Ignore the haters. Nikki and her staff at Tangled Up Salon are fantastic, and I have never before received such a phenomenal cut for my thick curly hair - which over the years has been described by other stylists as "unmanageable," "impossible," and "too curly to really style." Nikki not only managed, but she shaped it so that, for the first time ever, my curls just fall into place in a way that flatters my features with minimal effort on my part. All my life, I've been characterized as the smart girl. Thanks to Nikki, I now feel pretty, as well. My first trip to Tangled Up was in August, 2021, so I don't know what the pricing structure may have been in the past. Currently, Nikki charges by the hour at a rate which is commensurate with her undeniable expertise. That rate was explained to me on the phone before I made the appointment. At that time, I explained that my hair was a mess (sadly not an exaggeration), but that I had a fixed amount that I'd budgeted for an appointment. The salon scheduled a 2 1/2 hour slot, which was the amount of time that my budgeted figure would cover at Nikki's regular rate, and a 50% deposit was required at the time I made the appointment. I think that's reasonable; no small business can be expected to reserve a significant portion of its busiest day of the week without some assurance that the client is going to show up. The space itself is impeccably clean, and has a chic vibe infused with warmth and humor. Not for a second did I experience that sinking sensation that I'm-not-cool-enough-to-be-here which I've sometimes felt at other salons. Because we'd established the costs before I even entered the building, I was free to simply relax and enjoy the experience. I didn't have to worry that my bill was going to include unanticipated fees that were added due to treatments the stylist decided were necessary mid-appointment, while I was essentially hostage in the chair. This is the first stylist I've met who uses the hourly rate approach to pricing, and it was a welcome change. Initially, Nikki took some time to simply examine my hair. She engaged in friendly conversation which gave me the opportunity to share what kind of look I wanted without expecting me to know how that should be achieved. Since the pandemic amply demonstrated that I have utterly no talent for hair design (friends, don't let friends cut and color their own hair), that was an enormous relief to me - but it was clear that if I'd had more specific ideas, she would have listened. Nikki then explained what she could accomplish in the time allotted, saying that while she couldn't do everything that she believed my hair needed, she thought I'd be happy with the result. She was so right! Throughout the appointment, she shared tips and tricks so I can maintain the look on my own. I particularly appreciated that she did not try to pressure me into purchasing the products that are available for sale at the salon. In summary, I'm delighted with the time I spent with Nikki and the others at Tangled Up. It was a considerable financial investment, but it was worth every. single. penny. Nikki is conscious both that her time/expertise is valuable, and that the price she understandably commands might be prohibitive on occasion, so she volunteered ways to mitigate the expenses going forward. And because my overall experience was so very positive, I look forward to returning regularly - which I never dreamed I would say about any salon. read more

Tangled Up Salon is the BEST salon in the Tidewater area-by leaps and bounds. I have lived in the area for over 25 years and have been frequenting various hair salons throughout my tenure here. When I discovered Tangled Up and made my first appointment with Jimmy, I realized very quickly that everyone else had been sub-par. I couldn't believe how much money I wasted for hair that was OK, when all the while I could have been leaving with FABULOUS hair! Jimmy is truly one of the most amazing stylists I have ever been to, and I firmly believe he is one of the best, if not THE BEST stylist in this area. He works wonders with color, has a keen eye for style, and believes in constant education and inspiration. If you trust Jimmy to make you look fabulous, believe me-he will. I love Jimmy and am so grateful I found him. Additionally, the salon itself is just awesome. There is a very relaxed and friendly vibe that you will pick up on upon entering the door. I found Tangled Up online in search of a salon or stylist that had experience with curly hair. Nikki has been doing my hair for over a year and I have a great experience every time. I have never really loved my hair, but now I embrace and LOVE my curls. At a recent appointment I was talking with her about the haircut and behavioral issues I am having with my 4 year old son. He hates getting his haircut and it is usually a traumatizing experience for us both. She convinced me to bring him in and let her work her magic. After a little tough love and humor he was sitting in the chair by himself, looking at a comic book and having a conversation with her. I could have cried. I was impressed immediately! Tangled Up Salon has great precautions in place for COVID -19 as soon as I opened the door they took my temperature, cleaned the handle of the door, strongly encouraged me to use the Hand Sanitizer they provide. Every one I encountered that work there was extremely nice and help full. I have to say the real super star was Barry Driscoll - He was very knowledgeable , and help me with color and cut suggestions, making sure I was comfortable during my visit, he even went to the place Next door and got me a coke. I got a wonderful haircut from Tanya on my first visit to Tangled Up. First off, she asked good questions to get a better feel for what I was looking for. As a result, she did a great job updating my long hair and creating more lightness and movement, which was just what I wanted. Her attention to detail was impeccable. I absolutely love this place! My whole family has been coming to Nikki since she opened the salon, and she takes such good care of us every single time. She helped me to love my natural curls, and taught me how to properly style them so I don't feel the need to straighten my hair anymore.
