It was good, more of a so cal style burrito, small chopped chicken almost shredded, barely any rice or beans in the burrito, and I added fajita veggies, and fresh jalapeños. It was spicy but more mild. My partner got the camarone's burrito (shrimp) and he said it was really good. I also got a side of the black salsa which was full of chilis and a mild amount of spicy. If the beans and rice and the salsas have good flavor then the food will absolutely be good and my theory did not fail me here. I have driven past this place a few times and was intrigued by the "black salsa" sign. Tonight was the night to try this place! First of all, this place is much cleaner than I expected. It looks like this place is mostly carry out, but have a nice number of tables. You get the famous black salsa for free along with some tasty tomato noodle soup. Nice start! I was mixed on the salsa, but liked that it was different than most. It's very smoky with some heat. We also got guacamole which we had to add more salt and spice which was fine, but it was fresh and colorful. We also got margaritas (strawberry and peach). I thought they were ok, but I appreciate trying different flavors. I went with the taco dinner with carne asada. I had a high bar, but thought it was good, but not great. I thought it was a little greasy, but the meat was cut perfectly. It was also a pretty fair price so I liked them. My dad got tamales which he loved. My mom got elotes which was probably the best dish. My dad isn't a big spice fan so he appreciated being able to add his own spice to his dish. The service was surprisingly good. Nice and fast too! The staff here is so nice and I think is the only Mexican joint I've ever been to that offers complimentary soup. It was incredibly heartwarming especially during winter in Chicago. The black salsa is what drew me to try this place and it was definitely a tasty treat! I ended up ordering the 3 taco dinner and got to try a variety of their meats including steak, lengua and fried tripe. All of them were excellent. I tried going to one of their locations on Ashland a while back, but it was small and no seating for the kiddos so I went to another place and I almost took all Traspasadas off the list. I'm very glad I didn't. I ordered my usual, three tacos. One Asada, one al pastor and one lengua. The al pastor was great. Good flavor and plenty of meat. Their lengua was cooked properly and very tasty. The star of the show was their carne Asada. A perfectly grilled and seasoned arrachera meat topped with cebolla y cilantro. Every bite was perfect and regretted ordering the other two meats. Carne Asada from now on at this joint. Like more yelpers have stated, their black salsa is insanely delicious. I usually judge a salsa by how spicy it is because it usually adds an extra kick to a bite, the black salsa is beyond all of that. The black salsa truly has flavor. It doesn't need heat. Words can't explain the flavors with the black salsa on those carne Asada tacos. I'll be back very soon! read more

This was by far one of the worst dining experiences I've ever had. First of all, the food was absolutely terrible--barely edible. The portions were laughably small for the price they charged. But the real issue was the dishonest business practices. When I first paid, they purposely didn't give me a receipt. My brother-in-law later pointed out that the amount they charged seemed way too high. So I went back to ask for a receipt which took them forever to provide. After ringing me up a second time to give me the receipt the total was completely different the cashier (a man) smiled in my face and gave me the receipt back instead of fixing the mistake there after pausing and looking at the receipt for a while looking like he definitely noticed the mistake he still stood quite and didnt give me the money back which he could have easily said he made a mistake the first time . It took my brother-in-law going back a third time before they finally returned the money they overcharged. This place is not only serving bad food, but they're also shady with their pricing and customer service. I would not recommend this restaurant to anyone. Avoid it at all costs. read more

I love a place that treats your visit as a family meal. The first thing they did was bring their complimentary signature black salsa and chips , followed by noodles in tomato broth. Both were fantastic. I had the cesina burrito with everything. I was more than I should have eaten but I couldn't stop. It was that delicious. I was very disappointed with the food. I been coming here for years, last time before covid. The food used to be great, anything you ordered was flavorful and legit. Today it want the case. We ordered steak fajitas that were actually sautéed onions, tomatoes, and peppers with a bit of steak, you can see the picture. The rice was semi dry, no flavor. The tacos were ok, they lacked flavor. The Lengua taco is $5.50 "because of high prices" which it's understandable but the size of the tortilla is only 3.5" in diameter, so it doesn't make sense when the taco it's already small. I have gone past this place so many times so I finally decided to order for pickup. I ordered 3 tacos, some guacamole, and more of the salsa negra. I really enjoyed the carne asada and barbacoa tacos. Very flavorful and filling. The pescado was okay but it did not travel well. I rode my bike to pick it up and by the time I got home 6 minutes later, the pescado one was falling apart in its tortilla. The fish was big and the toppings were great. The guacamole was very disappointing. No flavor. If you want mashed avocado with not much else, you'll enjoy. I just found it boring and it worth it. The salsa negra - oh wow I really liked it. Seating was available, greeted promptly and served salsa & chips within a minute of sitting down. The female order taker was nice. Decor was pleasant. The aroma was on point.
