Amazing food I get it all of the time very authentic and clean it definitely is a hidden gem

Was in the area with some family. And it was dinner time and I was in the mood for some food. Never been here and didn't think to come here everytime I've been near it until last night. I was walking nearby and a group of guys passed me and walked inside. And for some reason at that particular time in the moment In that very second it hit me. Go check it out. Let me tell you all I'm glad I did. I went in scoped the place out thinking get something. Try it out, yelp it. I watched the guys order these soup bowls and I looked at the menu above behind the ordering station with the cashier. They guys ordered soup dinners instead of burritos or tacos I thought, ok must be good I was thinking. It looked very authentic on the menu. I walked up and wanted to try something simple and small not a soup yet had to peak my interest with the taste buds ya know what I'm saying. So I was wanting a burrito, I asked the cashier gentleman questions what goes inside, how is it, what's it come with like sides and all. He told me asked me what meat I wanted for the burrito I was ordering, I said ground beef, he said they don't have that, closest thing would be the steak. I'm not going to lie when I heard no ground beef I was going to say cancel on my order and I was going to leave. I was upset, hearing no ground beef as an option. But I stood there with the thought get the steak option that he offered, do it. Just do it. Say it. And I did, I kept the ordering going. I ordered the steak meat especial burrito. And omg it was fantastic! I fell in love with this place. I definitely recommend this place. If you ever walk into a restaurant and are not up for taking chances, well screw that, break the boundaries take the extra step surprise yourself. Best burrious tacos ever! Delicious food I love this place. Best Mexican food ever. Don't eat anywhere else

Rainy day today so I was craving some pozole. I had to stop at my favorite place. Was surprised to see that they updated the paint job, definitely looks a lot better now. Love the vibrant colors. Carne asada tacos are still bomb and they still have the best pozole ever! Ask for the handmade tortillas for the tacos because it definitely makes a difference. It's a bit more for the handmade tortillas but it's worth it. read more

Got chicken and steak tacos and one pork and cheese pupusa! Service was great, and the tacos were amazing! Unfortunately the pupusa was salty and wasn't able to eat it. Maybe it was the type of cheese they used but other than that I had a great experience and enjoyed their homemade hot sauces. We would definitely go back if I'm in the area again! read more

While the dining area wasn't the cleanest, with some tables still having food particles on them, it was still relatively comfortable and had a cozy atmosphere. However, I have to admit that I was a bit disappointed with the lack of flavor in the food. Although the presentation was appealing and the portions were generous, the taste didn't quite measure up to my expectations. The staff was very friendly and accommodating, and the service was prompt and efficient. Maybe the regular cook was off that night. read more

Words cannot explain how FANTASTIC the food is here. It's a hole in the wall and food took a while to be made...but when it was done it was hot and fresh. Worth the wait! Will be making up excuses to drive by Culpeper just to eat here again. read more

The food is definitely authentic and delicious! The only issue I had was that it does take a while to receive your food. The issue may be lacking staff as I noticed that the cashier that took your order was the same person cooking and calling pick up orders. Went for a quick lunch while passing by Culpeper and ended up behind a little over an hour for only tacos. read more

This is a hidden gem! We are not locals just passing by our family was very hungry and just googled Taqueria. At first we couldn't find the place. Once we saw it and saw the people working there we knew it was going to be good. Didn't take any pictures because we devoured everything lol. We had tacos Pupusas and posole. Oh and the flan was just like my grandmas. Great place totally recommend!!! read more

Delicious food! The most authentic Mexican food I've found since moving to Virginia. Staff was very friendly and the hot sauce is amazing!

The service was great, the cashier was Bilingual and knew the menu well! The food itself was absolutely phenomenal the veggies were crisp and fresh, and the tortilla tasted homemade! I really loved the beef tongue tacos, and the Barbacoa was a perfect finisher to two beef tongue tacos, and an Al pastor taco. The Pupusa made a great appetizer, and the hot sauce was amazing. The restaurant's atmosphere was very relaxed and hospitable. Great food, Great place, will definitely try again. read more

Pretty great food here. It's all in Spanish, so if you don't speak it, there are pictures and people able to help you. I had the Cuban, my buddies got the fajita. All were great and the sauces available are awesome too. We tried the tamatillo, and the jalapeño versions, which the jalp version what decently hot. The Cubano: It was a chicken breast, piece of ham,eggs/chorizo, flank steak wrapping pulled pork and cheese, and a jalapeño tomato lettuce, with multiple layers of cheese. Mayo spread on the toasted bun. A hot jalapeño salsa sauce added for flavor. It was so good and I only ate half. Cost 9.99$. Total bliss. My friends liked their fajitas too. The establishment itself is nice as well. Bathrooms and facilities seemed clean as well. read more

