That isn't to say that the offerings here were dirt cheap but rather that I didn't feel like the food hall setting was a license to jack up prices. Union Grove boasts a respectable variety of vendors for its size, and the offerings range from Cajun to Asian to pizza and wings and more. I opted for the ironically named Health Camp, the Woodway outpost of a longstanding Waco burger-and-shake joint. While the shake selections looked tempting, I limited myself to a Health Burger (cheeseburger), tots, and a drink. At the risk of drawing pitchforks, the burger was a bit underwhelming. It was a fast food style single patty, very thin, and though tasty enough when dressed (lettuce, tomato, mustard, ketchup), not really worth $7. I realize that for locals, nostalgia is a powerful lure (Greensboro's Beef-Burger had similar adherents), but if you didn't grow up with Health Camp's burgers, I'd have to believe that you could do better. To their credit, the tots were perfectly crisp and priced right. One final note: Union Grove has plenty of seating, but it can also get rather loud. There's an adjoining arcade, so expect kids running around. If the acoustics don't bother you, however, then the warehouse atmosphere can be fun.

It has a specialty coffee, Boba place, it has a Tokyo restaurant with sushi and other specialties, it has dim sum restaurant, and then in the back it has the most amazing hot pot I've had in recent years. My favorite thing about the hot pot is that everybody gets their own individual pot, and there are many different kinds of broth to choose from everything from a miso base, to a Tom ka base, to a laska base. They even have one that is super spicy. It's basically one price for hot, and you can choose as much meat, pork beef. What have you or you can go back and get a lot of the vegetables, they have noodles they have so many different traditional hot pot additives they even have spices so you can change the broth the way you want it and they have sauces that you can dip your meat in after you've cooked them in the pot, and many different varieties of those. They even have traditional desserts that are part of the menu. I am definitely going back. Such a cute space. Also by the way, let me mention how nice the service people were there, they were so helpful, instructive, really made the experience awesome. You must come and experience it yourself.

One area that remains the same is the area surrounding the movie theater. I remember my first theater experience here watching the motion picture Aladdin. I'm glad the mall remains open and has kept some of its original charm. Sadly, many malls are having a hard time staying afloat. During my two hour visit, I experienced quite a bit. First I'll start with the least enjoyable parts. When I first walked in, I immediately noticed a woman at the lower-level sports bar and grill wearing a thong and a shirt. Not a short skirt, like her coworker only a thong. It's definitely not what I expected to see after returning for the first time in five years. She quickly moved out of view when she noticed my reaction, but it still left a strong first impression. As I headed up the escalator, I was approached by staff from La Perla handing out menus and trying to guide me into their restaurant. The same thing happened as I walked through the food court. I wouldn't call it a bad experience, but it did feel a bit overwhelming as my first encounter upon entering the upper-level of the mall. From my experience working in a mall, I've noticed food court staff often offer samples, which I think is a more inviting way to attract customers. A small taste can go a long way, when a restaurant wants to acquire new customers and grow their clientele. I read reviews regarding the food court establishments beforehand, and many mentioned rude service, overpriced and subpar food. It would have been nice to try good authentic Mexican cuisine rather than the usual Tex-Mex I tend to eat. I did stop by Mr. Churro, where I enjoyed a cup of ice cream fully loaded with toppings of my choice. Next, while shopping at Burlington and Ross, I noticed loss prevention stationed at the entrances. Having my bag checked and showing my receipt felt a bit uncomfortable, but I understand it's become a common practice to prevent stealing. Another unexpected moment happened while I was shopping. A young toddler suddenly balled up his fist hitting my shopping bag like it was a punching bag. His mother told him to stop but didn't apologize. Later, I saw him hitting his mother repeatedly while she did nothing to correct the behavior, which was uncomfortable to witness. On a more positive note, I really enjoyed the vibrant cultural atmosphere of the plaza. The beautiful quinceañera dresses, crowns, bouquets, and accessories are stunning. The cowboy boots, hats, and western attire also stood out to me. There's a center stage for performances, a creatively designed Dino plaza, and several eye catching displays that make for great photo opportunities. Overall, I had a great time and would come back on a weekday when it's less crowded to enjoy the many food court options and shops.
