We ordered *enchiladas suizas*, but they were served with corn tortillas instead of flour tortillas. I ordered a burrito costing $18 because it was supposedly loaded with extra ingredients; I also ordered a "Super Burrito" for $14--and it turned out the Super Burrito was actually larger and had more fillings. From the moment we arrived, our waitress displayed a negative, unfriendly attitude; she didn't even serve us a complimentary basket of chips and salsa. We asked her for more salsa and chips, and at the end of the meal--when I paid the bill--I discovered that we had been charged for every extra bit of salsa and every extra basket of chips she had brought us. We had to pay $4 for the chips and $1.50 for just two ounces of salsa served in tiny little cups. The food was mediocre--it wasn't particularly good--but this restaurant definitely charges for absolutely everything: every dollop of salsa they give you, and every basket of chips. If you ask for sour cream on the side, they charge you for that, too. I'm fine with being charged for most extras, but charging for chips and salsa is unacceptable; in all my life, I have never been to a restaurant that charges for those things. For two burritos and an order of shrimp enchiladas, I ended up paying nearly $90. I do not recommend going there unless you want to end up frustrated and annoyed. The food here is really good but I've tried this restaurant twice and both times the service has been pretty bad. Last time was Mother's Day and we waited 45 minutes for our food to come out. Everything was delicious (so kudos to the kitchen for holding this place together) and as ordered but definitely a completely disorganized and brusque service situation up front and our pina coladas came without alcohol and some mock confusion and gaslighting were offered by our server as to why. Please don't offer alcoholic cocktails on the menu and then when we order them serve us mocktails instead and feign confusion when we ask why. That's not what we ordered and no offer to make it right either is kind of annoying. In the end we went to the liquor store next door and bought some Bacardi and fixed it ourself. The chili rellenos and guacamole were delicious as was the Birria and pupusas we ordered. Atmosphere is so so definitely nothing to write home about and you can tell very minimal effort is put into the decor etc. just seemed a bit low effort as far as that's concerned. My husband & I often have dinner here but I needed lunch for 17 people & we were very limited on time. I went ahead of time & spoke to the manager Rey. He made it incredibly easy to plan my event. On the day of the event, the tables were set with chips & salsa on the tables. I had already ordered multiple items to serve "family style". This restaurant always has a bunch of cars parked out front so we decided to try it. It was very disappointing. The food is typical and nothing special. We ordered piña coladas that were missing the alcohol. For $14 you should be able to taste the alcohol. The chicken enchiladas were dry with no sauce or melted cheese over them. No melted cheese on the refried beans either. There was a green salad on the plate without any type of dressing, just plain lettuce and a tomato slice. It was just meh 2 plates of chicken enchiladas and 2 cocktails shouldn't cost $80. They also ding you 4% if using a credit card...not much tip money left after that. Won't be back. read more

I am sad that I have to give this restaurant this review. I was SO excited to eat there. I saw in their pictures (there are two Yelp sites for this restaurant) that showed house-made crispy tacos. I went in tonight so excited and was seated at the patio. When the waiter came out I wanted the Taco combo. I asked, how many tacos? He said, "one". I said, "only one taco on the taco combo?" He said, "yes". I asked if the tacos were crispy tacos. He said yes. I asked if they had ground beef tacos or shredded beef tacos or both? He said ground beef. I asked, again, if they were crispy tacos. He said yes. I ordered the taco combo with crispy taco/ground beef and an additional crispy taco/ground beef on the side. We waited for probably 15 minutes before I had to get up and ask for more chips, salsa and a drink. 20 minutes after ordering (and we're talking an empty restaurant) the plates come out and I have a soft taco/corn tortilla, completely limp, with bland carne asada. I asked the waiter, I asked for a crispy taco. He said, I'm sorry, crispy taco only comes with shrimp. (Hmmmm......me wonders.....you can't put beef in a crispy taco but you can put shrimp?) So the extra taco arrives and I wave them off. NOT what I ordered. So the bill comes. The had the second taco on there but not my second beer. All is good since the taco is less than the beer. I just Yelped Mexican restaurants in Gilroy, CA and got over 100 choices. This city isn't that big to accommodate these many places? But it does indeed have this number. So, how did my group of visiting brevern choose Chapala? We asked around and this was the most recommended. This place is as authentic as Mexican food can get (outside of Mexico). The smells, flavors, textures, heat and plating was right out of TJ (BTW - this is a huge complement). Also, the time it took from ordering to getting served was 20-25 minutes. This is not a complaint mind you but testament and complement. Each dish was started from scratch and meticulously prepared by the chef each step of the way until it reached our table. There was no nuked meats or prepared ingredients. This was fresh, clean and delicious food! There is nothing fancy about Chapala. It is a true dive that makes incredible cuisine. I had their Huevos Ranchero Chapala with chirizo and most others had there specialty which was Chilaquiles Rojas. This was kind of a rich nachos dish, but not the American version. They are very generous with their portions and you will not leave here hungry. You will also not leave here with a light wallet as this restaurant is a true $$ (two dollar signs). Tried this place for the first time and probably won't come back. When my steak Fajitas came out the plate was full of onions and bell peppers. I asked the waitress "where's my steak?!" There was about 4 strips of Carne Asada on the plate. Luckily the waitress took it back and added more meat. The fajitas where ok just so greasy, corn tortillas were doughy. Shrimp empanadas where good it was just doughy inside. The menu says all plates come with beans, rice and a