after getting settled back at work) my food is STILL warm! My burrito was HUGE and jam packed with moist seasoned shredded chicken, cheese, black beans, onions, peppers, and tomatoes. It was topped with more cheese and if you wanted, sauce (I opted out of this). It was served with a side of rice, lettuce, sour cream, and guacamole. Everything was seasoned PERFECTLY. This is the best Mexican food I've had on the east coast. So much better than the usual franchise food. We've tried many of the entrees and they've all been great. You get to choose which sauce you want them cooked in (my favorites are the chipotle and green sauce). Good chips and salsa as well. Tasty margaritas and friendly service too. read more

if I could rate this place less than 1 star, I would! I placed an order over the phone for pickup and when ordering explained to the female taking the order that I wanted 2 pitchers of margaritas WITHOUT ICE. She confirmed they would be as ordered. When picking up the order. The margaritas had ice in them. Which at that time I had asked the waitress if she could have them correct the error. She quickly asked the bartender to fix the problem and he came over to us and asked if it would be ok if he "strained" the ice out. At this time, the margaritas had been sitting on the takeout counter for at least 15 minutes and the ice had melted quite a bit so I told him that I preferred that he didn't. Which is when he told "That's what he was going to do anyway." Of course I wasn't happy about that and said to him that I had specifically asked when ordering that I wanted them without ice. He got irate and said "are you really going to do this to me right now?" So I replied, YES, I am, I ordered them without ice and expect to get what I asked for. At this time he got really nasty and started talking to me like it was my fault for the mixup. Even the waitress tried to tell him that we had ordered them without ice. So seeing this was going nowhere, I asked him if I could speak with the manager. He replied "I am the manager." As if it was going to scare me or something. This didn't help matters and angered me even more than I was already. So I told him in a firm voice "Just do what was asked and make them again because I didn't order them with ice and don't want a pitcher of water. While all of this is happening, the place is very busy and the other person waiting with me started saying that they think he is going to do something foul to the margaritas because of his attitude. Other people present even said the same that were waiting for their orders. When he came back, he handed us the margaritas and specifically told us to "Never come back again!" Really? Is that what a manager says to his patrons? "NEVER COME BACK AGAIN!" I have been there multiple times and have spent hundreds of dollars on food there. Plus this order was another $55 being spent there. So, the moral of the story is, I am going to do as he said and NEVER GO BACK! If they were the last Tex-Mex restaurant on the planet, I would learn to cook that style of food. I refuse to go back to there for ANY REASON! Even if they offered free food I would go elsewhere. I can't believe that this all happened because I asked for NO ICE in a drink! read more

* I got a Groupon for here. We ate there on a Friday night. I got the El President. The food was pretty bad. The Enrichetta was small and had little taste. The Tamale was dry and stuck together. The Chicken Taco was like eating little squares of rubber. It was not very hot at all. The beans look like pork and beans. Not the dark pintos beans or re-fried bean you usually get. The cheese sauce was not very good either. The service was fine, and the Margarita was great but way too small. WOW! Great food! I'm a Frequent Tampico customer. I have been going to here for 10 yrs and never been disappointed!!! Great steak and beef in tacos and fajitas, seasoning is simple and wonderful! Very authentic type of place not fancy yet simple and clean restaurant is great for me since they have awesome food I don't care what the place looks like!! Small family owns restaurant and has been using the fam recipes from great great great grandmother SO cool!! They have cheap margaritas @ $5!!! And the FLAN is to die for!!! Never going back. Tonight was maybe the fourth time I've been to Tampico Grill and there's only one time I can think of that the service wasn't absolutely atrocious. I should've taken the hint earlier (I know) but to their credit the food is good and the prices are decent so hey, nobody's perfect right? This evening me and my fiancé were one of five tables (no large parties) and ended up sitting there for FORTY minutes before getting up and walking out. Quite literally another couple walked in, got seated AND served while we waited. The guy bussing tables (same guy who seated us) probably walked past us three times and didn't even look our way. My advice? Save yourself some aggravation and just go Mango's Grill (less than two miles away also on route 1). They're superior to Tampico in every way and you won't be stuck waiting hoping that someone will eventually care enough to treat you like a paying customer. read more

