Was craving dessert so we just came here to get some churros. For some reason it took forever to get an ice cream and churros around 9pm. I'm pretty sure we waited 30 minutes total. It seemed like a busy night but the kitchen staff seemed to just be moving very slowly. I think they could have easily fulfilled our order and gotten us out of there in 10 mins so we weren't just sitting around watching them. They gave me my horchata right away, so I was just sipping on that as we waited. I forgot to get a photo of the churros but they were alright. Definitely freshly made, but not the best churros I've had. They were crunchy and you can taste the oil/fried flavor on them. The horchata was really good! When I heard they were going to open up again, I knew I wasn't going to miss out again. We arrived here for an early Sunday lunch. The place was still empty, not sure how busy they get, but let's just say we got in before the crowd. I ordered their Al Pastor Taco and their Skirt Steak Taco. These tacos definitely aren't cheap. The al pastor was $5 and the skirt steak was $7. Street tacos used to be around $2-$3 per taco. So when they're charging $7 for one damn taco, it better but one of the best tacos you've ever had. And that's exactly what these mfers delivered. A near perfect taco worth every penny. The skirt steak was perfectly marinated and perfectly cooked. It was so tender and juicy and came with avocado mousse and a chimichurri sauce that just complemented every bite so perfectly. I will definitely be returning very sook for this taco. I have been getting tacos for years and thought I had already found "the best." Turns out I was wrong. I stopped by Taqueria Chingón in Fulton Market, grabbed a seat outside, and ordered two steak tacos with just cilantro and onions because that's how a proper taco should come. No distractions. No unnecessary extras. Just taco. When I tell you those tacos changed my mood instantly, I'm not exaggerating. The steak was perfectly seasoned, juicy, and packed with flavor. I don't know who's back there cooking, but they deserve a raise and maybe a hug. The tacos were so good that I came back the very next day. Not next week. Not later that month. The next day. That's how serious this got. I also happened to catch happy hour, which made the experience even better because half priced drinks and amazing tacos are a dangerous combination for my wallet and my self control. The staff was awesome. Special shoutout to the hostess who was there both times I visited. She was super friendly, welcoming, and just had great energy. Taqueria Chingon is about as amazing as it is expensive. I had the absolute pleasure of trying the Al Pastor, Gobernador Shrimp, and Duck Carnitas. Overarching themes were of unique, well-thought-out combinations, freshly cooked proteins that were neither skimped on, nor from a hotel pan, and all ingredients in balance. Duck Carnitas - Out-of-this-world fantastic. The duck was tender and just the right amount of roasty. The veggies gave the perfect amount of freshness and brightness. Tying everything together was a delectable, gently sweet and savory sauce. I have a close friend who loves tacos, but doesn't eat any cute animals - and it's a real shame. Gobernador Shrimp - I was initially on the fence about ordering this. I saw in the photos what looked like a cigar of... something - no cause for alarm, it is just grilled cheese. The savory and oily notes of the cheese and a hearty amount of shrimp, combined with a rich, dark, and smoky salsa negra, some avocado, and some veg for earthiness. Al Pastor - This was slightly less spectacular than its colleagues. I loved the roasty, Maillard notes of the pork, and appreciate that pork is almost impossible to get moist and tender. That said, it did come off as a hair on the dry side. It's not all doom and gloom though, the pineapple added tropical brightness and sweetness, with the onion some fresh crunch! Salvation was found in the provided sauces and lime. A small hit of this and that, and the taco is saved without reinvesting it into something new. Now, for the prices: My tacos cost $9, $8, and $6, respectively. For tacos, there is no denying that is expensive, and arguably overpriced. Part of this goes to the area, Michelin Guide's Bib Gourmand, and the state of the world [gestures vaguely and wildly at everything]. However, in return one gets tacos that are well assembled, unique, interesting, and with proteins that are made to order, instead of in bulk and kept warm. When it comes to their vibe, it was bright and modern, with stone and wood notes. There is also a large, colorful, inviting mural on the wall. My quibble is with the music - considering there were three patrons in the restaurant including myself, it was louder than it needed to be. As for the service, the food came out in a reasonable time considering the freshness of the ingredients. The staff I ordered with was friendly, too. Final verdict: Taco cravings come in different flavors (pun intended). Sometimes, Taco Bell gets the job done, other times, it's the mom-and-pop-shop down the street for something a little more elevated. Looking for a New Mexican spot by me and this is fantastic! Very quick, placed my order and picked it up within 15 minutes. Very cute place too! Meant for a quick bite. It is on the pricier side but it is worth it. I got a passion fruit mango fresca to drink and this was sooo refreshing and full of flavor. I am obsessed with this drink. We started with chips and queso. The chips are on the smaller portion side. For two people I would recommend getting 2 orders of chips! I loved the queso. The duck carnitas taco was definitely interesting and different from the usual, and the huitlacoche quesadilla was delicious -- probably my favorite thing we ordered. That said, while the food was creative and well executed, the pricing made it feel a little more like a "fun occasional visit" rather than somewhere I'd find myself craving and returning to regularly. I went to the bucktown location a few times before it closed and this was my first time at the newly opened west loop location! Tacos were great as usual. I got the duck carnitas and governador, which was a bit different than i remembered. On Tuesdays they have a deal of 2 tacos, rice and beans, a drink, and churros for about $21 which was a great deal! The beans/ rice was a small portion, but the churros were huge and very airy and fresh. I just wish they served them with chocolate instead of icing. Extremely disappointed with my visit last night. I've been raving about this place to my friends, family, and coworkers ever since my first visit, and we come here often. Unfortunately, last night's experience was unacceptable. 1. They were out of both Palomas and Mojitos. 2. Trying to place our order was a headache. The employee was rude when I asked to split the tacos by person. 3. The asada taco was nothing like what I've come to expect. It didn't have the handmade tortilla it usually comes with, and it was extremely greasy--so much so that grease was dripping everywhere. I've never been served a taco like that here before. I'm also pretty sure the price of the asada taco has increased. 4. The flour tortilla on my shrimp taco was cold and flaky. I had to return it and ask for a replacement. 5. The new layout and dim lighting were disappointing. I preferred the brighter atmosphere they had before. 6. The water station is gone. 7. We finished our entire meal before our drinks arrived. I had to go up and ask twice about our two non-alcoholic beverages. Were they overwhelmed? Maybe. But that seems unlikely considering there were only a few occupied tables. Was it a bad day? Definitely. If I could rate my experience from last night zero stars, I would. When you're paying top dollar for tacos, the food and service should reflect that. We order uber eats all the time, this is a must if you live in Chicago. Wednesdays the crunch wrap supreme dupe. My husband exclaimed "this is the best thing I've ever eaten." For context, he never says this and usually has nothing to say about his food other than "pretty good." The tacos all slap and the quality protein is appreciated.
