The good: service was nice and accommodating. The location is airy and space is clean and artsy. My son liked the breakfast chicken and waffle. The not so good: enchiladas were cold and mole was a bit too sweet. Torta cubana is an absolute no. Menu does not state the sandwich has beans. Pineapple and beans? Ew. Carnitas were mush. Cheese was crusty instead of melted and bread was super hard. Really quite at lunch time. Ambiance would be more cheery with music. Also, they need to fix all the typos in their menu. Since there's no more Chevys in the area this the next best thing. Really gives off that Tex Mex vibe with an upscale setting. Went here for dinner and we were blown away with everything. If you like Talavera on Solano this place has the same level of accuracy and consitency with authenticity in a formal dining toomm(compared to talavera) The mother and son duo now have two spots on Solano. Totally worth it. Luckily they still sell the mole poblano here too but it's a different spin and menu otherwise cause it's a different chef. I had the to chilaquiles anahuac with carnitas. This is a new place on Solano Ave. where Fonda used to be. I came and had a few drinks and oysters. The drink was delicious, I had the Butterly but with tequila instead of mezcal. It was a GREAT balance and served with an edible flower, thanks to Alberto the bartender! The oysters came with three sauces: a chimichurri, a house salsa, and a salsa negra (that was a unique blend with soy sauce maybe?!) I put all three on each oysters and it was so flavorful and completed the oyster well. I will be back to try their food! But the service was attentive and the ambiance is very similar to the old place. Also, there's an upstairs with TV's with more of a lounge feel and intimated tables near the front (if you were familiar with Fonda, you know the setup and vibes). Lastly, they have a GREAT playlist playing in the background on low so it doesn't compete with the rest of the experience. They even gave me Chapulines to try with sal de gusanito IYKYK! 10/10 recommend. read more

We were greeted by the only server who was a hospitable as one would expect. There were several appetizing dishes to consider but I opted for the Anahuac chilequiles. I chose this dish to come with a skirt steak option. Other options were chicken and carnitas. My dish came out in a molcajete. So imagine a 3-egg scramble (my Preference) sitting on a bed of refried beans with skirt steak, tortilla chips, chile rojo and sliced avocado...I thought there is no way I can eat this all but I did, slowly, and it was delicious. read more

Yay! They opened. I used to come to Fonda, the former restaurant in this spot so I'm half Anahuac took over. We came during the soft opening and there were so many attentive servers. We came later night and had already eaten so we just had guac and chips, ceviche and drinks. The cocktails we had were very good. We had the Cantarito, Casuelita and a specially made spicy margarita with mezcal. Everyone is so friendly and happy. It's a joyful place with a good vibe. I love how they added TVs upstairs. I've been eagerly awaiting this new addition to Solano Ave, and Anahuac had their soft opening tonight. We were driving by, saw that it was open and decided to check it out. The restaurant is serving lots of favorites from enchiladas suizas to fajitas to wet burritos to fajitas. We ordered the queso fundido to start, and I ordered the birria for my main entree. The queso fundido was good and a great way to start the meal. I enjoyed the birria, though it wasn't what I was expecting - I thought it would be closer to shredded beef tacos but it was more like beef soup. The bar offering is mostly mixed drinks with house wine. I had the classic margarita which was tasty and not too sweet. The kitchen and wait staff were a bit overwhelmed during the soft opening, but I'm confident they'll work their kinks out before the grand opening on Jan 31. read more

This was not a good lunch experience at what used to be Fonda. A very weird lunch menu for a Mexican restaurant with things like chicken and waffles abd BLT. i opted for what they called a gluten free BLT which came on wheat bread and included a small ration of soggy fries. This was a quite weak BLT my partner had the Ham and Cheese Omelet. He again the food was very average. Btw, the toast came untoasted The glasses of water that were served consisted of tepid water, no ice. This isn't your regular Mexican restaurant. It has a more extensive menu and is a bit more upscale. I had an East Brother Mexican lager which was so-so and guacamole and chips. The guacamole was a generous portion so much that I had to ask for more chips that were provided for no additional cost. The chips were homemade and thick which I really liked. The only downside was that I thought some of them were old and a bit chewy instead of crispy. As an appetizer I had the tostaditas which I thought were nice to snack on. It came with a total of three. As a main entree I enjoyed the enchilada suizas using chicken. I never had this before but it was definitely a cut above regular enchiladas. The server said they were very popular and I can see why. The interior was nice. We sat on the ground floor by the window. A good table selection. They also have upstairs dining. One real drag was getting a reservation. Nowhere could I find where to make a reservation. Also operating hours I couldn't find either. They need to fix this. Other than that I'll be back. Was so sad when Fonda closed... and was hoping Anahuac would fill the shoes of one of my favorite happy hour spots on Solano Ave. It did not. We went during the soft opening, and the staff was overly friendly and eager to please, but the drink menu was small and the drinks themselves weren't great. Was looking for more creativity--unique drinks that make you want to come back. The chips and salsa were stale and the salsa was pretty spicy and not fresh. I'll probably return since this was just the soft opening but hoping their drinks and food have improved drastically. Stay tuned. read more