Nestled in the heart of Laurel, Md. It had been quite a few years since I had been to Tampico Grill. Don't recall what I had the last time there but, now I remember why I have not been back in so long. The free chips and salsa are nice but, the rest of the food was mediocre. I ordered a plate of Chicken Enchiladas with rice/beans and a side of Mole Sauce. Chicken inside was decent but the tortillas tasted microwaved. The Mole did not taste like what Mole should taste like, it was way too sweet. Would recommend not ordering it. Rice and beans were alright. Tampico's is our restaurant of choice for every meal we don't cook at home. We feel as though we're going over to a friend's house for dinner. The staff there is warm, welcoming and accomodating and the food is incredible. Whether you're getting beef (or more aptly - steak), chicken, or even portabello mushrooms, the seasoning is sublime. The portions are ample and the prices are excellent. As mentioned elsewhere the margaritas are good, but whatever the beverage - the food is the star. I was doing some work in Laurel and referred to my trusty Yelp iPhone app to find someplace good for lunch. I came across Tampico which was close by and had great reviews, so off I went! As some of the other reviewers have mentioned, the location looks like an old diner, so if you're not paying attention you may not notice it. The parking lot was kind of full when I arrived, so I was very surprised to find only a couple of tables filled when I got inside. I was seated relatively quickly, and my drink, chips and salsa were soon brought to the table. The chips were nice and fresh, not too greasy, but could have used a little more salt. The salsa was very good.....nice chunks of tomato, peppers, and onions and dark enough to have some heat to it without melting my tongue. I ordered some enchiladas and was surprised to learn they have six different sauces to choose from for them.....pretty cool! I decided on the ranchero sauce, and sat back with my book to wait while I listened to another patron's expletive laced rant about one of her co-workers. (Whoever Latonya is, she might want to be careful getting into her car after work, that's all I'm gonna say about that!) My enchiladas were a bit disappointing.....the ranchero sauce was too sweet, and there was entirely too much onion in the enchiladas. But the black beans and rice were good, so I'm hoping that their other menu items are better. I don't know if I'll go back to find out, but my advice to anyone else is to NOT get the enchiladas, and if you do, stay away from the ranchero sauce. We came in on a weeknight around 6 and the first thing in my mind was a margarita. I ordered a strawberry blended and it was decent. Nothing to write home about. The place isn't the cleanest place on earth and the decor looks very shabby. I ignore all signs not to continue but did anyway. I ordered tacos, one steak one shrimp. The steak was well seasoned, way overlooked and the shrimp was pretty non existent. In fact, it was cut up into small chunks like I couldn't handle the whole damn shrimp. Come on dude! The "sauces" used were beyond bland. My friend ordered the chicken chimi (one of my fav Mexican dishes) and the outside wasn't even crispy. A chimi is deep fried people! I ordered the Veggie Burrito and it was both huge and delicious. I had to take half of it home. Wait staff was friendly and attentive to providing a good service. The party I was with ordered the Tilapia Taco which was served with rice and black beans. It was of a good size, but the taco had sautéed onions on it. Our experiences had been fish tacos served with a cabbage slaw, so the sautéed onions came as bit of a surprise. Neither of us would order this again, but overall, the food portions were nicely sized and presentation was OK. I think this part of the review is just as critical as the above and it is in relation to the tip applied to the bill. The other party and split the bill and we both were to leave a $2.00 tip, but I miss calculate and left a $4.00 tip on my portion of the $10.00 food bill. The bank caught it on my credit card bill and flagged it stating "the food and service must of been good to leave a 40% tip." Of course it got my attention and when I looked into it I realized what I had done. I called Tampico Grill, spoke with the Manager and $2.00 was refunded to my credit card bill. While it was only $2.00, it was the principle of the error and honestly of the Manager to recognize that 40% tip was "over the top when 20% is the norm. For that, I say hats off for their understanding of tipping practices and correcting a customer's mistake. read more

Food was excellent service was great but when I got home and read the receipt I found that we were charged for an item we didn't order,Queso dip when it was brought to the table we were told it was part of the sampler we ordered yet it wasn't listed on the menu as part of the sampler and it wasn't that good either after closer inspection of the bill it was listed as a separate charge of $6.25 well they got us on that one pay close attention to the charges on your receipt I won't let this stop me from going back and I will let them know about it when I do read more

This places gives the the CHEERS feel. Everyone knew the bartenders name. I think it was Drew. He was so nice and attentive. The whole bar area was kinda full and he helped all the tables and bar without missing a beat. I will be back! The margaritas were amazing and so were the fajitas! Drew told us the only specials outside of happy hour are on Tuesday's and Sunday's when the fajita specials run. Honestly, this place is a jewel. A couple of steps up from a dive bar because people are actually nice and inviting. It's good food at an affordable price with good service. For years a few of our friends often brag about this place, my wife and I finally decided to try it. We came in for lunch, we were seated immediately. The menu looked good, we were served complimentary chips n salsa as just about all Mexican restaurant's do now. The chips were good, thin and crispy and served warm. The salsa was ok, my wife makes much better homeade salsa. I ordered 3 ground beef tacos served with beans n rice. The tacos were lacking seasoning and flavor and was more of a shredded beef that ground beef. The rice tasted like boxed and the red beans were ok but also lacked flavor. My wife ordered the chimichanga also served with beans and rice. My wife shares the same option of the salsa, beans and rice as I do. She said her chimichanga also lacked flavor and was soggy. Great food and customer service! Sometimes the service can be a little slow but it is so worth it. My husband and I come here often during the week and have always been impressed. We've had the sampler appetizer, salsa, burritos, fajitas, salad, steak (don't remember the Spanish name of that entree) and the chimichanga and everything has been delicious! I have also ordered margaritas here before. The strawberry margarita is ok. I've also had a regular lime margarita. It was really strong and nothing special. Although Tampico Grill is called TexMex, it is in my opinion more of a traditional Mexican eatery since ground beef options are not prevalent on the menu and can be requested in some instances. This is your standard Mexican quisine with no frills. The one item they do have us coming back for is the Tampico wings. They are a unique flavor of spices and grilled or charred to seal in the flavor. Two other items that I enjoy are the nachos, which are loaded with pico, meat and the works, as well as the Tampico burger. It is nicely grilled and I have had it a few times. I usually will pick up orders to go. Dining in on the weekend before additional staff arrives at lunch time can add some time to your wait as our waiter was also working the food line, and register the few times we visited during weekend lunch. If you are in the area and have the taste for Mexican food, it is worth the visit, especially the wings. read more

I usually love , love, love this place but am now freaked out- one cook no mask, one had it under his chin the third ha it on but not covering his nose- one of the girls had hers under her nose- only one with proper mask wearing. I know it's a pain, and uncomfortable- but I wear one 15 hours a day. (Healthcare) COVID is serious and if you want us to support your business you need to make patrons feel comfortable.