salad. We didn't get our beans and the salad didn't come with any dressing. Still so yummy!!! Came for dinner on Sat, Nov 26 after driving the Thanksgiving holiday traffic on hwy 152. So nice to have a break from driving with homemade hot delicious food. The kids menu at dinner is larger than at lunch (or maybe they expanded the kid's menu). So helpful to have kid's hamburger or chicken strips when one child only wants a hamburger and the rest of us want the yummy Mexican food. I can't resist the shrimp empanadas. My husband has fajitas and my son loves the super burrito. My kids enjoy the chips and salsa, while we wait for food. Yes, we still only eat outside on the patio. Yelp says no outside seating, but when we asked to sit on the patio they were happy to seat us and even offered the heaters. We had jackets, so we didn't use the heater. My woman-friend chose a wet number with shrimp while I went with a more traditional Chilie Verde. The service was wonderful. The staff was attentive. Im giving this place 2 stars just because Im sure their food was going to be good had It actually been served to me. Im not from around this area but was passing though town and hungry so decided that this would be a good spot. Our order was taken promptly and drinks brought our quick enough. But after that we just sat and waited and waited and waited some more. a good 30 minutes passed and our food was nowhere in sight. I'm usually a pretty patient and understanding person but to be hungry and watching EVERYONE that came in after us get their food was enraging to say the least. After a good 30 minutes if not more we decided to just pay for our drinks and leave. our food was still " being prepared" and had to be cancelled. I think my husband and I have been here a few times. We were passing through Gilroy and I had a mean hankering for some tacos de carne asada. SoOoooOooo my husband and I decided to give in to my craving. All I knew is I needed some tacos, chips and salsa. For some reason my husband remembered this place. All I remembered is that I didn't have any complaints last time so why not? Parking is ample. We walked in about 5:45. You walk into a well lit, festively decorated dining area. Musica romantica playing overhead and you are immediately greeted and was told to choose any seat. We chose a booth. We were given menu's as soon as we were seated. A waitress came soon thereafter to take our drink orders and drop off some chips and salsa. The chips were warm and the salsa spicy but robust in flavor. The heat wasn't enough to numb your palate to the point you can't taste anything else. The waitress served us our drink and took our order. We noticed their tacos had the option of choosing small tacos ($2.50) with your choice of meat. Then there was an option to choose what they called "grandes" ($3.00) which was tacos made with fresh hand made tortillas. One thing I've learned is if you are given the option to choose fresh handmade tortilla tacos, you order fresh handmade tortilla tacos! Didn't take too long. My husband ordered 3 and I ordered 2, and the waitress asked if we were OK with cilantro and onion on top..uuhhmmm it ain't a taco without! My husband also decided he needed a michelada ($14)to complete his order. Michelada was aight (I may have become impartial since learning to make them homemade) the rim was garnished with cucumber, celery, carrots, 2 cold shrimp and a slice of orange. Let me tell you, my 2 tacos just about took over my entire dinner plate. They did not skimp on the meat and although I just had two I was glad it was a la cart because had mine came with rice and beans someone would have needed to wheel me outta there. The meat was seasoned perfectly and grilled just enough to have crispy bits but not enough to feel as if I ordered a jerky taco. They dice up the meat but not so much that you feel jipped or as if you aren't eating MEAT! Just enough cilantro and fresh diced onion to compliment the steak but not so much onion its overbearing. We were kind of bummed because as we were finishing up a couple of guys walked in and started setting up what we think was either a DJ or band set up. So if you want to enjoy some music with your michelada and tacos go on a Friday night after 7. We will be back. Delicious, fresh authentic Mexican food. In town from Fresno, Ca for husbands work. We're huge seafood fanatics and have tried Marisco restaurants all up and down California. We googled seafood restaurants im Gilroy and this popped up. Reviews were good so we said what the heck why not. This is by far the best seafood I've ever had! So many unique dishes I couldn't make up my mind, went with the red aguachiles mixtos and a shrimp ceviche tostada. And decided on trying some "Balazos"! Best choice ever! They're basically clamato shots with Tajin and an oyster at the bottom of the shot glass... needless to say we had 6 of them! Very good prices cheapest I've ever seen and lots of food is served, our waitress was so nice and helpful and very attentive. I'm not sure what happened with this place?! It used to be great; good breakfast, good lunch/dinner, great service......not anymore. Went for breakfast today. I ordered machaca con huevo (shredded beef with scrambled eggs). It was about 5 min to get drinks, not bad since there were only 4 other people in the whole place. After over 20 minutes...yes 20 minutes....My dish comes and it is full of shredded white meat with bell peppers mixed in. I asked the waitress what type of meat was on my plate, and she says "chicken. We don't do beef machaca anymore." So first of all machaca IS shredded beef, not shredded meat. Second, a lil heads up that what I was ordering was not even closed to what I was going to get. The person I was with got chilaquiles that came totally soggy and the scrambled eggs were not fully cooked. Wow. I believe this was the best Mexican food I've had in 15 years living in California. We asked the waitress for a recommendation from a few options we favored, and in the end we both had camarones (shrimp). My wife had it grilled, and with a mild spicy grill basting sauce. Very yummy. I had a platter, which included tortillas, rice, beans & salad, and had the shrimp + green chili wrapped in bacon. Yes! The service was slightly slow to start with, and the water refills were also slightly slow. But the friendliness and nice attitude of the waitress more than made up for it, and we gladly left a generous tip. The small delays quickly faded into insignificance.
