Came here to catch up with a long time friend and we didn't know where to eat. We landed on El Jimador Azteca from Yelp and decided to give it a try. We found this place on yelp and agree with the 4 star rating. Came in for lunch with 14 people and were promptly seated at two large booths. Warm and inviting place with nice decor indicative of many Mexican restaurants. Chips were thin and warm and the salsa was homemade. All of our kids ordered off of the kids menu and left no scraps, so I'd say it was a hit! At the adult table we had fajitas, tacos, and burritos and all agreed on the 4 stars. I love this place. I have never order anything I didn't like. I am picky about salsa and theirs is not too watery or too "ketchup-y" like the jarred stuff. My favorite dish is the tacos de carne asadas although their enchiladas Michoacanas is great as well! This is my go to meeting place for casual catch up lunches and dinners with family and friends. My experience was a 2 star at best. -I walked in around 2:30pm on a Tuesday, coming home from a mini vacation. I was seated and noted, I was the only person in the restaurant but that's OK. I was brought chips and salsa. Salsa was good. Normally, its watered down and i just ask for cheese dip but this salsa was good. After the chips and salsa,, a man walked by sweeping. Put the broom down and asked me for my order. I asked for Fried, chicken chimichanga with rice and beans. I said, later, I want to put in 2 Togo orders. He went to relay the order right away, then continued with cleaning. Food came out in good time. Looked and smelled great however, like that old commercial for Pepto Bismal says... I liked my food, but my food doesn't like me.. I was bloated and had to go to the bathroom within 15 min of eating 1/2 my meal. I felt like that at similar Mexican Restaurant in Warrenton and I stopped going. At one point another guy in a suit walked by and sighed..I think they were bored and not happy for lack of customers. Maybe this food was sitting since sunday..knowing the week is slow, they can use it. IDK but No smiles. Bored employees. Only customer in the place....and I'm bloated in mere minutes. Always a favorite! Not only because it's close to our neighborhood, but because the food is always good, the drinks are great and the service is always excellent. We went way out of our way to try this restaurant out and it did not disappoint. Located in a modern little plaza in Fredericksburg, it was clean and inviting walking in. Lots of cool Hispanic decor and a full bar in the restaurant. Complimentary chips and salsa were very good. My husband and I ordered the loaded nachos, which were plentiful with toppings and delicious! And although we rarely order dessert now, we splurged and got the fried ice cream. I've had fried ice cream before and it was top notch! My husband has never had fried ice cream, but he wasn't a fan. Prices were competitive with other Mexican restaurants. Now onto service. I would say our service was okay at best. Unfortunately, every time I needed our waitress, I saw she was sitting at a back table with another employee and they were both on their phones. I understand that this is typical of today's generation, but when you are in the service industry, it is really important to keep those phones out of view of the patrons when you're on the clock. Our waitress was very young, cheerful and friendly, but when I sat with my drink empty, and couldn't find her, and then on my way to the restroom, I see she's on her phone, that just really makes me not want to return. "mexican food" is a very loose term now a days... not unlike "organic" or "authentic"... but these guys make delish Americanized Mexican food (Tex-mex?) and it's really good. Food was really good but the server (Christina) was not good at all. Once she dropped the food off, we didn't see her again. She Did not come by and ask if we wanted additional margaritas or anything. Never checked on us to see how we were doing. The place was half full so it wasn't like they were busy. I would see her walking around lost and avoiding tables like she didn't want to work. The food was great though and I'll come back, but next time I will ensure I don't sit in a seat that she is servicing. read more

