At around 7:00 PM on May 31, 2026, my roommate and I came to Tao's Bao for dinner. My roommate was treating me. Since my roommate does not speak Chinese, we communicated entirely in English throughout the visit, and the staff at the front counter also spoke to us in English. I have been to this restaurant many times before and have usually left an 18% tip. This was my roommate's first visit. After we finished our meal, my roommate paid the bill but did not add a tip. After noticing that no tip had been left, the staff member at the front counter came directly to our table and asked my roommate, "Cash tips?" My roommate seemed surprised and responded, "No."This interaction already made us feel very uncomfortable and pressured. In addition, both my roommate and I felt that the service had not been particularly good. After that, the staff member shouted toward the kitchen in Chinese: "These two are freeloading! They didn't leave a tip!" Since my roommate does not understand Chinese, he did not know what was being said. Located in a strip mall with plenty of parking, we decided to try this place instead of our usual. Love that Stony Brook has a growing number of Chinese restaurants probably due to their proximity to the SBU. Small restaurant, simple setting. We ordered the pork soup dumplings, chicken soup dumplings, scallion pancakes, steam pork and shrimp dumplings and beef lo mein with a honeydew bubble tea. The soup dumplings had little soup but otherwise the dishes were all very good. They have a Peking duck dinner which we will have to try one day. Service is friendly and efficient. In my never ending quest for the best Chinese food, I stumbled upon my new gold standard at a strip mall in Stonybrook. I had stopped in to grab a menu from the place next door and discovered this gem as I was pulling out. Peking Duck??? The sign caught my attention and I just had to check it out. Sometimes you just don't know where you find the next great place. Anyway, I met the owner June. What a lovely person. We talked about their take in regional Chinese cuisines and their strict adherence to authentic ( Sorry no beef with brocolli, egg rolls, or orange chicken). Instead it was a menu pulling from the best of Beijing, X'ian, Hunan, and Szechuan cuisines. Oh my goodness, where do I start?? Ok..first time time..had to try the X'ian Spicy Lamb noodles. Where do I begin??? All of their wheat ( not rice) noodles are hand pulled right there. That makes a HUGE difference. Chewy, springy, and so delicious. June told me the traditional version came with lamb intestine too ( not a fan of intestines so thank you for the heads up). These were so damn good. Spicy and tingly, hearty and delicious. The spice was the good kind, the kind that encourages you dig back in inspite of the heat ( much like the first time I had real Pad Thai at the old Jai Ya in Elmhurst). It was an explosion of flavor. I was hooked. I went back later that day to order the Peking Duck Dinner for my friends and got the Spicy Beef Noodle soup to take home for my son. Again, those same amazing noodles and the most flavorful broth plus soft and melt in your mouth beef shin and tendon. Another keeper. 2 days later I brought in the Peking Duck dinner for my friends. First out of the gate...these came with homemade pancakes like they should. Bao are for roast pork, not peking duck. The duck was expertly sliced, and was juicy not dry. My friends were blown away. The full dinner came with scallion pancakes, cold poached chicken in a chili oil and vinegar sauce, cold noodles with sesame sauce, and sauteed bok choy with garlic. I've ordered it twice already and really want to get it right at the restaurant when the crispy skin is at its crispiest. Everything I ordered from here hit the authenticity I crave and were so on point. Gotta recommend the spicy lamb burgers too. If you've had at X'ians famous at any of their locations, you will be so happy to not have to go the Flushing for this delight. I promise to post pictures. Trust me on this...you want to go here. Just came here with my daughter on Columbus Day. It's definitely a hole in the wall, but their food is wonderful. I would steer very clear of the awful service given at red river which is literally a 2 minute walk from this place and come here instead! Closest thing to Flushing dumplings to you can get around here. I had tried a lot of dumplings around this neighborhood and they are either too doughy, thick skinned, not juicy, or felt like over marinated or super old filling. I was so surprised by the quality of the food! A simple take out/dim sum restaurant in Stony Brook with the taste of the heart of Asia. Beef noodle soup: The beef was so, so tender, and they gave so many pieces that I and the 2 people I shared the bowl with were super satisfied! Soup was incredibly flavorful and noodles delightfully chewy. I've eaten at some of the best beef noodle places in Asia (Yong Kang Noodles in Taiwan, the country that basically invented beef noodle soup), and this was a fierce competitor! But it seemed the highlight was the Dim Sum & Bubble Tea, which I forgot to order because I got excited when I saw they had chicken feet. The chicken feet were flavorful but cold. I wasn't expecting that twist. Now I wasn't sure if they were supposed to be cold or she got suddenly swamped & rushed them. So I saved them to take home & heated them up. When I did that, they were what I had hoped they would be when I ordered them. If that makes any sense. The Beef & Scallion Meat Pies were really good. They reminded me of an oversized fried dumpling except they were round, kind of round. A man & his son standing outside told me to get the dumplings, but the feet swayed me. Came here after I was really craving shrimp wonton noodle soup. First of all, the place is really tiny with little seating. The prices were also kind of expensive, the shrimp wonton noodle soup, pork soup dumplings and a can of coke cost me $20.10, in Queens that would cost less than $15 easily. The service was good but the food was just okay; the noodles were actually kind of undercooked which I enjoyed, but the broth wasn't clear like I usually see. The wontons were good. As for the soup dumplings, they didn't really contain much soup inside. First few times I came here and ordered the Dandan noodles it was amazing, flavorful and the same every time I ordered it. Unfortunately the past 5 times I've gotten it each time it was a completely different meal, with different ingredients and made with boiled spaghetti. The chef seems different every time, too. Tried Tao's for the first time today on the recommendation of a friend and it did not disappoint! Another friend and I were really in the mood for Authentic dumplings so we ordered the chicken dumplings, Shrimp shumai, and Crystal Shrimp dumplings. All three were really good and you can tell they are all homemade. The dumpling sauce was perfect and the chili oil was some of the best chili oil I've ever had. Maybe I'm spoiled by Splendid Noodle which is literally a 2 minutes walk from this place. Or maybe I just have higher standards for beef noodle soup. Whatever it is, one thing is for sure, the beef noodle soup here is not good. Its a bowl of soup laden with MSG and oil with noodles that taste like they came from a packet of ramen and random chunks of beef/cartilage/fat. The pork/meat buns were meh as well. If you just need to eat to survive or just prefer extremely savory/salty food, you'll be fine here. Update: recently had their cumin lamb sandwiches which FYI, you get two big ones in an order and it was delicious. Perfectly spicy, smoky, soft and perfect bread bun. I got a sweet potato Ok I really got 2 sweet potato and a poppy seed bun placed in those nostalgic wax bags and a Taro Bubble tea usually I only drink black milk tea but there was a communication problem she told me they had no tea? but I said taro she said yes so I said yes one needs to taste taro to understand taro its purple in color and it has a heavenly sweet taste that sometimes can be just too smoothly sweet and why I almost never choose taro with bubbles ahh now the bubbles I LOVE with a passion Bubbles (tapioca) squishy and they can be awesome or hard or chalky(?) most of my bubbles were perfect except for 2 chalky ones I would not mention but this is the first time I had such a bubble this place still gets 5 stars because there is nothing around like it fresh and yummy buns great bubble tea except for the two balls friendly though language barrier service prices a little higher then the city but this is not the city so its fine and dandy if I am near I will for sure stop in for a bun and tea read more

