This is probably the best spot on Main Street to grab a good breakfast taco. The prices are very reasonable, and the menu choices are many. However, they will charge you for a cup of water and there is a $.40 service fee which I cannot explain. At least there was no credit card fee, but the tip screen was waiting. To be honest, their bacon and egg basic taco is pretty average, nothing special, but their red spicy sauce definitely took it up a notch. Their potato sausage and egg taco barely had any discernible sausage to it. It's the communal salsa bar that really makes the tacos extra special. They do have a fountain drink station, bottled soda on ice and a pot of coffee by the order window. You can get quite a variety of mixed drinks like margaritas along with numerous beer choices, although no local beers. Because of the value and sauces, I would definitely come back to this spot again. And just so you know, they do not have a public bathroom here and they are closed Monday. Service was great, the restaurant was clean and the workers were very welcoming. The food was 20/10! We tried their tacos: Al pastor, bistec/sirloin and carnitas. The Al pastor was on a very traditional trompo and perfectly seasoned. Carnitas was tender and juicy. The bistec was seasoned well as well. We had a 3 street tacos plate and 5 street tacos plate. Each plate came with a cooked small potato portion and grilled onions. They also have a self serve small salsa bar. This salsa bar has guacamole- that you can help yourself to! (Which btw is unheard of! No place gives you free rein to some authentic guac!) We also tried their watermelon agua fresca it was 8/10 - too pricey imo for the taste and the horchata as well. We kept going back to the salsa bar for more because it was that good. This is not a full-service restaurant. You walk in, order at the counter, get a buzzer, grab your food, eat, and head out--very casual and straightforward. Definitely more of a quick stop than a sit-down dining experience. I ordered the chorizo breakfast taco, and it was tasty and huge. Honestly, I should've just ordered one taco because it was very filling. The barbacoa taco, however, was not for me. The meat was very fatty and still had connective tissue, which wasn't visually appealing, so I didn't eat it and ended up giving it away. Overall, the guacamole and chorizo taco were the highlights for me. This place is legit. The salsa bar is immaculate and very generous with several options including aguamole (& guacamole!) along with some spicy traditional salsas and a pico de gallo. They have a well stocked bar with several choices of Mexican spirits and cervezas. I really enjoyed my birria torta and my colleague got some sort of nacho looking plate: but it looked huge and he said the pastor was delicious. The service was friendly and we will definitely return when back in Fredericksburg. It's awesome that they have a proper taqueria that's so accessible right on the main drag in walking distance to everything. Came here during the eclipse. We were hungry and most other restaurants were slammed, so we were grateful that these tacos were available at all. However, the tacos themselves were pretty mediocre. We have a lot of excellent street tacos at home in Redwood City, CA (highest density of taquerias per capita in the state!). Comparatively, I found Taqueria Machetes's tacos to be bland and the meat unappetizingly flabby. The much-hyped salsas were fine but not particularly good. Chips were meh. Best item was the chili poblano, which I would recommend. Eclipse Week may have been an outlier, and this experience might not be representative of how things are on a typical day. However, based on our visit, if you already have access to a lot of flavorful, authentic street tacos, Taqueria Machetes may come across as sub par. It's not terrible but the Yelp rating seems inflated. On the other hand, if you prefer your food "less zesty" then perhaps these tacos will hit the spot. read more

This is a special review as I only had time to chat with the staff and sample their food but was unable to eat here due to a family emergency. Staff was super friendly and answered all my questions. They even offered me samples to try. The tacos were super juicy and flavorful. They even let me try their michelada mix which is a drink made with beer and tomato juice along with spices. Not sure if I'm more disappointed in the food or all the 5star reviewers that led me astray. The staff was kind but the food was disappointing. After a long drive into Fredricksburg my family and I all looked at each other in disbelief at how underwhelming our food looked and tasted. I ordered the papa machete with beef sirloin, it was a potato base with large strips of plain beef, nothing to do with a actual machete. The torta to our shock was NOTHING more than meat and bread. The lengua tacos were plain and unappetizing and their aguas frescas were indeed fresh but also lacked flavor. Im assuming this is one of those spots where you have to know what to order and we missed it all. The trompo taco and their horchata were the only tasty item we recieved in our $60+ tab.