Cause it was the only food stop on our road trip through, and we all threw up multiple times between 30min and 3hours after. Not acceptable and I hope an owner or manager will take care of the food quality... updating an hour or so later because the three individuals are now having diarrhea and still throwing up. Another update: the morning after, another member threw up multiple times and had diarrhea throughout the night bringing total of 4/5 people who ate here got sick from this food. After looking based on the reviews and I thought I found my spot but I was wrong. My family came here to try this Mexican restaurant and I was disappointed. It was okay Mexican spot. The interior was excellently decorated. The menu was huge and a little bit overwhelming because I didn't know what I wanted to try first. We started first with our drinks and some quest with chips. And I must say this place is the best we've tried here in the Fredericksburg area so far for sure! Great rice, tasty salsa, lots to choose from, good kids menu, friendly fast service, huge spacious booths, kid friendly. The shrimp tacos were so flavorful and savory. Well let me start off that I do enjoy this place. However last night May 4th, not sure what was going on but the service was very bad. The food was okay, my chicken tostadas were very tasteless. Their chicken seemed like it was cooked without any seasoning or anything just plain old chicken. The beer was good, however their Treasure Margarita was not good at all. Now let me get to the service.....waited for someone to come to the table took a while. Finally when he did was not too friendly. Finally ordered our food and drinks. Drinks came fast and so did the food. But after we got our food didn't see our waiter again. I had to get up and go to the bar just to get a refill on my daughter's soda. Well when I went up there seemed like the whole staff was sitting in front of on their phones and weren't paying attention to their customers not good!!! Finally when we were ready to leave again same thing happened....had to go look for our server to get the bill...again ignoring us and on his phone in the corner. I've been hearing good things about this restaurant but only now had the opportunity to visit. On first walking in I can say I really liked the atmosphere. It was welcoming. Although my husband and I were alone I was already thinking I wanted to bring back the kids. We sit and get the customary chips and salsa on the table. They should bottle up and sell that salsa because it was absolutely delicious. Fresh warm chips didn't hurt either. We then took a visit to the salsa bar. They have six different salsas to choose from in varying degrees of hotness. None of them compares to the table salsa. I was looking for a corn salsa and pico, but maybe that's not authentic or too expensive to offer for free. I don't know. They have a basic drink menu. I also saw a frozen margarita machine behind the bar. They had a mojito selection and I ordered a classic, my husband got a whiskey sour. The mojito was way to sweet. It was difficult to drink and I tasted no rum. I mean at a Mexican restaurant I shouldn't have ordered a Cuban drink. I take ownership of that. The whiskey sour was good but "weak" according to my husband. My suggestion to them invest in a real bartender. I noticed a few of my neighbors have issues with the outcome of drinks. Next time I will try the Sangria and margarita and let you know the outcome. Now to the main event. I got chicken chimichangas and my husband got one of the combos. My order comes with avocado salad and refried beans. I swapped them from black beans and got a side of Spanish rice to split with my husband. I also opted to not get the nacho cheese that comes on top of the chimichangas. The black beans were PERFECT. The chimichangas were spot on as well. Absolutely no complaints about the food. My husbands combo came with a burrito, taco and quesadilla. We usually share food but we were either way to hungry or just really enjoying our food we didn't. TLDR- Food is delicious. El Jimador Azteca has great potential. My rating of three stars may be harsh but keep in mind I've been living in Texas for the last two years so the bar is pretty high. My Fredericksburg friends and fam had been raving about this place, so I had to try it. I received a warm greeting from the three hostesses sitting at the front, then was quickly seated. While waiting for my friend K Riz to arrived I ordered a small sweet & spicy Margarita. It was only $5.50 for a small. The waiter brought me fresh chips and salsa. The tortilla chips were still warm. The salsa was good but could have used more spice. I noticed they have a self serve salsa bar. There were 6 different salsas to choose from. I went for the avocado salsa and it was delicious! Just the right about of kick and flavor. K Riz ordered the queso. Unfortunately it was too thin for my taste. I prefer a thicker creamier queso. For our main dishes I got the chicken fajita quesadilla and KR chose the chicken tacos. We each enjoyed our meals. My quesadilla could have used more cheese but other than that it was good. Overall El Jimador Azteca did a good job. They have a nice atmosphere, friendly staff, and good food. I would definitely pick them over the other local villa you may be familiar with. read more

Update: imo the quality of their food has gone downhill. I think they started off with the good stuff but now are using cheap ingredients, with less substance and more cheap fillers. I have had two bad digestive experiences here out of about 5 or 6 times of eating here.
