Not wanting to wait too long, we decided to give Taqueria El Viejon a try instead. The ambiance is your typical hole-in-the-wall taco spot--nothing fancy, but that's usually where you find some solid tacos. When we walked in around 7:00pm, it honestly looked like they were about to close. Chairs were already up and the floors looked freshly cleaned. My husband asked if they were still open, and they said yes, so we decided to stay. We ordered a mulita, some street tacos, and a quesadilla. The mulita was exactly how I like it--simple, crispy, and satisfying. The street tacos were good, and the quesadilla also hit the spot. I ordered five tacos, choosing Tripas, Buche, and Cabeza for the meats--my favorites! I had the Tripas and Buche cooked a bit crispy, just the way I like them. Since they tend to be a bit greasy, I added lime and salsa to cut down the oiliness and add some heat. I also loved that the tacos came with chiles toreados (blistered Serrano peppers), which gave them the perfect kick of spice I was looking for. They had a complimentary salsa and side bar with radishes, carrots, limes, and salsa. I personally preferred the green salsa over the dark red one, though I wish both had been a bit spicier. I appreciated how fresh the ingredients were, unlike at some places where the sides sit out too long and start to turn brown. Each taco was $1.95, though I believe there's a slight upcharge for tripa and lengua tacos. There was plenty of parking in the shared lot with a smoke shop and a dentist. We visited on a Sunday afternoon and found only a few other customers there. The chef and staff were incredibly friendly and welcoming, and the restaurant had a clean, family-friendly ambiance. Ran across this little place while searching for some Mexican food in the area. Landed here because others we were going to try were packed, and in hindsight I'm so thankful! My husband said the pastor tacos were "heaven" and the best he's ever had - he also raved about how flavorful the asada was. I had a chicken burrito that was pretty standard. The green salsa that came with the chips we ordered had good heat to it and was delicious (different from the green salsa in the salsa bar - and by far better). Inside is small, but clean. Customer service was friendly and welcoming, with the chef and waitress both greeting us as soon as we walked in. My husband says he'd come back for the pastor alone. My $13 machaca breakfast burrito had almost no egg but did contain plenty of delicious (if a bit dry) carnitas, beans and rice. I wouldn't order a breakfast burrito here again but I would come back for tacos or huaraches. To me, a breakfast burrito's main ingredient must be egg. Also they have a big sign that says breakfast burritos are 10.44 but it rang up as 12.00. I asked about it but the lady politely said that's an old sign. Hmph! On Tuesday March 17th my husband and I walked into this place to order some tacos, once we arrived to our apartment (we live very close to this disgusting restaurant) we realized the meat was bad. We took 1 bite from 1 of the tacos to realize the meat was bad. My husband drove back and asked for a refund, the lady and guy that were there got offended and refused to give a refund even though we paid in cash. They took the food back and threw it away and gave us no refund. My husband reached out to the owner through their business account on instagram and the owner proceeded to message my husband from his own personal instagram account NOT the business one and harass my husband, calling my husband a "broke person" and threatening us that he has our personal information. My husband showed up to the place to speak with them and figure out why the owner thought it was a good idea to message him and harass him. The owner then called 911 and made a false statement saying my husband was there to commit a robbery. Because of his dumb 911 FALSE call - my husband spent 5 hours in jail. We're in the process of suing them so they don't do this shit to anybody else!! So disgusting! read more

I've been coming to Taqueria El Viejon for over 3 years now and they are AMAZING! It's a family owned shop, and they work SO hard to ensure high quality food and top notch service. The space is super clean and comfortable, and we've always enjoyed our meals here. Our favorite thing to order is the cabeza tacos -- soo good. Their horchata and jamaica is also delicious. My husband and I took a trip to Mexico, and when we were eating tacos there, we kept comparing them to Taqueria El Viejon -- it didn't compare! Taqueria El Viejon is our standard!!!! This spot is a little hole in the wall. My boyfriend and I were in the area and stumbled across this family-owned restaurant. From the moment we walked in, we were warmly greeted by both the cashier and chef. The service is great and the menu is very reasonable! $2.15 for tacos is great, especially in this economy. Sunday evening, 530PM, 2 hours before closing time at 730PM. Not too crowded. Couple of customers eating and waiting for their