This is the first time I've tried Ay Caray, despite living right around the corner! I ordered two regular tacos, one shredded chicken and the other Al pastor. The flavor is so delicious and they serve it with grilled jalapeños, sliced cucumbers, crisp radishes, grilled onions & fresh limes. Both were absolutely delicious!!! The value is incredible. This is me and my brothers go-to burrito spot close to home. Last time I came they just started the mural and came back today and they already finished it! (Looks so nice!) They changed up the seats and tables and looks a lot more modern. Love it! We ordered our usual - Al Pastor Super Burritos with a side of chips and salsa. My brother told me to tell y'all, "The chips are fresh, crunchy and salted perfectly." The lady at the front who took our order was also very kind and nice! Never any problems whenever we come here. Really good steak and eggs // huevos con carne. A little pricy, and the pricing on the menu was outdated. Still I got a really good breakfast and their refried beans are so good. But no salsa bar and only a roja was offered. Bummer- no beer! Burritos are about 1.75 lbs per. Lots of beans and rice. Generous cream and guac. Standard fresca. I would have preferred less filler and more protein (see cross cut photo). Quality and flavor on par for what you should expect from a bay area taqueria. New owners have redecorated and they have a new counter top, bar area and paint. Clean inside. Quick turnaround. Ordered a shrimp super burrito and it was a decent burrito, wasn't the best but it definitely hit the spot and is good compared to the other options in the area. The good: New ownership, the standoff-y guy that used to work there is no longer there. The place has been updated and has been semi-remodeled which is extremely nice and has a nice ambiance The bad: Burrito was ok, super wet inside though and the shrimp were a little bit over cooked. Nevertheless was a decent burrito. Glad the place has new ownership, will definitely try the rest of their menu. I purchased a $25 gift card for a friend. They went to use it and were told it would not be accepted. I am aware ownership changed, after my purchase, but I was under the impression it's the same family. The name is the same and the menu is the same. Not only am I embarrassed about giving a giftcard that the receiver could not use, but I have been a long time patron of this restaurant for many years, and I am disappointed that they couldn't make this work. Tried this spot today for lunch with the girls from work as they were picking up food for the office. As usual I like to try the taco salad at every taqueria spot then the tacos to see what their food is really like. So I ordered the taco salad of course. It was good, just wished there was more lettuce in it and the shell was a bit more crunchy. Other than that it was pretty good. Lot of rice and beans and was quite filling but also wished it would have had some more salsa or sauce period. I would still come back but prolly to try the tacos next time. They look wayy bigger than your average street tacos. & BTW according to all the girls in my office...... the steak and shrimp burrito is the best thang to order so m third time that's what I'll be having. read more

I have been coming here for over a decade. The burritos are always fresh, the tacos are always good and the beers are always cold. This is one of my "circuit" taqueria's. There are very few that can make the inner circle but this is definitely a reliable "go-to" spot for me. They have TV on the wall to watch sports and the salsa is made fresh. A friend recommended this place back in 20199 & I finally made it here yesterday. It is a casual no frills taqueria with friendly service, low prices, & friendly service. The super burreto with carnitas is the best with one of freshest tortillas; very warm & soft, cheese, rice, beans, salsa, sour cream, & tender marinaded carnitas. My mother enjoyed her super taco plate with carnidas, rice, beans, & salad. We will definitely be back to try more. Couple of things I get and love from this place (the only other taqueria I go to locally is Pancho Villa mind you): Shrimp Quesadilla *suiza style* (i.e. no sides, just tortilla, meat, cheese) Ceviche - A rare find in San Mateo Enchiladas con Pollo Verde Beware: salsa here is mui picante. It's not like Pancho Villa or other places, so if you don't have the stomach then ask for no salsa. Personally, I like it ;). Ceviche is outstanding... in fact all their fish is yum. Their ceviche is made from fish and camarones; no crab and is very spicy as well. You can call in your order for timed pick up $0.30 charge for using plastic. Free soccer games on tv ;D read more

Free homemade chips and salsa with any order! My friend and I made an impromptu stop at this shop on our way back to SF. This small and unassuming store is located in a supermarket plaza, but it's burritos were as good as some of ones I've had in SF's Mission. I got the jumbo burrito--after tax it came to under $11. It was definitely enough for two whole meals and came with guacamole, sour cream, and cheese--all that good stuff. Definitely worth stopping by if you're around, the plaza seems packed with other cool food spots to check out as well. read more

With any Mexican taqueria, it all hangs on the salsa. If you don't nail this, it's over. Ay Caray has a long way to go here. Not only does the chips/salsa come in kids-sized containers, but the recipe is simply mediocre. The salsa is spicy and has a general taste of fake tomatoes. It's likely they use a cheap tomato base. It's neither authentic nor tasty. Please improve! It's a small place featuring the red checkered table cloths and a soccer game playing in the corner. The super burrito was ok, but it took some time to come out. There was only one guy cooking for everyone in line. Also, the prices weren't that competitive with the Chipotles sprinkled in the area. You know it's bad when you walk into a taqueria on Cinco de Mayo and... it's almost empty. Yelpers have let me down. It happens sometimes, not often but, Ay Caray is one of those rare 'why does this place have so many 4 and 5 star reviews' places. The joint is in a strip mall and the only signs out front simply read 'taqueria'. We liked the pictures on the front window and had made our decisions by the time we got to the front desk. I got a chicken super burrito and my bf got camarones a la diabla. Burritos are pretty hard to mess up but amazing when done just right. My ginormous burrito was ok, nothing to write home about or go back for. Actually, it was pretty 'creamy' and loosely packed, making it hard to eat. My bf's shrimp were only ok, too. The shrimp was cooked well but small. The diabla sauce seemed creamy as well and wasn't spicy. Weird? Camerones a la diabla shouldn't be a creamy tomato base... By coincidence, later that night at a different joint, another friend ordered camerones a la diabla... which was great. Sometimes you don't realize how below average something really is unless you get a good comparison in the same time period. To make matters worse, they don't have a salsa bar. They have some radishes, chips and such but if you want salsa, you have to ask for it... and then they give you a lil bowl of it from behind the counter. I shouldn't have wasted my time with it though... it tasted like slightly textured ketchup. Not kidding... So, a Mexican restaurant that has barely ok food and bad salsa... wow, never going back. There are too many other options when it comes to taquerias. Won't see ya there. read more
