There are times when you need to circle back around and reconnect with a place that you enjoyed years ago, but for whatever reason we have just not crossed their threshold. That's the way it was for us and Taproom, a long time Greensboro pub on Battleground Avenue. The last time we stopped by was pre-pandemic. Prior to Covid we had been somewhat regulars, visiting every couple of months. As we walked in, it was as if we had entered a time machine. Nothing aesthetically had changed. That's a good thing because Taproom exuded the comfortable dark wood intimate setting that it is always enjoyed. We wanted a little bar food and a couple of adult beverages. At the suggestion of the bartender, we split a Caesar salad as well as a Black and Bleu black flatbread. The Caesar salad is a classic and was very satisfying. Can't say it is special, but it is simply delicious. The flatbread was a lot of fun. It comes with olive oil, caramelized, onion, crumbled bleu cheese, mozzarella, and balsamic glaze. We added blackened fillet tips as our protein. My only complaint is I should've ordered two. The flatbread is incredibly satisfying and the beef tips were savory, tender, and flavorful. I went old-school on the drink. I had a 20 ounce Guinness, while my wife had a mule. Both were spot on and worked really well with the food we had. Everything was very affordable as well. Taproom is loud and feels neighborly. I reviewed it nine years ago and I'm changing nothing. I highly recommend a visit if you're looking for drinks and pub food in a classic environment. read more

The Tap Room has become one of my favorite spots in town. It's kind of hidden in a popular shopping center, and definitely unexpected. The exterior is pretty dark, and can appear closed, but don't let that deter you! Inside is a beautiful, large bar, with tables surrounding it. It's clean and classy with tons of drink options and daily specials. The scotch options seem particularly varietal (I'm not a scotch drinker, but judging by the bottles and menu) and there are a lot of beers to choose from. I've only dined in at lunch so can't speak for dinner, but the service has always been great. We stopped in on Memorial Day for this visit and only the bartender was there and in charge of both the bar and other tables, but she did an amazing job keeping up with the hustle and bustle of the patrons coming in and out. She is always super patient and has a great attitude! We ordered the wing special (85 cents per wing) tossed in Buffayaki. Delicious! The wings are huge and the sauce was tasty. Highly recommend trying these even when not on special. We also ordered the Carlita Pita - my personal favorite sandwich, the Taproom Club with Pasta Salad (mom's top choice), and the Carolina Burger and tots. Every bite was great! I love going in an establishment for the first time and feeling like I'm a regular. Holiday season and the husband & I wanted to kill a little time between visiting the Holiday Market and dinner, so we stopped in to enjoy a beer. Football was on so there was lots of revelry and good times. We only ordered the Mac & cheese bites but they were some of the best. Great variety of craft beers - our go-to is @Red Oak. You get bonus points for me if you have something on the menu with Pimento Cheese and they had multiple things! We got.... Grilled Chicken Pimento Cheese Quesadilla: Grilled chicken breast, bacon and our housemade pimento cheese. Masters Burger: Housemade pimento cheese and bacon. Mac + Cheese Bites Appetizer All were delicious! The Mac + Cheese appetizer was a lot larger than I imagined. All portions were a good size and we didn't leave hungry. The only negative is that it was a little slow, the bartender was fabulous but she was the only one working and it was busy. Also note that on Friday it actually doesn't open until 12:00. Both Google and Yelp say 11:30 so when we showed up at 11:45 we were surprised when the door was locked. read more

The Tap Room has a very loyal following for a good reason. The place is not on a lot of people's radar, and that's a good thing. Offering a full bar and many favorite local brews, The Tap Room is foremost a place to meet friends. They feature Natty's, Foothills, and Preyer Brewing to name a few of the local brews. Drink specials are abundant so check out the chalk boards. While the place is set up as a bar, most visitors are here for a bite. A menu complete with apps, soups, salads, burgers, sandwiches, and wraps, the Tap Room delivers on food that rises above normal pub fare. On a recent visit I had their Black Bean Wrap and it was terrific. The burgers are very good and there are many options for the vegetarians in the group. This was a spontaneous choice for lunch on a Saturday. My wife frequents Tap Room somewhat often for lunch but I don't get many chances. When we arrived plenty of seating was available. We chose a high top and were quickly greeted by the bartender. I tried ordering a beer from the list on the table but was informed that the list was outdated and shouldn't have been out there. Hmph. When she brought our drinks out we went ahead and put our orders. I got the Blackened Burger with a side of Cucumber & Tomato Salad and an Onion Ring appetizer. While we waited we enjoyed our beers and I went ahead and got a shot of the only Mezcal on the Tequila list. I want to make clear that they have a pretty decent list of Tequila. I really wanted an Anejo but didn't see what I wanted which is why I chose the Mezcal and was happy with my choice. Along with the Tequila they also had a good choice of other liquors available. Our onion rings came out shortly before our meals and were some of the best that I've had. I'm serious. The batter was crunchy and the onions were soft. The dipping sauce was good but I felt wasn't needed since they were so good. Our meals came a short time later and my burger was almost great. I asked our server when I ordered if the burger was truly blackened and she said that it was. I feel that it could have used more seasoning . I found that I almost couldn't taste it but aside from that the burger was delicious. My Cucumber & Tomato salad was spot on. I enjoy the twang from the vinegar and onions, especially since this was a warm day and I love making this dish when garden vegetables are coming in. Overall, this is a solid 4 stars. Between the service and the food I was mostly pleased. If the beer list and burger descriptions were accurate this would be a 4.5 star review. read more

