This place had so many good reviews that we wanted to try some Indian when we were on our vacation at Carlsbad. It was Sunday afternoon and when we entered there were hardly few people and that should have given us a sneak peak about the place. We ordered quite a lot of food since we were a group of 14 people. There was just one server who was managing all tables. The food took forever to arrive. We had ordered naan, aloo paratha, tandoori chicken, chicken 65 goat biryani, chicken biryani, chicken curry. The naan and aloo paratha were the only good ones. Biryani didn't have flavor and was very disappointing to say the least. We were Very unhappy with the food, service and quality. The only thing we liked was the pistachio ice-cream which was delicious. Overall slow service, no coordination between the server and chef, food not that good, not worth the money. I was hopeful. I wanted the new owners to be successful. I told the server that this was my first time here since the 80s! We live close and we're looking for our new dinner spot. He didn't seem to care, or try to help us decide to be regulars. The food is good, but the service was simply, well, bad. We were in no rush, and chatting away with friends, but once our food arrived, we never saw the server again. We were 1 of 3 tables, then we watched the dining room fill up and empty, our table the only one left. We had to flag someone down for dessert options. Starters: Vegetable Samosas, 5/5 stars I could eat nothing but the samosas and Id be extraordinarily happy. The sauce served with them, each spicy, savory, and sweet, are so good to mix and match. Samosas are known to be heavy, but dang it all are they easy to indulge in! Naan Basket, 5/5 stars Freshly prepared, you get plain, cheese-filled, and garlic... each are delicious! Yes, I spread some of the samosa sauce on them for good measure! We were lucky enough to visit soon after they opened! First, let me say the price (and portions!) for their M-F lunch meals are AMAZING. $10.99 for a soup, salad, 2 entrees + rice/naan!? Awesome. Before I get to the food, I have to mention that the service and the servers were friendly, kind, and attentive. I appreciated the fact that the server paused taking the order to go put our appetizers into the system so we wouldn't have to wait long! Definitely have to also mention that since it was their first "working" day after opening, they gave us tea/dessert on the house! Very thoughtful and very sweet. Definitely have secured repeat customers in us! With regards to the food, I have to admit that the Gobi Manchurian is probably the best I've had since I last visited India. Yes, it was slightly more tomato-y than Indo-Chinese, but the crispiness was PERFECT. All of the entrees were spiced perfectly (they have choices of mild/medium/spicy/very spicy), and were true to description of spice level. The lentil soup was the right consistency, and was salted perfectly. The salad was just a few cucumbers, onions, and tomatoes on top of the rice along with the entrees, but it was fresh. The naan was made fresh - you can tell because I took my leftovers home and it didn't harden overnight, and was enjoyable even a day later! The dessert (mango curd) was delicious - but since I am allergic to nuts, I would've preferred them to leave the nuts off (wasn't noted that there'd be nuts on it). But the coconut shavings on it were delicious. The mango curd itself was thick and creamy and had the perfect sweetness. A definite improvement over the previous Indian restaurant here, Tandoori Palace has tried to offer a variety of authentic dishes with a greater favoritism towards northern Indian cuisine. Lahori fish and Kashmir pulao, for example, are two regional dishes you don't often see elsewhere (I believe the owners are Punjabi). As it is located in a pricey part of San Diego county, expect to pay around $15 for vegetarian entrees and $16-20 for meat ones. Given the rent they are probably paying, I can understand the costs. But compare this to similar (and often better) Indian restaurants in less expensive areas of SD and one really hopes for a cut something beyond common fare. That said, Tandoori Palace is a mixed bag. To put it simply, the food is uneven. Sometimes the ingredients are well prepared, the flavors are perfect, and the texture of the biryani and naan is great. The malai kebab and chicken tikka definitely taste like they've been in a tandoor. The one time I have ordered a mango lassi, I was favorably impressed. At other times, however, it seems as if the cooks are phoning it in. The sauces are too heavy. The chicken and lamb are frequently overcooked--especially in the rogan josh dish, which is a personal favorite. Sometimes the naan is simply brittle and bland rather than chewy and a bit tangy (naan is one of the few flatbreads that has yeast in it). It has also not escaped notice that in many meat dishes, the actual portions of meat are sometimes quite Spartan. What is of greatest concern is that this unevenness of production seems to be getting worse. Our last two orders from Tandoori Palace were sadly disappointing. I am still giving them three stars, but should I experience another subpar meal the next time I go, I am afraid this particular restaurant is on an irrevocable slide down. I hate to give restaurants bad reviews, because I know how hard the restaurant industry is, but unfortunately I feel compelled to write a review. We've eaten here many times, but today's experience will be the last. It started off with my husband ordering a chicken tikka kebab. This is their only tandoori chicken dish that offers breast meat. I ordered Matter Paneer, and the rack of lamb. The paneer matter came out, and it was full of cream. It is normally more of a curry and tomato base, with perhaps just a small amount of cream. Ok, no big deal. The lamb came out, and it was delicious, until I asked for more lemon wedges and a woman brought them out in her bare hand, and dumped them directly on my lamb! Wow! But then the chicken tandoori came out, and the chicken was stringy, dry, and