Never 'get settled' into your favorite restaurant routine. Then you miss out on other treats in town. I've yet to have had a bad Mexican meal in Culpeper, and Tapatia doesn't disappoint. First time, I had the two pupusas with a lengua taco on the side. Nice, homestyle, plenty of filling. They have three homemade salsas, had the mild with the taco. Better than other places, definite 4.5. Yesterday, it was tacos dorados and a side lengua/tripe taco. Good place to point out that the only other place I tried tripe (some joint in Woodbridge, where I spit out the food). Here, it was cooked just right. Still spoiled with lengua, now I know not to be wary of tripe. As to the Dorados, yum. Deep fried golden(), covered with queso and lettuce, good portion of rice and beans. Used the hot salsa on this. If you want hot, you get hot! The medium is a guacamole based salsa which must have been good, my daughter scraped it out of the cup. Decor is family joint style, the walls covered in customer graffiti praising the restaurant. Prices are spot on for the area. Overall, don't get complacent with Pancho's or Jarapejo's - your tastebuds will miss out. read more

One must be cautious when there is only 1 review and it is 5 stars. I also believe finding good Mexican food in this part of Virginia is a difficult mission. Tucson has got me spoiled. We were the only customers. Drink machine had no ice. Pop tasted strange. I ordered a bean burrito and got one wrapped in foil that had no tomatoes or onions or salsa!!! We also got no chips and no salsa. My dining partner ordered a cheese enchilada and what arrived was basically a blob of cheese. She ate my bean burrito and I was happy to let that happen. They had the TV playing at an absolutely deafening level....Very off putting. read more

Found this place randomly in a shopping center while I was in Culpeper, which ended up becoming a great choice. I got the carne asada and a few tacos. The meat was so tasty and sliced thin. Loved the flavor it had and also came with two large pieces with rice, beans, and some veggies on the side. The only thing that would've made my food easier to eat was if they had stronger cutlery, the plastic was not very strong for my carne asada dish. They also have fresh juice that tasted great! Recommended not getting ice in it since it was already cold and the amount of ice they add is a bit much. My friends and I wanted to write on their wall, since it seemed as though people could write and draw some fun graphics or things they thought about the food. However the young lady at the register didn't seem to want/ allow us to use the pen to do what others have done. Another small note that I have was about the trash can, I am fine with cleaning up after myself however there wasn't a place to put the cups or plates separately from the trays so I had to lift about 4 other trays, plates, and cups, just to put mine under. A recommendation for them on this would be to follow a tray and plates system like Panera. read more

On a return from Busch Gardens we took a route that kept us from the main congestion of Washington and Richmond this finding ourselves In Culpeper VA. Looking for a Mexican restaurant we stumbled across this delightful delicious restaurant. Like other reviews mention, the decor and the surroundings is not what someone should judge this place by. At the heart of it, it's the food, and the food here is fantastic. Everything I had was tasty and some of my meal was the best I ever had, like the flan. Oooooh the flan is a must have. So rich and creamy it is almost like cheesecake! Next fav was the watermelon aquas frescas. It was especially delicious! Most likely there are different flavors each day, and if you happen to be blessed like me, watermelon will be in season, so you will be able to buy the watermelon aquas frescas. For my meal I had one carnitas sope, one pork and cheese papusa and a side of beans and rice. A great variety of sauces will top your meal perfectly. If I'm ever back in the area I will make sure to eat here again. I recommend stopping and giving it a try today! read more

