Great spot to grab tacos. I went in, ordered at the counter and food was brought out, along with the house salsas. I ordered lengua (tongue), tripa (tripe), y chivo (goat). The lengua taco was good, chopped but identifiable, and the tripa was A+ being a bit crunchy and flavorful. All of the tacos came topped the same with onions and cilantro (which was bearable to me and my cilantro gene). The tacos come with limes, a charred onion, and house sauces- the red is less spicy than the green. The sabado y domingo portion of the menu is just things that are available on Saturday and Sunday, such as the barbacoa de chivo, tamales, caldo de pensa, the foods that take time. I would have been tempted but then... tacos. On another weekend visit I would for sure want to try the barbacoa. I wasn't sure if it would be just a counter or not but there are a number of large tables in their space, and the staff will bring the food to you once you order. It's a ultilarian place trying to feed their people on the cheaper side while still giving them tasty food. Parking - it's all street. Tuck in your side mirrors. The streets are narrow. these are one of the best tacos i've had in ny/nj. the flavor is so good where you don't even need sauces with it. this has been my go to spot for tacos and i will definitely be coming back. the cons however is that there isn't a menu with prices on it so you're basically ordering blindly. i would say that each taco is around $3 from my experiences. also, the steak and beef were a bit dry so i would recommend to skip those meats for tacos read more

Love the food!!! We came because the place was recommended to us by some friends and sure enough the food did not disappoint. I got a steak taco, Al pastor taco and a tripa taco. The tripe one was my favorite! They were all super super good and the salsas were good! The red one was my favorite. Cheap, delicious tacos just like they're supposed to be! I was HANGRY on my drive back to the city and running into ridiculous amounts of traffic, so I desperately needed sustenance. I knew I could find something around Suffern as a NY-NJ border hub. Thankfully, a few Yelpers have stumbled upon this place and shared the insider knowledge. It's basically a plain old cafeteria style joint. Very few decorations. Just frills-free tables, chairs, high chairs along the counter, drinks fridges, and TV's that, sí, are only showing fútbol. The kitchen is wide open and you can see everyone churning out the many kinds of tacos and a few other platos they offer, such as gorditas, quesadillas, and tortas. You know this place is legit when the boring chicken, steak, and pork meat tacos are outnumbered by meat options such as pig head, tongue, and ear that most gringos (including myself!) might be afraid of. I had the steak/bistec, goat/chivo, and al pastor tacos as well as a chicken tamale; weekend special treat. Everything was YUMMY. The meat was some of the best I've had outside of California. The tortillas were bomb and fresh off the grill since they make so many. The cilantro and onions were popping. While there aren't additional frills like guac that my bougie taco eating self might crave, I'm grateful I was blessed with these "for the people, by the people" versions, especially in my time of hunger. This place is not for foodies to overrun. It's simply a great pit stop for visitors craving tacos, and a regular spot for locals that want an affordable, filling taste of home. I was looking for a bite to eat after a long day of motorcycle adventures with Benedict C. when we came across Taqueria America. It looked like a hole in the wall, so I was hoping it would be authentic, and it was. The inside was clean, and there was a lot of seating at their hilariously fake marble tables. The kitchen is open air, and you have full view of it from the counter where you order. The staff speaks English which is convenient. I obviously ordered tacos, since this place is a taqueria. I got the cueritos (pork skin), cabeza (pork head), chivo (goat), and orejas (pig ears) tacos, since they are not commonly available. I did not really like the bland gelatinous texture of the orejas tacos. I much prefer other methods of preparation of pig ears. This was my first time having a chivo taco as well. I'm a big fan of goat meat, and the simple preparation allowed the gamy flavor to shine through. I've had cabeza (head) tacos before, but they're usually beef. The pork head tacos were much fattier, and the heavy seasoning tasted great. The cueritos tacos were probably my favorite. I'm surprised more taquerias have not thought to make pork skin tacos. They were salty, fatty, and crunchy, all the staples of something delicious. The salsas went well with all the tacos, the green being more spicy and the red having more a smoky flavor. Well, let me tell you it was worth the drive. I think that these are hands down the best tacos that I have had outside of Mexico. If you have had Tacos in Mexico you know what I'm talking about. This place is totally legit. I had beef, carnitas, and chorizo tacos. All were amazing. The guacamole was perfection. The hot sauce was totally on point. Everything exceeded my expectations. Will definitely be back. . .I have relatives close by. The only disappointment was that they had already run out of "Al pastor" . . . I'll just have to go back and try those soon. Coming from a pure Mexican Family. Mexican food has always been something I took great pride in. Today as I came straight from work, I came across a rare restaurant that I haven't seen before Taqueria America; as someone's who loves being spontaneous, I decided to go ahead an enjoy the unexpected.... and let me tell you, it was unexpected. Straight of the bat, the door was so heavy to just open, it seemed as if I was going into a gym instead of a restaurant. Going in I was unsure if we had to wait for our server or go ahead an order. After waiting for a few minutes we asked the lady in the front what the deal was and as expected we had to wait. (Now here comes the unexpected) As we waited a few more minutes