I was in Modesto for business the other day and decided to stop by here for lunch as it received a high amount of reviews and praise on Yelp. To sum it up and keep things short, seems like I had an identical experience that reviewer Angelo D. had: - Here on business, not a local. - Carnitas a tad too crunchy for my taste. - Carne asada, although good -- nothing amazing, unique, or mind blowing about it. - Salsa was a bit weak. I really couldn't agree with him more -- but on to the more positive aspects: - Very good service and nice staff - Taco portions are pretty big, at least more than I notice for regular 'street tacos;' they don't really seem to skimp. - Well prepared food; It's not terribly messy. My taco's looked big and full, but surprisingly stayed well intact. Overall -- forgive me locals if this sounds snobby -- but Modesto is not exactly a mecca for "great food," right? I guess I just expected more as I saw the high amount of reviews / rating ratio for Taqueria Modesto. I just don't understand how people can rate this place 5 stars ("as good as it gets," may I remind you) and throw around hyperbole such as: "food is AMAZING!" or "BEST Mexican food EVER!!" or "best Mexican food I've had in the Central Valley!!!!!" Seriously people? You sure you want to declare that so soon? You SURE 'bout that Modesto? At the time of this review, it's at a 4.5 rating; This place should be a 3.5 - 4.0 rating at best. Don't get me wrong though -- the food here is "good" and I'm sure it'll satisfy your Mexican food craving, but I'm just warning you to not look for anything necessarily unique or "one-of-a-kind" here. Moved to the valley 2 years ago from the bay area and have been looking for some good spots. I've gave taco trucks and a handful of restaurants a try and let me tell you this has got to be the best taqueria in Modesto! Whenever I'm in the mood for some bomb azz Mexican food the 30 minute drive to Modesto is definitely worth it. When my family comes out to visit this is where I take them and they too love it. I previously rated this place highly but had a bad experience on Dec 7, 2014. Spent quite a bit of $$ on a Sunday to watch a game with some rather hungry men. Rice is my burrito was dry, in others their burritos ran watery. Chicken was grisly and gamey...someone actually joked that they hoped they were eating chicken and not something or someone else. If you are going to do well as a restaurant....YOU HAVE TO BE CONSISTENT...and plus I work my fukking tail off. I am so disappointed that I didn't find this place sooner!!!!!! It was ridiculously delicious. Let me break my experience down: Tortilla on my burrito was actually cooked! It had the flavorful brown spots from heating the tortilla. Other taquerias don't warm/cook the tortillas and boy, what a difference a little flipping of a tortilla over heat will do! Well done, Taqueria Modesto! The salsas... delicious! The hottest is the oranger sauce, and it was so good! I will definitely be back for some more of that sauce. The regular salsa was flavorful as well. Loved it! I didn't care for the darkest red sauce, but that may just be a flavor preference not a restaurant issue. The beans were homemade and delicious! I cannot tell you how much I appreciated the cheese being melted in my burrito. Establishments all over this valley are notorious for giving you a bean burrito with the cheese ice cold and unmelted in the cold white tortilla. NOT Taqueria Modesto. It was melted and the burrito was downright perfect. The taco de asada was unbelievable, and I will definitely be back on $1 night! So tasty! I cannot comment on the chips as I didn't have any. My student's parents own this place; he kept bringing it up; so I decided to give it a shot. BEST decision I've made in the food department. The food tastes pretty good. Only been here twice.. But i probably won't ever return. See.. I asked for nacho fries.. Two meats.. Carnitas and Steak.. Well.. If you think 95% carnitas and 5% steak is worth paying extra for it... By all means, it's your choice.. But what really left a bad taste in my mouth is how after bringing my claim to the cashier about not getting Carne Asada in my fries, she walked to my table and agreed with my claim and communicated it to the cook whom took the liberty to express his rebuttal at my table. Said they only put a very small amount of steak.. But then I asked why do they put so much carnitas since I am paying for two meats.. He said its only supposed to come with carnitas.. And the steak doesn't match the amount of carnitas.. Then told me I must have ate all the steak already which I would have known if I did, but I only noticed carnitas.. I don't like to be spoken to like I am an idiot.. I was tempted to throw my plate at the man.. But what would that solve? I left immediately.. I admit, I became filled with anger at the way things we're resolved.. Spent 14 dollars on lunch and left with my stomach turning... This was my family's go to mexican restaurant. But after we were offered 2 salsa cups for 13 tacos and purchased a large salsa, the owner would still not allow us two more salsa cups for the salsa bar. No pictures sorry but I came out from Oakland with my son for a social distancing dinner and early mothers day visit with my mom. Thought why not Taco Tuesday on Cinco De Mayo. About the most festive we would get during quarantine. Any way we were all very impressed. The tacos were very good and pretty big as well. My husband stayed in Oakland and didn't want any but I couldn't finish mine (5) so brought him back 2, even a few hours later he enjoyed them and thought they were really good and probably better hot and fresh. It's not your favorite taco truck but it's a clean place, well lit and the food isn't too shabby either. I like the "bar" area seating. The salsa bar has lots of diversity and you can customize your meal with all the goodies. read more

Came here for dinner with my husband and I got 3 Carne asada tacos and my husband got Carne asada, chicken, pastor & carnitas tacos...he wanted to add cheese and sour cream to his tacos and the guy at the register said it's going to be $1 extra for the toppings, is that ok? Yeah we don't mind! The tacos were a very good portion, you will definitely not leave there hungry! It had LOTS of meat, if you really wanted you could split the meat between the two tortillas! This is my second time here and the food is good and is also in a good location but the only thing that I seen again was this place is a bit dirty. The walls could use a good wipe down and maybe even a fresh coat of paint would do it some good. The lighted signs looks like no one has ever wiped them down as they have a nice thick coat of dust on them. However I really like how you can see them cook if you stand in Certain spots, if they would move their fridge of drinks against the wall so everyone can see that would be awesome! I honestly don't know where to start... my fiancé bought me 5 chicken tacos and a chicken burrito for himself. While i was eating my last taco that i shared with him, something got stacked in my throat. I ran to the kitchen sink just to puke it out, because it was poking on my throat. I called the store and told them that I ate something that wasn't supposed to be on the food. The cashier put me on hold and another lady picked up so I explained it again to her but then she put me on hold again, the third person picked up and it was a guy who answered so I explained it to him what happened and i was shocked when he said " ohhh so it was the last piece, that's interesting...?" To be honest i was furious and disappointed. First of all the reason that i called was to inform them and give them a heads up that there's a metal on the food that they're serving. No intention whatsoever on asking for a refund since we enjoyed the food before it all happened. The way he talked to me was so disrespectful and had no proper manners or even the right to serve a customer. Hopefully when i come to the store the next day and speak to the owner "Jose" I'll be seeing you too. I was denied service due that I had my service dog accompanying me. Was told loudly in front of a crowded establishment that I had to take my dog out after telling them twice my dog was a service dog and was asked to leave. I called to speak to the manager as he told me also that I couldn't have my dog in there to not offend the other diners and that he doesn't bring his dog in.