Had brunch there on Mother-s day. Was told to sit upstairs. My son and I ordered an eggs benedict plate. Both our benedict the egg was over done...the yolk was not running. We should had complain but decided not too. After they gave us our food, we saw they didn't give us any place settings!!! My son had to go downstair to tells someone about this. After 2 minutes, some person then brought them up. We had been given coffee earlier but it wasn't a full cup. Told her I needed more coffee. But she didn't come back up and we had to tell another waitress who was cleaning up for more coffee..and was missing my wife's bread. It took another 5 minutes for a person to bring more coffee. THE COFFEE pot was at the bottom & she could only fill my cup 1/2 way again and not enough for my son who was out of coffee too. Went there for mother's day cause O2 eatery was too crowded. Both me and my son order one of their eggs benedict brunch. Eggs were overcooked and not runny at all. Normally would complain but didn't. It actually started earlier when they dropped our plates they left. You know what we had no place settings & my son had ro go downstairs to ask someone to bring up our utensils & napkins. Our first cup of coffee my cup was only 1/2 full! Wants they serve you they dont come up stairs much. Had to ask them twice for more coffee. First time they brought the pot with very little coffee in it. Again my cup was only have full & my son also. Will not be coming back. read more

The wait staff are very nice. It's a new place and looks nice inside. Fajitas are good. Margarita is on menu. I asked for it to be made into a Cadillac margarita and they did. If you like a salted rim make sure to ask for the whole rim to be salted as the only salt about an inch normally. There were two relatively small enchiladas, when a better portion size for the price would have been three. The carne asada portion size was better. This was my second time dining at this restaurant, and unfortunately, I was disappointed again. This time I ordered the huarache. The masa was very hard instead of soft and fresh, and the chicken on top was grilled but extremely dry. It was not enjoyable. On my previous visit, I ordered a mole dish, and it was served cold. It also arrived much earlier than my husband's dish, so I had to wait until his food came before we could eat together. While the drinks and atmosphere are nice, the food quality has not met expectations. The service was polite, but based on two visits, I would not recommend the food here. read more

Like everyone else in the area, I've been waiting to see who would pick up the baton from my long-time favorite, Fonda. The new owners at Anahuac live up to the legacy. My wife and I visited on a Tuesday night. Plenty of room to seat us at a two-top shortly before 6pm. By the time we finished dinner, the dining room was pretty full. Like Fonda, they have a separate upstairs seating area, and I don't know how busy that was (we were in the main dining room). There are big-screen TVs on the wall up there, so some potential for sports bar action for the Super Bowl and so on. They have a selection of tapas for table sharing, and a larger selection of entrees than Fonda did. You could certainly order those and share them around the table. We shared the Huarache starter -- house-made tortilla with refried beans, cheese, veggies, sour cream. It took a while to come, but was worth the wait. My wife ordered the veggie Enchiladas Suizas for her main and enjoyed it. I had the Molcajete, a meat explosion that was about twice as big as my dinner needed to be -- the second half will be lunch today. This was really excellent. Cocktails were good. The house specialties lean hard on tequila and were excellent. I ordered an ordinary vodka martini, and it was competently-made but nothing to write home about. They've got a selection of local beers on draft and several wines as well. Service was super friendly, and except for the wait for our starter, prompt. They were still in soft-open mode on the night we went, so get some slack on that account. Overall, loved this place, will be back. read more

Was so disappointed. I was expecting something a little unique. Or at least very good execution. Instead it's standard fare generic Mexican with (gasp!) fajitas as a twist. Portion sizes very small. Prices high. And I understand prices are high everywhere. But I at least want something flavorful for my money. This was bland mediocre food. Went on a Saturday night. Places was busy. Staff standing around. Kitchen staff not looking particularly stressed. Had to flag down a server twice. Once to order. Once to get our drinks that were forgotten. I know this is owned by the family that has Talavara (and the extended family owns several more in Berkeley). Those are all good. This was a big miss for us. Oh well. well, a blurb online said they had taco Tuesday, but we got there and there was no taco Tuesday place had a few people as we were early, but most of the tables were open yet we waited almost 20 minutes to be seated. The waitstaff were completely inexperienced though polite. A great menu of some familiar and some more upscale Mexican dishes, but all of them elevated by the top notch ingredients. Smoky salsa and filling posole were great with a couple of house margaritas.
