Truly unforgettable and honestly the best part of my entire weekend. The miso udon was good as well - my partner thought the udon might've been just slightly overcooked. We split both and then decided to order the gyudon as well afterwards. The gyudon was also very good - daikon radish was a great addition to the flavor! With respect to the atmosphere/ambience - it's a small place, but cozy. The music was nice - the bartender allowed me to browse some of the records. One of the best things about this bar is that it focuses on the art of cocktail making and features the bartenders as artisans. Every employee is the epitome of top of the line hospitality. Each cocktail on the menu is unique and you won't find it replicated locally. The menu is seasonal, so you can always try something new. It's the kind of place where you can say to the bartender "I'm feeling something gin based, maybe something blackberry flavored" and they will make you a unique cocktail based on what you're feeling, even if you don't know exactly what you want. During the month of December, they hold "miracle at mezzo"- a Christmas themed pop-up that was previously hosted at intermezzo. During the cooler months, weekends and during the Christmas popup, it's gets extremely crowded, sometimes forming a line out the door. Depending on the weather, they will open up the front garage style door for more standing space. You should expect a 30-37$ tab for two cocktails, or maybe 15-18$ if you catch a happy hour special.

The food looked fantastic, so I decided to give them a shot. There's a lot to like here. The space is attractive, with the circular bar serving as the centerpiece. The menu is thoughtful, there's a solid wine selection, a few trendy non-alcoholic options, and a beer selection that feels a little like an afterthought. Unfortunately, the food was a mixed bag...and the biggest problem was execution. We started with the Local Gems & Cabrales Blue Cheese Fritters. Two fritters for a shared dish felt a little stingy, and one of mine was fried so thoroughly that the blue cheese had basically packed its bags and left the building. The accompanying salad, however, was excellent. The vegetables were incredibly fresh and beautifully prepared. The Mixed Skewer Asado was better. The steak was tender and flavorful, and the chicken was good. The shrimp, however, was significantly overcooked. Good flavor throughout, but again, execution was inconsistent. The Crispy Pork Belly came with a nice sweet-chili glaze, but the pork itself was overcooked and dry. Pork belly is basically the culinary equivalent of a layup. It's supposed to be rich, juicy and indulgent. This one missed the rim. The Caramelized Acorn Squash was enjoyable, although I wanted considerably more yogurt. The acidity and creaminess would have provided a much needed counterpoint to the sweetness. And then there was the water. The tap water was awful. I don't know what was going on with it, but after one glass I was ready to move on to something bottled. Service was another weak spot. Things started out fine enough, but after our plates were cleared, we waited an absurdly long time for the check. Once you're done eating and sitting there staring at an empty table, five minutes feels like ten...and this was considerably longer than that. Pulpo is a good example of a restaurant where I really wanted to like it more than I did. There are clearly some smart ideas behind the menu, and I appreciate the effort to create something a little different. But thoughtful dishes only get you halfway there. Execution is what separates a good restaurant from a memorable one. And in a downtown dining scene that's increasingly full of restaurants doing similar things, there are plenty of other options nearby that I'd choose before coming back here. Pulpo has potential. I'd just like to see the kitchen tighten things up before I give it another shot.

We started off with the Southern Sriracha Crab Cakes (Hearts of palm and jackfruit crab cakes, sriracha pimento, Thai chili glaze, seitan bacon crumbles, pickled fresno, scallion, sesame). These were great. Very crispy, the inside was the spitting image of crab cake filler, and there was just enough Old Bay to really sell it. Spicy sauces and other elements made this quite the lovely little app. We also had the Crispy Brussels Sprouts (Dan Dan tahini, toasted cashews, pickled fresnos, scallion). Wow, this was good. Tahini was a great choice, the sprouts were crispy crispy, and the cashews added a wonderful little crunch. My main was the Kimchi Fried Rice (Crispy fried jasmine rice, scrambled JustEgg, kimchi, sweet soy reduction, fried crab balls, kewpie aioli, scallion, sesame seeds). Better than some of the non-vegan fried rices I've had in my life! Great rice with some nice crisp, flavorful but not too funky kimchi, a nice soy sauce, and a nice aioli to sauce things up a bit. I also got to try a bucatini bolognese of some sort that I can't find on the menu anymore. Maybe it was a special. But it was good. Really deceivingly real meat crumbles, a lovely sauce, and bucatini is one of my favorite noodles. Big fan. Overall, this was not a good vegan meal. It was a good meal. I love places like this.