Very disappointing compare to my previous visit. I usually get half off wings to go but today I couldn't take them to go which sucks. We still visit Tap Room Grill on a regular basis. The strengths of this American style pub continue to be: tap beer (10 micro/imports including locals), the best scotch selection in town, food and service in a nice but low key environment. Recently they made changes to their menu and the new/changed additions definitely improve the offerings. In particular, I really like their Sliders "appetizer". These are 3 delicious homemade, meatball-like mini-burgers. Like their full-sized burgers, you get to apply a 'style' to them such as Jazz, River, Blackened, etc (there are about 8 styles). The meat itself is very tasty and the mix-and-match styles add even more character. The new menu also added quite a few other sandwiches, etc and, in my opinion, they all are good additions; especially the new daily soup choices. Tap Room still offers a food and tap beer d'jour special with Tuesdays being $1 off all tap beers. Mondays is 1/2 priced wine day. As evidence to the consistency of the place, the staff here has been constant for several years - which for a bar is a remarkable achievement. It's been interesting visiting this bar since it was Park Place, then the original owners converted it to Taproom. Some days there is a hint of that original spunk and drive. Most days it has devolved into routine. The service has become complacent and as prices continue an upward trend, the food continues its downward spiral as quality, content, and any sense of efficiency in the kitchen has disappeared. [Two exceptions: the sliced turkey on their club is superior to anywhere, and the somewhat recent addition of Bob's Burgers of the Week at least shows some of the original creativity that made the place a go to, lunch or dinner.] These days Moes next door or IHOP across he street might be a better option for food quality and value. Back to the service for a moment before I end this entry. Perhaps laurel resting might best describe it. Most of the bartenders have been around for a while. Some still go out of their way to make you feel welcome, Carla for example; others go out of their way to make sure "it's done right," Jess is one of those; others seem to have forgotten that you are only as good as your last game, that would be Gina in my book. Sure, everyone has their good and bad days, but Gina seems to go out of her way to make sure you know hers has never been a good day. She might have been good one day, and she still hustles, slinging when she feels the need, or is alone, but more often than not those good days' feelings are lost in obscurity. read more

It was one of the places I've always seen driving down Battleground but never stopped in. That changed last night and I'm glad it did. The environment is a small pub/tavern with 3 large TVs. Dark wood, soft lighting. A wide selection of beer and whiskey. You could spend some serious money on whiskey there. So tempting. We got crab dip, a cob salad and a River burger. The dip was executed well and it comes in a very generous portion with flat bread. The beer concerned me at first as the glass felt room temperature but the beer was cold as it should be. The River burger was excellent. It will be difficult to try something new when we go back. Fries crisp but not dry or too crunchy. The bar top was a little tacky. It wasn't dirty. Just a little bit of that sticky feeling. It was a Saturday night when we went in to eat about 8pm with only 2 other patrons. I asked the bartender and she said it was the time of year along with a couple other new places opening up. But the place started to fill up as we were leaving. The one knock I'll give it is voices seem to carry really easily. I could this place being loud but as a pub/tavern, that's expected. ANY other time we have gone and there have been other servers the service has been atrocious. The other servers are rude and it takes an act of god for them to acknowledge you sitting down. Came in for a night cap. Had driven by this bar when I was apartment hunting before I moved to GSO. Had already eaten so was just here for a beer. Their selection was very nice. Probably 10 taps with a nice selection from Chimay to Bells. Got a Guilford Golden. $4 a pint so not expensive. The place Was busy but not packed. Found some room at he bar and a stool opened up about half way through my beer. Bartender was ok, nothing super friendly. Did come ask if I wanted a refill before I was done, so that is nice. There may have been 10 people in the bar and it was so loud that we couldn't hear each other. There was no music playing, it was just the other patrons. This was our first time. We moved to Greensboroin February and finally got around to eating here. The place was very busy and everyone seemed to be having a great time. It is very much a "bar" scene, which is kind of nice to see. My husband ordered the chicken pimento quesadilla, which is by far the best thing I've tasted...EVER!, and I had the MASTER which is a burger with pimento cheese and bacon. I rarely eat red meat or burgers for that matter, but honestly, this is the best burger! Our service was great, even tho it was pretty busy. I have worked within walking distance of Tap Room for 7 years now. Only today did a lunch appointment suggest we try this spot. Why have I not known about this place previously?? Went there for lunch and the place was almost empty, got our food quick, and it was on par with Hops and Big Burger Spot! I had the "river" burger and it was amazing.