for our server to come and introduce himself, by my surprise it was an 11 year old kid, which I found kind of funny but unique and interesting at the same time.... and may I say this has to be the first restaurant that I have ever been where my server was younger than 16 and used a pen and napkin to take my order. It was so bizarre but at the same time so unique. This restaurant reminds me back to the time I went to Oaxaca Mexico in 2013. It gave me such a pure authentic vibe. The smell of the beef being cooked right in front of me, traditional ranchera playing on top of me, and oh yes I forgot- the bums drunk and out of their own sanity hiding corona under the table. I had such a nostalgic reflection, in which I felt like I was back home; reminiscing the time my uncle took my to his own restaurant. I ordered a dish called Torta Cubana. Which for me had to be one of the biggest tortas I have eaten in a while. It came fairly fast, and the sight of seeing it was satisfying. It wasn't the worst torta I ate but wasn't the best neither. The cheese wasn't melted enough and unfortunately no creamy avocado. However I must say it was pretty delicious, but it can vary for someone who is more picky (not me I eat everything and anything!!!). However this authentic Mexican inspired dish wasn't so inspiring at the end. It didn't feel the same, there was no day-altering richness that I was used to. I recommend Taquerias America for someone's who's looking for a quick meal. I definitely would not bring my family or my date here, but if I ever do get hungry and need something delicious and fast, then I would come to pick up and leave.(I'm also not sure if they deliver because if they do then that could be something I would be interested in). The only think I disliked was the inside, certainly not the fanciest and something a tourist would not find appealing but something maybe a local native might want to visit. I'm not as biased nor am I so negative. I would give it a 2/5, but the kid that was serving us just made my day, never seen someone so young and ambitious. Best Restaurant in Suffern. Clean, quality tacos for cheap. If you really know what's up, you'll try a torta. They'll put like a whole avocado on it, scooped from the shell, and fresh mozzarella which they barely melt. That's the best. The colder cheese in the warm sandwich with the fresh tomato and avocado, plus the verde salsa on top is the best. I'd try a bistec quesadilla too. The bistec is salty and amazing with the cheese. It's not fancy but rather more bare bones than anything else but let that not disuade you from walking in and ordering what has to be the best tacos you can get. Tacos are $2 each, with some of them being $2.50, but that's way cheaper than the overpriced and average tasting ones you can get in a place like NYC. The best ones by far are the pork skin(cueritos) and the pork head (cabeza), and I'd highly recommend! For 6 tacos and a drink, I paid $17, and left very satisfied and happy. "Hmm Taqueria America. Looks pretty ghetto. Must be good, let's go." That's what my brother said to me as we rode through downtown Suffern in search of a spot to eat. As it turns out, my brother was right. Taqueria America was indeed quite good. I ordered the torta de pierna (pork leg sandwich) while he opted to sample 4 different tacos: cueritos (pork skin), cabeza (pork head), chivo (goat), & orejas (pig ears). Luckily for me my brother's eyes were bigger than his stomach so I got to try each of his tacos. The torta was very tasty. It was served on a crusty white bread that soaked up the juices of the other ingredients while providing a satisfying crunch. The pork was almost shredded and tasted a bit like ham cold cuts but a lot better. I enjoyed the texture of it very much. There were a lot of other ingredients and my tongue is certainly not trained enough to discern them all, but believe me, they were very good. I did get some avocado and there was a good amount of chili peppers to provide some welcome heat. To top it all off there was a generous helping of cheese. I'd certainly have the sandwich again. The tacos were very delicious as well but I'd pass on the orejas if I were to come back. Now I do enjoy pig ears, but I was not a fan of the way these particular ones were prepared. I prefer my pig ears grilled or perhaps fried but these were cooked in such a way that they were chewy and cartilaginous. The taste was there but the texture was a miss. Now the other three tacos were major hits for me. My favorite would have to be a toss up between the cueritos and the cabeza but the chivo was still excellent. The chivo had a distinct flavor without being gamey as goat sometimes can be. The cabeza was nice and fatty. This kept the meat juicy and full of flavor. Now the cueritos were certainly something special. I had never had pork skin tacos up to this point and if they're normally this good it's a sin that I haven't. More places need to serve cueritos tacos. The way the skin was cooked reminded me of the Filipino dish sisig. It was just oozing with flavor and some crispyness here and there. All the tacos had a good amount of cilantro which I like, and the tortillas were par for the course. Overall the service was good and the place looked clean (albeit a bit bare). I just wish they served chips and salsa with your order. I wouldn't mind returning next time I'm in the area. read more

For what it is, this place is four stars. Not fancy but unbelievably fresh tacos. Staff very pleasant. Clientele mostly Hispanic as you would assume. If you are not Hispanic and a white American like me, do not hesitate to go try this place. Very friendly and accommodating. I don't speak Spanish and I have no problem ordering food. Don't expect guacamole made table side-this is not that kind of place. If you want to experience a true taqueria, this is the place! As an aside, this place is the epitome of the American dream. The guy who owns it started making tacos in the back of a grocery store down the block In what was basically a storeroom and then hand built this new place.