Small space, but good selections, quick and friendly service. This place is owned by the same folks as Tao's delicacies, but don't expect the same full restaurant. While it's not as big as shops we might visit in flushing or Chinatown, Tao's does a good job of keeping it authentic. It's the perfect blend of Asian/Asian-American at the affordable prices you'd expect. I only wish they would open another full restaurant in stony brook. read more

My family and i love getting dim sum from here. It is authentic and delicious. The restaurant is small with seating. There is a bit of a language barrier, but pointing to the menu items always seems to work if there's no English speakers working. This place is small. Rather clean, but hot and sticky with no AC on despite a warm summer day. We ordered the red bean buns, beef patties, clear shrimp dumplings, and soy milk. We paid $21 total in cash (cheaper than credit card). Everything tasted like heated up frozen food. The beef patties were super oily too. No no no... I don't even know where to begin... So on Saturday morning my friend invites me to try this place "Northern Manor" in Bayside Queens for Dim Sum and Dumpling brunch. I was looking for a place that sells Roast Pork Buns in Suffolk County because after having them at Northern Manor I was craving them. I google this place and decide to trek out to Stony Brook. I decide to get the following: 1. Fried Pork Dumplings - So I ordered fried and I got boiled so that sucked. 2. Roast Pork Buns - omg like I can't even describe them. It was a white dough barely filled w any Pork. No shiny brown soft bun like it should be, almost looked like something white you'd make in ceramics class. Totally disappointed. If it wasn't already in the garbage I would have taken a pic of it. 3. Egg Custard Buns - Not bad but again they use this horrible white ceramics looking dough and the ratio of egg custard to dough was way off. Barely any egg custard. 4. Shrimp Shumai Dim Sum - Looked good but it seemed like the filling wasn't even close to being cooked. Looked like raw mixture of meat or seafood meat. Was not edible. Overall I wish this place was good but it looks like the only place you can go for good Roast Pork Buns is in Queens or NYC. A complete waste of $30+ dollars. read more

Awful. I was so excited to have dim sum and some lo mein. The chicken in the lomein was old and you can tell it was reheated. I'm nauseous thinking about it. The shrimp dumpling and chicken dumplings were the 2 stars I gave. The shrimp shumai were fishy and not fresh at all! The sticky rice with chicken was tasteless but gooey in a bad way. I would give this 2-stars, I was kinda disappointed. I came there with my bf today, we ordered soy milk, shrimp shumai, cruller, cumin lamb sandwich, and chicken feet. It took so long to get the food. We received the soy milk when we about to leave. The soy milk tastes like power soy milk mix a lot of water, and the soy milk it is not hot at all (we ordered the hot one). And the shrimp shumai seems like cheap frozen shumai. We found a string on the shumai, but the didn't apologize and didn't do anything (bad attitude). The cruller tastes bad too, it's just bad. Had a bubble tea craving and was around do decided to give this place a shot. Owner is very nice but the bubble tea is lack luster. Bubble tea in almost everyplace is the same because everyone uses like the same powder. What sets places apart is how they make it. For one, good places will use warm water to dissolve their mixtures because it allows for it to go into solution very quickly then shake it with ice to cool it down. They will do the something similar with their bubbles (tapioca). This place sadly does none of that. I still had bits of powder in my bubble tea and all the bubbles had a hard chewy center. Would give one stars for the bubble tea but I can't do that in fair conscience because I haven't tried anything else there. Then again, if you can't do the simple things right, how do you the other things? Food wise, I had a look on their menu. The thought the point of dimsum was to have small bite-sized dishes, not half-full sized ones. They pretty much doubled the sizes of all their typical dimsum dishes. Normal sizes at a typical dimsum place is 2-4 pieces for $1-3 each. Here, everything is doubled. Defeats the purpose I think of dim sum. That said, I would be hesitant to think this place can evenly remotely replace the true dimsum world in flushing, ny. read more
