If this is your first massage, just know this is not your typical spa experience. It felt much more like a massage parlor than a professional spa setting. I was never given paperwork to fill out, so they had no information about medical conditions, injuries, pressure preferences, or areas I may not have wanted worked on. They also never verbally asked me about any of those things themselves, which immediately felt unprofessional to me. The massage table had a white sheet with a folded blue sheet on top that I had to unfold myself to cover up. When the therapist first left the room, she didn't fully close the door and left it cracked open. I closed it myself, and then about two minutes later she walked back in without knocking while I was naked getting onto the table. [[HIGHLIGHT]]There was also a significant language barrier, which normally would not bother me at all, but it became uncomfortable when communication issues affected privacy and the massage itself.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] At one point she brought another woman into the room to use Google Translate, and the door was left completely open while I was laying there with my leg and glute exposed. I was also repeatedly pressured to purchase a $10 Chinese medicine oil add-on. I politely declined multiple times and explained I just wanted her to continue focusing on my problem areas, but I had to say no several times before they finally stopped asking. The walls are extremely thin, and I could hear conversations from the front desk throughout the massage. My massage therapist was even talking through the wall to a coworker or manager during the session, which made it difficult to fully relax. The massage itself was actually nice, and they were able to get me in quickly when I called to book. [[HIGHLIGHT]]However, I asked for specific work on certain problem areas and that request was mostly ignored, likely due to the communication barrier.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Overall, the experience lacked professionalism, privacy, and the relaxing atmosphere most people expect when booking a massage. read more

One of the best massages we've had in a long time. We came to town as tourists and we always like to treat ourselves after a long car ride. We have chronic neck and back issues so this is a must. They responded to us quick and were able to get us in with little to no waiting time. Prices were a great value, we did the couple's massage with each tailored to our individual needs. I started out with the traditional Thai massage (when they use their feet and apply steady deep pressure.). I would get this frequently when I lived out of state and had been to several places. Typically you leave your loose clothes on. The massage style wasn't what I expected so, I asked to switch to a regular massage with oil. This was amazing and better than I expected. (I'm posting this for both locations, as they are only a few miles apart, have the same ownership, and the staff is somewhat interchangeable) When getting to a new town for a new assignment, finding a good massage place is one of the trickiest things to do. Especially when it comes to Asian massage, because we all know some of the places are less about the massage and more about the ending. Tao's is definitely about the massage. The locations are neat and clean. The therapists are very good technically, and generally, genuinely care. I typically get a 90 minute ashiatsu. As with any massage, the therapist warms you up and feels for any especially tight spots. (I'm 6'2", 260, and like lifting heavier weights, so everything is always tight.) At some places, the therapist literally just walks on you. Here the therapists actually use their weight and technique to work the knots out. Sometimes they use the whole foot, and other times the heel, ball, or even their toes. In short, after a few minutes, they have gotten the bulk of the work done. Even though the women are fairly petite, they are able to delivery a very deep massage. They are not bashful about kneeling on the table and using their weight to get the knots out. After having gotten the heavy lifting done, they come back and use gentler techniques to relax the muscles (and you), and finish with some stretching. Yes, it is a few dollars more a hour than Massage Everywhere, but it is a far superior experience. read more

I've been dealing with chronic neck pain, leading to frequent headaches for years and so naturally, I didn't expect my masseuse to fix my problems within just one visit. However, my masseuse, Lisa, was very professional and after the massage, my pain level went down significantly, by at least 50-70%. 3 stars. While in Myrtle Beach, I was researching where I could get good, hard deep massages in the area and Tao came up on the top of my list. I was able to book a 2 hour massage for the next day, so I was quite happy with it. While on a call and seeing they offered different types of massages on the website, I asked specifically whether they could do deep, shiatsu where they could step on my back (pressure is better and much preferred for someone who's so used to deep massages like me), and they said yes. Upon showing up, I was led to a room to change. Immediately, I was a little let down. The room was ok..but definitely a little more run down than I was used to (mind you, I wasn't looking for anything too luxurious or anything). I also quickly found out there would be no way they could do steps on me a there were no ceiling handling bars available to for a therapist to balance while on me. I was quite disappointed actually. Once the massage began...I knew..I would be disappointed. While the pressure was good...the stroke and depth were there..but the massage just wasn't deep or the music soothing enough in a way that you could really relax. You could also hear noises from outside as well...so what a bummer. What bugged me was that during a massage...the therapist left the room twice, once to attend to another customer who can in (I knew because I could hear everything going on outside of my massage room) and another time to go to the bathroom. To be honest, I'm ok with the therapist leaving.. but I felt that at least they should politely let their customers know and add the massage time back to account for it (not being pick here..but that's the right thing to do!). After the massage was done..it was clear they didn't add any time to it. In fact.they left probably 5 min before the original due time even! I wasn't going to argue or anything..so I just paid an left...but was disappointed given I really wanted a good, deep 2 hour massage...but they didn't deliver to the level as I was hoping given the rating I saw on Yelp. Massage wasn't light stroke any mean..but the stroke wasn't in a very deep, relaxing way. Also, once the therapist finished stroking the last touches on my legs/feet, she used the same hands to massage my face. Given I was ok and knew my body was clean. However, that detail should also be thought of (and hands should be washed before touching face), too. Overall, ok price @ $70/hr and may be ok in Myrtle Beach area given there weren't so many places to go for deep tissue massages. When comparing the massage experience that I got there to where I frequent for massage now in my current city though..I still prefer my current place! read more

Found TAO after reading reviews and they had a really relaxing environment and my appointment was outstanding. This treatment removed far more knots out of my shoulders and back and when my appointment was finished I really felt great. We walked in with no appointment and were seen right away on a Thursday at 3:30pm. My niece and I had the one hour couples massage (lol). Even though we weren't a couple, we received the massages in the same room and they honored the couples rate. Both ladies did a fabulous job. I'll have to admit I've never had an Asian massage before. But now I'm a convert! My masseuse was Ci Ci. Very sweet and frequently checked with me to make sure the pressure was not too bad. I expected some pain, I knew I was very tight and had lots of knots to work out. My problem areas : my shoulder blades, my lower back and (don't laugh) my buttocks. You'd be amazed how much tension and stress you carry in your glutes, and when they are tight or spasming, THAT causes them top inch on the sciatic nerve. I'm convinced a lot of people who have sciatica would benefit from a butt massage. But don't get vulgar, just go with it. This was a very comprehensive massage, and a full-body effort on the part of my masseuse. She used her hands, elbows, forearms, knees and thighs to set me straight. She even did some nice stretches. This is the first time I can say I got a moderate to deep tissue massage and walked away not only NOT in pain from the massage but I also felt like all my knots had been worked out. I feel amazing. 1 hr was $70 which was a great deal but I think she said 90 minutes was around $100 which is also a great deal. I'll definitely be back. read more
