I am a picky person when it comes to Mexican food. This is one of my favorites in Kansas City. I HIGHLY recommend the Maria Especial. It's the best Mexican dish in the city (in my opinion!). The fajitas are also very flavorful with searing and a delicious marinade. You can tell they make their chips in house and fresh. They bring out a red mild salsa and a spicy salsa verde. Camarones Mazatlan-Food was so good, perfect portion size (might be shareable for some), do recommend if you like a spicy kick in your food. Horchata could use some improvement, but overall good experience as staff was very friendly. Would definitely return and order this dish again. read more

I ordered the #20 combo; a taco, tostada and chalupa, I had a choice of beef or chicken. Unfortunately I ordered beef - the worst ground beef that I've encountered - weird texture and no flavor. Fortunately they screwed up and one of the items was chicken; much better. The taco shell was hard and stale tasting and the tostado and chalupa shell was so soggy that I was unable to pick them up and just had to mix it up and eat it like a taco salad with crumbled up chips on top. Stopped here during the Taco Trail in KCK on National Taco day. They were one of the stops on the trail and I was so shocked that I had never gone here before! We walked into a very large and clean restaurant. Everyone was very friendly and they seated us right away. There was a 2 man mariachi band behind us, but they were good and didn't bother us a bit. We started with some delicious frozen drinks and ordered lunch. I had the Pollo Loco, my sister had the quesadilla especial, and my mom ordered the enchilada combo. We loved everything we had and there was plenty to take home. They make their own tortillas and guacamole, so please order both. I will definitely be back. read more

BIG, big disappointment. We eat at a different Mexican restaurant every Sunday because it's my favorite. It's always fun and delicious everywhere we go - except HERE. This place has stale store bought type chips, so-so salsa, no water refills, slow service and way too long of a wait for food that was served cold on a cold plate. The excuse was because it had sour cream and lettuce inside. The MEAT was cold, though. The waiter never came back to check on us until my cold food had sat out even longer. I only ate a few bites. Finally a manager came by to see how everything was but by then we were ready to go. We had been there for an hour at that point. I could have ordered something else but was too mad after sitting there for so long. Of course, we were charged for the food anyway and my husband is a nice person and didn't want to dispute it. So, $11 went into the trash. And I'm still hungry. We were the minority there and noticed a huge difference in attention given to the other guests while we were mostly ignored. I guess if you're Mexican you might have a different experience here. We will never return. read more

I haven't been here in over a year which means I have not been here since all this Covid-19 ridiculousness. Picked up a to go order today that I had called in. Instead of shrimp chimichanga, I received a steak chimichanga. The rest of the order -- another chimichanga and an enchilada dinner were correct, packed well, and still hot when I arrived home. A very tiny amount of salsa came with the chips and salsa. I spoke to Victor on the phone and also in the restaurant. He was very polite but he screwed up the order. The beans are perfunctory but the rice is outstanding. I'll be back if for no other reason than to train Victor properly. read more

Yes there are veggie dishes, and it isn't swimming in queso. Which seems just wrong if I order a nacho dish. I mean cheese is the name of the item. Dry chips with little meat. Yuck! My main draw there in the first place was I wanted to try the fried banana dessert. It was ok. Also, the other reasons for not being thrilled with this place is the bait and switch played on me and others. There was a commercial on the night before (which re-perked my interest), for a 2 for 1 entree. We get there and our not so friendly waitress tells us, that was a grand opening deal and it is no longer available. I told her I just saw the commercial last night. Before we left, my roomie over heard another lady ask about the same deal and her waiter said it was good. Roomie pulls him over and ask, what's up? He talks with the manager and goes back and tells his customer that it is not available. I won't be returning here. Bad business ethics. read more

As soon as my husband pointed out that they had tacos al pastor on the menu, I should have just ordered a whole plate of them. Instead I got a more pedestrian taco/enchilada combo and one taco al pastor to try. That impulse-purchased side item was the highlight of my meal. I've considered El Camino Real at 7th & Central to be the pinnacle of tacos al pastor quality, but I think Tapatio edges them out if only because the pork is a bit leaner. Admittedly the rest of my meal was kind of meh, but I'd go there again just for the street tacos. Next time I'm looking forward to finding out if they pass my tamale test. read more

Tapatio is located in a convenient location right off i-70. The restaurant is large and looks nice on the inside. It definitely does not have the feel that most of the Mexican restaurants in KCK have. The service and pricing is also pretty good! I am not a huge fan of the food. It's only good, nothing fantastic or special. I also feel that the flavors are a little muted. It's close to authentic Mexican food without the "punch." I'll go back for sure because they have GREAT nachos but I don't think that I'd try much else. mmm...that's a lie, they have killer queso! read more

