I'm done with Taqueria Chavez. Their food has gone downhill in recent years and it seems like they keep cutting back just to stay afloat. I went here yesterday for some chicken tacos and al pastor tacos (part of their Cinco de Mayo taco special at a reduced price of $1.75 each) and everything was bad. I couldn't pick up the tortillas because they fell apart so I had to eat my tacos with a fork. The chicken was dry and flavorless so I dumped the entire cup of hot sauce over everything. The al pastor was 90% orange grease and 10% rubbery meat. Their menu items used to be more customizable with toppings like tomatoes, different cheeses, different salsas/hot sauces, jalapenos, etc, but now what they consider "everything" is just diced onion and cilantro. Sometimes they let you have other toppings (the availability seems to vary from item to item) but most of the time you're stuck with onion and cilantro. They got rid of the fountain drinks so you can only get canned/bottled soda, water, or agua fresca. The touch screen menus at the drive thru have been gone for quite a while so you have to give your order to an employee directly. There is an additional fee if you want to pay by credit card so be prepared for that if you don't have cash. I'm disappointed in this place because I used to be a regular customer but there are much better options in town. Their food truck still floats around town and I don't know what happened to the plot of land out in Sonoma Ranch that was supposed to be the location of their second restaurant. Forget all the insipid nonsense you'll see in Google reviews. I'll tell you the real story. Today I checked in at Taqueria Chavez on Lohman Ave. The place is ok for quick, casual dining. Not much more. Their menu is kind of limited to tacos, tortas, and quesadillas. Their specialty appears to be Birria Tacos or Quesabirria when cheese is added. Birria Tacos are cooked up on the grill and have a crispiness to them and they tend to be a bit greasy. But, if done right they are delicious. Today I ordered their Quesabirria Tacos with consome (or consomme???) and an additional taco al pastor to see how that is. The service today was fine in a casual sort of way. They brought out a basket of chips with a salsa verde. The chips tasted ok but were very salty. Rate them a B-. The salsa verde was thick and highly pureed. Flavor-wise it was not very good. I am not a fan. Rate the salsa a big fat "D." I didn't consume much of it. The taco al pastor had a fair amount of meat and it wasn't too dry. The flavor was just ok. Nothing to write home about. The bit of sauce in a tiny plastic cup served along with it was fairly good. The four Quesabirria Tacos came with chopped onion and cilantro on the side along with a tiny cup of some kind of sauce and a bowl of their consome or consomme. I have to tell you folks, these people really know how to prepare the consome the right way. It was "not" oily like so many other restaurants make it and it was full of flavor. Rate it an "A." The Quesabirria Tacos were full of shredded meat and melted cheese. The taco shells were not too oily and the flavor was very good. When dipped in the outstanding consome these were great tasting tacos. Rate them an "A." I must also note, they put a little cup of some kind of sauce on the taco plate. I tasted a tiny bit with the end of my fork and it was nasty. What the hell was that? I re-capped it and tossed it. I would rate the dining experience at Taqueria Chavez around Three and a Half Stars but the Birria and Consome are so good I must rate it Four Stars for the overall dining experience. The Birria Tacos are a FIVE STAR production. Not everything served here is outstanding but most of the food is pretty good. The Birria Tacos and consome are top drawer. read more

When you're agitated because you're hungry but more furious because your food is straight up disgusting. Ps : if you're special is Al Pastor Tacos... please learn how to make it. All I had were fatty parts of the pork and they were huge chunks. I wouldn't even feed it to my dogs. They do not taste authentic how they use to be. The rice tastes stale and the flavor is odd. I've been seeing this taco spot and their quesadilla tacos on my IG feed for some time now and took a cruise out from El Paso to Las Cruces to finally give this place a try. My wife ordered the #1 deal which came with 4 tacos. She chose the carne asada tacos, with onion cilantro and a side of salsa. I ordered the #2 deal which came with 3 quesadilla and carne asada tacos, onions, cilantro, and salsa. Paired with a coca-cola, this was a perfect lunch time meal. We had to take the tacos to go, as it is drive thru only, during COVID, so we drove 10 minutes to Mesilla and ate at the town square. The tacos were very delicious, the meat seasoned just right, and the salsa was perfect. I could have easily eaten 3 more tacos. Can't wait to return to Las Cruces so I can try something else on the menu. read more

Taqueria Chavez is our goto taco place. Their tacos are always fresh and full of flavor. My son-in-law discovered the restaurant on his own exploring Las Cruces on a recent visit and ended up eating there every day. I highly recommend the birria tacos (they even have a keto version) as they are my favorite. It's been a challenge taking a picture of them because I haven't had the self control to not instantly dig in but I do have a picture of the tacos al pastor which are also great. We haven't eaten in the restaurant yet, but it's worth noting they have their own robot server that will bring your tacos to you. I look forward to checking it out in person because who doesn't want to eat tacos and pretend they're on the Starship Enterprise! read more

