Just an honest taqueria. Just a place you'd find anywhere in California. Yet just such a place is not easily found in Berkeley. On San Pablo in the westside you get the Afghan/Mexican mashup - flavor bombs encased in flour tortillas - good food, but not the classic Cal-Mex. There are also such atrocities as Cactus and Gordo, both on College Ave (you should probably hesitate before dining on College Ave., where the food tends to be bland and overpriced). The worst mistake would be having yourself lured in by the Ashby Eatery, a block down Ashby Ave from La Familia. Find yourself forking out fifteen quid for a vegan burrito. La Familia, although the girls in the back likely hail from Oaxaca, the menu is decidedly Cal-Mex. Tacos dorados, enchilada combo plates; shredded white and yellow cheese melted atop both. Burritos are in the lineage of the SF Mission style. You want to steer away from their carne asada as you will find no evidence that it had been grilled. It tastes none too much of fire. Thus, you want to steer towards the carnitas. While it is less like the complex Michoacanense carnitas and basically confited pork should, it is still delicious. On the wall is one of the area's great murals. A pre-Columbian village scene being watched over by a giantess whose either pregnant with octuplets or has just eaten several combo plates, her belly is so distended; and a Mexican eagle. read more

Longtime family business, withstood the Covid upheaval and deserves our support. They fight to keep their prices down--though no one can do that easily these days. A well deserved upgrade from my previous 3 star review! I've been back a few times recently and the food is seriously hittin'! I love giving places a second chance and then being wowed afterward. La Familia has officially become my go-to Berkeley taqueria. First of all, the prices are so damn reasonable! I'm sorry, but I'm sick and tired of seeing these $20 burrito and combo plates with no flavor and no authenticity. I know that times have changed and things are just more expensive overall, but I feel like the quality isn't always there. La Familia delivers with quality AND price. AND... the portions are equally satisfying. I never leave here feeling hangry. If anything, I'm always full and overstuffing myself trying to finish my plate. I recently had the flautas (haven't posted the pictures yet, but oooh they're comin'!). When I tell you that they were so damn delicious. Crunchy and filled with the tenderest chicken meat. Topped with all of the good stuff and accompanied by a healthy serving of beans and rice. Just yum! The chips and salsa be smackin' too. But lemme tell you somethin' about them nachos, bruh! Those damn nachos are the BIDNESS baby! I don't even really mess with nachos all like that, but for THESE nachos?! Your girl might do some dangerous thangs for those. Just cheesy and crispy... I literally took the leftovers home and put them in my airfryer to revive them and eat the rest. I mean, who does that shiii?! Me! And you probably would too if you tried them. The FOOD is delicious here. There's no doubt about that. The staff is hard working and the lady at the ordering counter is kind and efficient. She doesn't speak the most fluent of English, but she definitely knows what she's doing. Just honest and hardworking people. This place has a huge following too. Taqueria La Familia is a great no frills, family-run, affordable Mexican spot. I've been coming here for years and haven't had any complaints. I mostly stick with their burritos, but I recently went with a bistec plate. The meat was flavorful and the sauce was really good. I feel like La Familia offers solid food at a reasonable price point. Great if you're looking for something on the go and just want to call ahead. I recommend checking them out. Both my husband and I work full time, we had a 3 year old at home for 6 months until he went back to preschool and most days we're just too tired to cook. You order and paid electronically. The restaurant was small, neat, and clean. I sat at a table while waiting for my to go carne asada burrito. It's a small family owned business that really caters to all customers. They always remember you and always greet you with a smile. The ladies in my office were doing a lunch run to this taqueria. I got 3 crunchy stake tacos. It comes with lettuce, meat, sour cream, guacamole, and cheese sprinkled on top with a side of chips. I also had some horchata. The tacos were a good size (sorry I didn't get a picture of them) but they were not as flavorful as I would have expected (I guess you can call me spoiled. I live in a Mexican food capital). Literally, the WORST tacos I have ever tried. If my job wasn't up the street I wouldn't have tried it. The tacos were dry. They came with cheese but barely a sprinkle. I'm assuming to make you pay for "extra cheese", and they came with lettuce and tomato which wasn't typical but I figured I'd give it a shot. Bad choice. It was expensive and NOT worth it. My daughter got carne asada tacos that had dry, under seasoned meat. She hated them. The beans weren't good either and it's hard to mess up refried beans and rice. My go-to takeout place whenever I'm craving enchiladas! I always order the Enchiladas Suizas with Chicken. It comes with beans (I choose refried hehe), rice, and chips. They say it's a "small side of chips" but I think it's the perfect amount! It also comes with red and green salsa -- the red is my favorite! Service is good and fast: I can order for pick-up and it will be ready in the time it takes me to drive there (less than 15 min)! Parking: Parking varies.