The location is convenient. The service was okay (it took a bit too long to get refills, and our particular server wasn't a bundle of enthusiasm...it was clearly a 'job' that night). The food was plentiful and good. Ask for queso with your chips; it wasn't brought out automatically. If you don't eat Mexican food, the pickings will be slim, but you can order off the kids menu for an additional charge of $2. The drink prices seemed reasonable. This restaurant is in the Prescott Plaza shopping center, at the north end of the 18th Street Expressway in KCK. It could be a good place to stop for something to eat if you're also shopping at the fantastic Sun Fresh market in the same center, which has a fabulous selection of Mexican groceries! I had the chiles rellenos today, one of my "go-to" dishes at Mexican restaurants because they're kind of tricky and messy to make at home. These were OK, but not stellar. The red sauce that covered them seemed to be freshly made, but for some reason didn't appeal to my sense of taste. The rice and beans were also OK, but not remarkable. I met a friend here for an early dinner. Lots of parking available and easy to find. There was a pleasantly boisterous atmosphere as they had a live band playing for a family's party as I walked in. They even had a tuba player! Fun stuff, great atmosphere. Clean tables and floor, etc. I stayed pretty safe and ordered two chicken tacos and a margarita on the rocks with salt. The chicken was nice and spicy, it came with cilantro and onions is all. I added salsa on top. The tortillas were doubled up which was good since they were thin. I have no complaints at all, service was good, price was ok, 2.99/taco. My drink was ok, kind of had that pre-mix taste. I only gave it three stars since I'm comparing it to the great salsa bar I had at another place, so ever since then every other place is a let down. My friend had recommended coming here since it was very close to her house. We figured it would be a good place to try! We went on a Friday night, the parking lot was packed so we thought this was a good sign! We walked in, it was dead. No one even greeted us at the door so we decided to seat ourselves. As we waited for the rest of our party to arrive, we ordered their margaritas which were on special for $4.99. That's a pretty good deal! The margs weren't too bad, but nothing too spectacular. After taking a look at the menu, I decided to order 2 tamales and a side of rice. My boyfriend ordered one tamale and the rest of the table ordered chimichangas. It took a little while our food to come out and I wish I could say it was worth the wait... but no way. Everyone got their food except my boyfriend. We had to ask about his, which I think they forgot about. While we were waiting on his, I cut into my tamale only to find no meat or cheese. It was only masa. I waited until the other tamale showed up to see if it was the same and it was. We decided to say something. She took it back to the kitchen and another waitress came out to talk to us and said they had new cooks in the back & they had purchased them from elsewhere this week so they weren't sure what happened. They brought the menu back out and let us choose something else on the menu. I ordered chicken enchiladas and my boyfriend ordered a soft ground beef taco. My enchiladas were okay but the soft taco.... looked like cat food. Absolutely terrible. Worst Mexican food I have ever eaten! Should have known better when the strip mall is loaded with patrons at several other eateries in the strip mall. We walk in to a very empty restaurant literally the only patrons. Music is blaring so loud we couldn't hear each other talk. Our food was terrible. I ordered the #20 which is a chalupa, taco and tostada. I asked if I could substitute the chalupa for rice and beans. The waitress said no problem. We get our food and I thought they made a mistake and gave me two tostadas but, no beans and rice. Wrong l got my beans and rice on a tostada shell small amount of beans and rice that was loaded with lettuce and sour cream. My taco and regular tostada was so soggy from water not grease that you couldn't eat it at all!! The flavor of the meat was disgusting. My husband's food was just as bad. I understand sometimes the shell on tacos and tostadas can become a little soggy if they sit a few minutes but, this place serves them soggy! When server asked if everything was ok but, you could clearly see we hadn't eaten another our food. We told him our complaints in a very nice way. He left our ticket and walked away! No I'm sorry no nothing. We paid $35.00 for literally chips and salsa and that wasn't even very good! We will never be back!! read more

Awesome! Really clean and great vegetarian options. Not your standard 'swimming in cheese and sour cream' mexican place but also plenty middle of the road options for those not looking for beef tongue stew. I've never seen a veggie flauta on a menu before in KC and they were fabulous. Great flavor, plenty of spinach and peppers. The horchata was thinner than other places but a really lovely amount of vanilla in it. One of the better horchatas I've had in KC. The rice is even super fluffy and not greasy. Prices were great - $30 for lunch for 3 adults. $2.99 margarita. Will definitely be back to try the tacos pastor. read more

I like the decor. Kind of a coast of Mexico vibe. The food was pretty good. My fish was cooked perfectly. It was moist and tender although bland. The fried shrimp were good. I dipped them in salsa for some kick. Cheese and jalapeno nachos were decent. If I return I would try them loaded. There was a weird oniony salad accompanying the fish. Not good. If someone wanted to meet there for dinner I would go but it is unlikely I will return on my own. read more

I have only orders burritos from this place so I'm only talking on behalf of the burritos. The burritos there are actually really good in particularly speaking of the burrito called "Tapatío burrito" the one that has melted cheese on top of it. Well there is nothing wrong with the burrito at all the only thing is if you order a chicken burrito and ask for extra chicken...DONT DO IT!!!!. Regular price of the burrito is $8 and some change but if you go on ahead and ask for extra chicken they will charge you an extra $6, it's not worth because your almost paying for another burrito but in reality your paying for the Chicken that's not there. Matter fact, they add extra rice and beans to make the burrito heavy and look bigger. It took me a while to get to the protein. I was very disappointed and mad because I paid $15 for this burrito. read more

My friend and I ate here a year ago, it was fine, service was slow, but the food tasted fine. We both had food poisoning the next day. I rarely get sick from food and my stomach was a mess that night and then I had food poisoning/diarrhea the next day as did my friend. So.. fast forward a year, my go to place for Mexican closed and in a pinch the same friend and I tried this place again.. good going down, nice waiter.. but, horrible night of sleep due to stomach stuff and then food poisoning the next day and a half.. both she and I had the same exact reaction twice.. won't need to return. And if a similar situation arises, I suggest Imodium, it was the only thing that slowed this thing. read more

Since moving closer to KCK, I've been trying to hit as many Mexican restaurants as possible because I love Mexican food and there are so many options in the area. My partner and I went here last night and we were pleased with everything. Our meals were both delicious - I had one of the combination platters (taco, burrito, and tostada - all with chicken) and he had the fish and shrimp with mushrooms and spinach. I also had two strawberry/mango daiquiris and he had two margaritas. At most Mexican restaurants I've been to, they really skimp on the booze in those drinks and they end up just tasting like a flavored sugar slush. But both of our drinks at Tapatio were great!