Portions are very large. So the $11 average price for stuff is "kinda" worth it. But the food is basic. Average even. Chicken enchiladas were pretty much cheese and lots of hot green sauce with several pieces of their taco chicken tossed on top. Rice was nasty for my taste. Reheated and super sticky. Refried beans were just that. Refried beans. Both the red and green sauces had super heat. Shrimp tacos were pricey for frozen little shrimps in a corn tortilla. They did pile on the shrimp. But they were still frozen little shrimps at one point. It was clean and the service was friendly and fast. The little salsa bar was nice. Complete with lime quarters and pico. Communal tables to sit at. Free soda refills. Aqua fresca flavors are very limited. And refills for dine in customers are a couple bucks. It says seafood on the door. But their seafood is mainly shrimp tacos or shrimp cocktail. They were out of ceviche when we went. They do have drive through. We're going back to try different dishes. Three years ago, I came to Las Cruces for the first time since moving to NM from Chicago. Without exception, when I asked where to eat, the locals said hitting up Taqueria Chavez was a must-do. It was excellent. Last week they transitioned from food truck to restaurant. On a road trip to El Paso today, we made the (less than a mile) slight detour to check out their new digs. The atmosphere was casual and clean with indoor and outdoor seating. They also have a drive through. The menu featured Mexican food including enchiladas, tostadas and tacos. In addition to the fountain drinks, they had agua frescas. Everything we ordered (quesadilla tacos de carne asada, quesadilla tacos de shrimp, shrimp tostadas, and cevicha along with horchatas and a limonada) was done perfectly. The shrimp tostada was the hands down favorite - even the teenager that "doesn't like shrimp" was won over. We were there after the main rush (3:00pm), and there was still a long line and wait. I attribute it to them getting their legs under them in this new space. Similarly, the shrimp tostadas came with the dregs of the tortilla chips, but when we saw that they had to make an unanticipated chips and tortilla run to stay on top of orders before the dinner rush, we understood. This is an average fast food Mexican restaurant that seems to be struggling recently . They installed a strange drive through touchscreen ordering device (obviously replacing an employee). Plan on spending 5 minutes ordering as you hang out your car window scrolling through the never ending options. Food quality is often forgettable. Just had a bland chicken burrito with chewy seemingly overcooked chicken. My advice- focus on creating higher quality food and a positive customer experience. read more

Went to Cruces to get my wife's Carne Asada fries and Saenz Gorditas. I've came in the past and they had no Carne Asada fries, strange for a restaurant not to have fries or Carne Asada. I attempted to use the screen menu which was ok but impractical for a drive-thru. Once I customized my wife's order there was no ADD for check out as I attempted twice. I attempted to get the ladies attention so she can take my order but she never came on. The wife told me to pull forward and order at the counter. Worst mistake, there was only ONE car in front of me and we waited 10-13min. We didn't even bother ordering. We moved back to EP from NC. This one time, I was waiting for my order outside when it was a Taco stand. A couple was talking to someone else and they said, "It seems that every time a Taco Stand gets a brick-and-mortar the quality of the food and service goes down". Pues Homie, multiple issues in the past. The long wait time for short foot traffic and poor service does it for me. What a fantastic find in Las Cruces cruising our way back to Texas. Taqueria Chavez does not disappoint and you will not leave here hungry. We had an assortment of tacos - chicken, al pastor with pineapple and asada. Tacos were filed very generously and came with two kinds of salsa, onion and cilantro on the side. All delicioso. Run by very friendly and helpful people. Restaurant was spotlessly clean. Sad that it will be a while before we pass through Las Cruces again to enjoy Taqueria Chavez. I'm a San Diegan . . I've been eating Taco shop and Truck food for 4 decades. I can make everything this truck makes at home. So my #1 gripe here was GREASE . . Everything was greasy beyond belief. My Tacos Al Pastor combo had literally a 1/4 cup of grease MORE than what was already soaking the tortillas in the bottom of the container. I dumped the meat into the beans and rice and tossed the grease soaked tortillas, which were also really tough, like they had been pre-fried once, then dipped in the fryer before the tacos were made. The burrito was also grease soaked, but slightly less so. It was still one of the greasiest burritos I've ever had, and just lacked any discernible flavor Meh - I've had better at a gas station in Redding, CA. Can't see myself coming back read more

From the reviews, it seems that this place struggled when it first opened a couple months ago. But not now... it's awesome. Been here twice & highly recommend. Our food was not greasy, service was super friendly and ALL of the meat in our tacos/ dishes were cooked n flavored perfectly. I hate greasy blah Mexican food, that unfortunately plagues Las Cruces. This is not that place. Check it out. The aqua frescas are a nice add too. Only down side was my drive thru drive was slow ~15 minutes. I got al pastor "quesadilla tacos" for my friend and he said they were delicious. I had emailed them a few days ago to ask if the beans and rice are vegetarian and today Gonzalo Chavez replied to say they are! No lard or chicken stock. The side order of beans does come with cheese, so make note if you're vegan. I had a veggie burrito today and it was PLENTIFUL. Tasted good, too. Friend also had the guacamole and pico de gallo side orders and said both tasted very fresh and flavorful. Overall I recommend this place. Nope. Not coming back. They changed their ordering system AGAIN and now they charge a fee if you want to pay by credit card. The fee goes up when you order more. The management say "thats how the system works" when asked about the fee. Coded language for "we do not care, pay us or leave". And they only accept exact change if you pay with cash otherwise they get really pissy. Who has exact change these days? I do not think this is a coincidence that they impose a credit fee and then make it difficult for us to pay with cash.