So went here for the first time today. I have to say the only reason I gave it three stars is the interior and service style. The rating is not a reflection of the food at all. I got two different tacos. They aren't served like your Americanized tacos, with cheese and sour cream and all that, they are served just with onions and cilantro and you can ask for red or green sauce... so if American tacos are what you like just brace yourself for a different style. You can ask for sour cream I'm sure but I would recommend trying it without first. Their flavors are amazing.... the pork was tender, full of flavor, a hint of sweetness... the beef was equally tender. I got a tamale to try, that was great too. And my friend who was introducing me to this place ordered the guacamole and chips for us to try it. I like avocados but I'm often picky when it comes to guac. It was great. The onions weren't over powering, it was spicy without punching you in the mouth... I do wish they would have served it in a bowl, as it's a bit hard to scoop off a plate when there's a mound of chips surrounding it precariously poised to tip off the edge lol I also ordered the chicken soup. I could t begin to remember exactly what it was called, but the guy said it basically means her soup. I was curious, as I have this thing with chicken soup... when I see it I order it if I haven't tried it. I was expecting a little bowl of soup...no. this was a huge bowl, and the soup came with flavorful rice, thick tortilla shells... probably called something else, but they are delicious... also came with lime cilantro and onion. IN the soup was carrots, green beans, yuca, the broth of course and pieces of chicken. So I'm guessing that the hen part is like meant for stewing chicken? Basically a chicken that's meant to be used for flavor and long cooking. I'm not sure. The meat was good but not exactly.. like not plump juicy falling g off the bone.. I feel it was more there for flavor... and the flavor was.... amazing.. like honestly ove never had a chicken soup from a restaurant that I was excited about, and I've tried a lot, bit I regretted that I didn't get this soup until I was done eating... because man.. it was just so good... made me want to try the rest of their soups... I will be going back, probably frequently... Now let's talk about the down sides you should be ready for... It's like... cafeteria style sort of.. you order then they give a number and you go pick your tray up when they call. They don't call the number very loudly so you have to really listen. They aren't like... million people staffed, so they are a bit slow, which was OK we weren't in A hurry. Would be problematic if we were looking for a quick lunch. The drinks they give inside are fountain that you fill yourself, but they are inside glasses, not to go cups, with lids... I'm clumsy... if I have to get my own drink I want to be able to lid it... There was writing allllllllll over the walls which is kind of neat but there seemed to be quite a bit of scripture... just not my cup of tea while I'm eating out. And it looks like they let the customers do it, which is both cool, and strange. I'm not sure if I'm into that aspect of the decor or not yet. I wouldn't want to bring a client there, but I wouldn't mind bringing friends. The last complaint... is the menu. There aren't a lot of descriptions... there are pictures where you order, overhead, but no descriptions on the menu, and I don't speak Spanish so in some instances I wasn't sure what some things were. My friend was able to tell me a few things, but it just would be nice not to have to ask about everything to decide. So those are my only complaints. Probably going again some time this week to get more tacos.... $2 a piece isn't bad :) read more

Alright, I was born and raised in Southern California. When I left the state in 1991, I couldn't believe what passed for Latino food on the east coast. Everything is smothered in cheese, sauce, Queso, sour cream, shredded lettuce to the point where you don't know what the hell you're eating. Went to Culpeper and saw this place in a run down strip mall. Based on the Yelp reviews I gave it a whirl. Tamale de puerco, tamale de queso y jalapeño, two tacos de pollo and a fountain drink for $10. Plus guacamole salsa which was awesome. All was fantastic. Super friendly service. I was so glad I found this place as I head to Culpeper through work duties. It will now be one of my favorite parts of my job! read more

The food is not DELICIOUS, I mean is good but that's it; prices are fair and you see that they really put an effort on what they are doing. Don't do it. The soda fountain is full of ants. Found 3 in my sons cup. No posted menu prices. Paid $39.98 for 3 tacos, 1 cheese quesadilla, 1 steak and cheese quesadilla, 1 burrito and 2 sodas. Quesadillas were served with cold unmelted shredded cheese and had to be sent back to the grill. Even the seat cushion in the booth was broken. read more

I think this place is Salvadoran. It helps to speak fluent Spanish here. I notice that gringos are discovering the place so it might get easier for linguistically challenged folks. I fall between and so a lot of times I get something a little different than I thought or 2 of something but it's worth it! I usually get the pupusas which are terrific, especially if you have the many salsas they offer, you need to ask for them. I get the bean or cheese. One time they maned me an amazing fresh avocado salad and I was never able to get it again. Go expecting a very casual, somewhat loud atmosphere and a meal for under 6 bucks. Food is amazing and HUGE portions my only problem is that the service is sooo slow and in the winter it's cold in there and the summer is unbearably hot. I will go back because the food is awesome. Doesn't sell alcohol which is good because so many great Mexican places turn into cantinas when they sell alcohol in this area for some reason. read more

Awesome, casual, inexpensive (and authentic) Mexican food in a blink-and-you-miss-it strip mall location. In Culpeper. Stopped here on a whim with my dad after a long drive and found the best Mexican I've experienced in Northern Virginia. It had the essentials: decent carne asada, pastor tacos, fresh tamales and house-made hot sauces. I'll be back the next time I'm in the area. read more

Being honest, it looks like a dump inside. Nothing special from a visual standpoint. BUT, from what I've had on their menu, their food is amazing! I always get some sort of tacos and pupusas and they're always delicious. On top of that, their prices are quite affordable. Definitely a place I can go to several times a month w/o getting tired of it. read more