rubbery. My husband asked me to taste it, and it was so inedible, I didn't finish eating even one tiny bite. There was a huge lump of fat. We complained and we could hear the chef shouting about it from the kitchen. We asked for it to be replaced with the chicken vindaloo, which we've had many a time. Every time we've had it in the past it's had a robust, dark brown sauce. As in photos in Yelp. Today it was literally bright red, and completely flavourless and watery. The chicken was equally rubbery, etc as it was in the kebab dish. I asked if they had a new cook, and we were told it was not a new cook. A man (who had just arrived at the restaurant) came and asked how everything was. We told him what had happened, and our impressions of the chicken. The dish remained uneaten. He ignored the full dish, and our comments, and in the middle of me still eating, asked if he could bring us boxes, and if we wanted to order dessert. Seriously? Why the rush?? There was no attempt to correct the disastrous experience at all. We received the bill for everything we had ordered, including the inedible chicken, paid and left, to never return. Came here for fathers day! It was a last minute decision because the place we wanted to go to wasn't available. But Tandoori Palace did not disappoint. Ambiance was nice and causal. Wait staff was very friendly and accommodating and they all wore masks which I appreciated. Masala Fries weren't on the menu but they were nice and crispy. The samosas were very well spiced and tasty. The entrees were where the restaurant truly shines. We ordered three different curry masalas and unlike most restaurants they all had distinct flavors. The Navrattan Korma had all the creamy textures we wanted with the nice added surprise of paneer (usually not in this dish) My favorite was the Tikka Masala, something I don't often crave and today their Tikka Masala satisfied that craving! Only knock I would say would be: the naan was a bit underwhelming, it may have been undercooked but it didn't rise like a normal naan. I've spent months trying to find a good curry spot in San Diego and this is by far the best one yet ! Only my first time trying it and their Chicken Tikka Masala was delicious ! Perfectly thick and flavorful curry and the chicken pulled apart easily. The naan was also nice and thin. Other places I've tried are world curry in PB, Taste of the Himalayas in La Jolla, and Tandoori Express in Rancho Bernardo and all are places I wouldn't go to again. I get that most people that like Indian food LOVE when it's spicy. Me? Not so much. I'm Wimpy McWimp and can't stand any spice in my food...yet LOVE that flavors of a good tikka masala. Yes...a dilemma. For Friday night dinner, i really craved Indian food and saw that this place had the rare distinction of still having 5 stars with over 100 reviews. It was like Christmas all over again in January! I saw another review saying to get the cheese naan and it didn't disappoint. Was definitely fresh and so tasty, i could have eaten that alone. I asked specifically in the direction for everything to be mild with no spiciness. The tandoori chicken did have a little bit of spice, but if it's at a level that i can handle being as wimpy as i am, that's still good. The chicken tikka masala was dream like. The perfect tangy taste of tikka masala sauce, but seriously....NO spiciness whatsoever. Perfection for me. I'm sure they can make it as spicy as you like, but for someone like me, i was so grateful to see that they cared about me as a customer to do their best to honor my request. The mango lassi was a nice size and had the perfect amount of mango flavor. Sometimes it's really hard to tell if there is even mango in it at all with some places, but this had the perfect amount. The veggie samosas....meh...they are veggie samosas. Nothing really special about them to be honest, but they were just an after thought. The real stars of dinner definitely shined! Crispy, hot, and filling Fish Pakora: 8/10 meaty, tender, and aromatic Butter chicken: 10/10 juicy, tender dark chicken meat. Gravy was rich, thick, buttery, tangy, and aromatic. Best butter chicken I've had too. Paneer saag: 8/10 very good! Thick and full of spinach. Paneer was delicious Garlic naan: 9/10 always good but this one is flavorful and full of garlic. Being an Indian myself, I usually don't go to Indian Restaurants but if I do, my expectations are super high! We went to the Tandoori Palace for dinner and were greeted by Virendar, our server who was very welcoming and polite. He offered us some hand sanitizer as we seated ourselves! They have an outdoor dining area so we sat there and ordered the Daal Makhani, Black pepper chicken and Chili Naan and I have to say that the food made me feel nostalgic of my time in India. Everything we got was made with a lot of love (trust me I can find that out for Indian food) rich in flavor and rightly priced. I went for the lunch special ($14.99) which was a good deal (I thought) given all the food. Not pictured was a daal soup which was zingy and flavorful with some kind of earthy note I couldn't quite place. The naan was ample which is good because I usually have to do two orders of the stuff at other places. The restaurant was clean and the staff were were friendly. I'm the only person here but, it's early. They've just opened. Beer selection is very good, service is excellent and the food is oh so good. I'm having a Flying Horse, paneer tikka masala and aloo paratha. The paneer is, texture wise, perfect. Firm but not too firm. It melts in my mouth. The gravy is some if the best I've eaten. Full of flavor but could be a bit spicier for me. Of course, they ask your spice level and I said a 5 on a 1-10. Next time I will order a six or possibly seven. As far as ambience, it's nothing special. Booths, tables, pictures of Indian culture on the walls. Small. A few tables outside. I'm giving it a strong 3.5 but since there's no half points it's showing as a four. Definitely a 3.5 though! Oh, one shoutout to my server. He was really friendly and enjoyable.