orders. The jams are coming from a great sound system in the back; the bass is sounding nice. It's pretty clean inside. Tables wiped down, floors clean, self serve salsa station isn't dirty like some other taco spots. We order a good dozen tacos: carnitas & chicken, with cilantro only. Stocked up on some salsas from the self serve station and took them home to pair with our weekly Sunday tv show. The carnitas tasted better than the chicken. I wasn't expecting caramelized onions, but hey, just remove them and eat on. Green salsa was clearly a winner for me. Red salsa had some flavor but lacked spice. Green salsa wasn't the best salsa I've had, but the spice it had paired with lemon, made my tacos even better. For less than $2 a taco, that's really not that bad. Great deal. read more

Service was speedy, food was prepared to-order so it was super fresh, and the turnaround time to receive our meal was lightening fast with accuracy and deliciousness. We ordered various tacos: asada, al pastor, and chicken. All of the tacos were loaded with meat and their respective fixings. The meat was tender, not greasy, and so tasty. We also placed an order of Asada fries to share. Loaded with asada, cheese, and beans fixed atop fresh cut fries; this dish was a dream! (We opted for no sour cream and for the salsa on the side.) Again, very fresh and not overly greasy. I highly recommend anything we ate as it was of good quality and definitely priced extremely fair. Definitely an affordable and delicious meal. As noted, Taqueria El Viejon is tucked away along State College Boulevard. They have their own private, free parking lot for patrons so it shouldn't be difficult to stop in. It was a very strong grilled onion flavor and it was nice and sweet. The asada fries were really delicious, I like that they used fresh fries, not those frozen fries from the freezer. Staff here is soooo nice. Plus this place is very clean and unlike a lot of taco places, the lines in their salsa bar are fresh and ripe! (Not brown and rancid from sitting) I got a bunch of tacos de Asada, Carnitas, Pollo, and Pastor. They were all good, they put a lot of meat, and it tasted super fresh. One thing to note- the meat was under salted -- however, they include salt, so I think they do it on purpose, which is good for those that need to reduce their sodium intake or are sensitive to salt. Also quick note to anyone who works in food- it's a lot easier to upsell when you're being nice. I felt all warm and fuzzy and genuinely taken care of. It seems like the staff actually wants to be here. I was so thrown off guard that when the cashier said, "no drink?" I was like you know what? Screw it, gimme a horchata. And it was gooood. I never get drinks but the cashier was so warm, patient and welcoming, I was like, you know what? Add a drink! You put me in a good mood. It's not as tourist heavy as Mission St. in SF and more unknown which I like a lot. For a place like El Viejon to stand with the greats in this highly competitive area is a testament to their bar-setting quality and taste. What about our order made El Viejon so great? Asada Mulitas: the Tortilla is the greatest Transformer ever made. It transforms from a pale and tasteless looking tortilla to Mexico-level when you take a bite. The secret is it's housemade and perfectly cooked. After you eat it you'll realize how dried out most other tortillas are, there is a very desirable soft chewiness like al dente pasta that made it superior. Other places can take premium cuts of steak and throw them into a taco and it will taste good, magic happens when prep and cooking transform the "cheap" traditional asada cuts into meaty, aromatic, tender goodness. Asada from El Viejon did this expertly, it's rare for asada to get me to keep saying "it's so f'n good" and then lay down and close my eyes after I'm done to think about how good it was. All-Meat Taco: I've never seen this before but you have the option to have "every" meat thrown onto a taco. I thought it might be too crazy but I could distinctly taste the chicken, al pastor, carnitas, asada, etc... each of them providing its own unique texture and flavor. Always knew this place existed, but never really had any reason to check it out until I noticed that they have the best Taco Tuesday deals I've seen in the area. $1.30/taco as of 10/4/2022! In April it was $1.25 and awhile back it was just a BUCK. But you know, inflation and all. Anyway, $14 for 10 tacos was a pretty great deal considering the Taco Tuesdays in the area are at least a couple bucks, if not more. The tacos here aren't quite as good as the competitors in the area, but still definitely some solid tacos (especially for a buck thirty)! Everything was pretty good, but the cabeza was actually REALLY good here. Fatty, but still with a chew and meat to it as opposed to just squishy, pasty, and fat. Typing this made me want to chow down on a TON of tacos. The sauces were the weakest part. Not awful, but also not that good either, but added a nice freshness to every bite.
