It's super dark in the lounge / bar and waiting area but I've been here for the lunch special in the main dining area as well which has high ceilings and is nicely decorated. I was here today at about 5:30PM for the happy hour (5-7PM) as a party of 3 - the bar was full and the lounge area was maybe half full. We seated ourselves at a comfy bench with a low table in between. It's not really meant for dining - truly meant to have a chat and a drink. We opted for the $1 dumplings and potstickers which were really tasty and meaty! There was a $1 veggie dumpling and $5 hot edamame to choose from as well. We all opted for the $5 house white wine, which was very decent all things considered. The waitress can provide a full drink menu, and during happy hour any wine bottle under $100 is half off! Tao uptown is a popular scene for both celebrities, locals & tourists. I took my sister here for her birthday lunch and set me back $267 for 3 people. We only ordered 3 items and, well, 3 glasses of red; they were all delicious. Peking duck was absolutely delicious, pricey for $82 half duck though it was abundantly shareable worth if you have at least 4 in your group. Beef with broccoli $54 was very tasty made of NY strip cut with well-seasoned sauce over cut up broccoli stems and stramed florets. Although it was very delicious it was a very small plate to share. Our third shareable was a typical $20 shrimp fried rice was okay. Overall, food was delicious but our waiter was just okay and did minimum service. I had to waive him to bring more water...I don't remember him checking on us but could hear him when he took somewhat a long time to go through the menu with the table behind us. I would have liked the same courtesy but perhaps because I spoke about getting the peking duck at the outset... We went to dinner many years away, and this spot is still jumping. Our 10:00pm reservation was pointless, we didn't get sat till 11:15pm so we end up eating dinner close to midnight. The music was great and the GM didn't catch his name but we waited so long that he came over as took our order. He was the saving grace. Tao is a great place to have good food and enjoy a beautifully designed restaurant. Fair warning though, if this is a first date it might be kind of hard to hear each other. It is also kind of pricy but I've yet to try something on the menu that I don't like. The tune on pringles was very thin and only three pieces so thats like veryyyy overpriced. The tuna avocado roll was delicious. If you like dumplings the pork one is the best I've tried. Of course that's only if you like port. I'd pass on the rock shrimp lettuce dish. She got the crispy veg rolls, pad thai, and the chocolate zen parfit. The lo mein was deeelish. 10/10 would recommend it. It's plentiful and the flavors are on point. However, the pad thai was a little too sweet for our liking but plentiful as well. The veg rolls and dessert were great. They were both enough to share which was nice. To be quite honest, I went back to back weekends because my friends (6 total) all wanted to go again. That being said, if you're not on time for your reservation you should expect to wait 30 minutes to an hour, though the lounge has great drinks to ease you up a bit. I'm not crazy about the food at this location and have never eaten anything that I thought was the worth the price, the only exception being the banana pudding. It has the perfect sweetness and the crumbled wafers give it the perfect texture contrast which makes banana pudding -- done right -- so delightful. This is one of our favorite restaurants to get together. We were a party of seven. Food and drinks were great. Service by the waiter was acceptable. Good ambiance. What soured our experience was the interaction we had as we were leaving with someone ( young asian woman with blond hair and a walkie talkie in her hands) who was manning the second floor. She talked to us very rudely and in an insulting manner instead of politely asking us to move to one side to avoid blocking the narrow walk way. No patron should be treated like this. We just had guests from Italy and took them for dinner to Tao. It was so nice experience with either food, drink, atmosphere and waitress who was sweet lady and very helpful with the menu. My friends and I went to this club while on our trip to NYC looking for a good time. We were quite disappointed at Tao. The music was good but it was hot and crowded and the staff was rude. One of the girls in our party was having a 21st birthday and when we asked the bartender if he was having any specials for that he gave us 4 tequila shots and charged us full price. Also, we heard from another group a bouncer took their credit card and told them they had to spend $150 minimum, we weren't told this but when it was questioned we were told it is at the bouncer's discretion. The steak came sliced and was cooked to perfection, which I appreciated. The lo mein didn't kill me, which i also appreciated. I have been going to Tao midtown and downtown since I moved to New York. But I am very annoyed at Tao Midtown (they never do that in downtown) that they made you wait at least 30 min even you had a reservation (it happened to me EVERY time except I went there for lunch). They blamed it on the customers not paying or leaving fast enough. But the management is to be blamed. If the average duration of a meal in their restaurant is 2 hours instead of 1, then don't f---ing schedule so many people in the reservation window. And I am really tired of people who believes they are either very important or that they are SOMEBODY in Tao, both the people who work there and the customers. I was 8-month pregnant when I went there last, waiters and the customers do not give a shit about the possibility of knocking me over with their high-heels-fast pace walking and that I am supposed to give way to them. The food has been pretty solid except the last time I went there. I tried the rock shrimp the first time. It just doesn't go with the lettuce. It will be much better served by itself. My husband had the short rib as appetizer. They gave you 4 tiny pieces of meat. The rest of the food still deserve a 4-star. read more

I could see how it's a good place for a big group because tables have lazy Susan's which make sharing easy. I visited Tao with co-workers as part of an offsite, and had an amazing time! Prior to this visit I'd never been to Tao, but I'd heard remarkable things about the venue, ambiance and food; I can confirm it's all true. To be fair, the exterior of Tao isn't anything to write home about, and seems a little sketchy at first glance. Within seconds of walking in however, it's clear that this is an upscale place. The interior is well appointed, the lights are low, the walkways are lavish, and then you get to the main room; it's magnificent. Immediately visible is the giant statue in the back which has various patterns and animations projected on to it. The seating is distributed on a declining staircase for dates, with flat areas near the bottom for larger groups. Our group was quickly seated thanks to a reservation we had, and our view was stellar. The service was quick and responsive, and correctly recorded a number of diverse orders and re-orders throughout the night. I managed to sample a number of dishes that were both diverse and filling, which culminated in a decadent dessert. The star food of the evening was the massive fortune cookie that had a number of unexpected (but whimsical) fortunes inside. As a quick note, this is definitely an expensive place and you'll want to be prepared for the bill. Overall, I highly recommend visiting Tao if you're going out for a fancy date or a corporate group outing. read more
