I love family owned businesses because you always know the food is authentic and really good! We were looking for food spots in the area and found this place. We went for Saturday lunch and it was pretty busy inside. There are lots of seating inside so we were seated right away and got our food in about 15-20 mins. Everything is so freshly cooked and grilled and everything was big portions so we had plenty to take home. My family ordered the Chimichanga Plate, Chile Verde Plate, and Pescado Frito Plate. It was all so flavorful! I got the Carne Asada Plate and while it was also good, the meat seemed a little bit overcooked in my opinion. We decided to find a spot we haven't tried before and found this Taqueria and gave it a shot! Finding parking right in front may be hard but there's plenty of street parking surrounding the place. The interior is cute yet small and gives the vibe of a family owned restaurant which I love! The servers are all very friendly and check in on you occasionally. The food came out piping hot and the plates were hot as well. I got a Chile Verde Chimichanga Plate and I was not disappointed in the slightest. I just so happen to stop in while attending a VW car show in Gilroy. I walked in, looked at the menu, and I asked the young woman taking the orders how's the food here. The enchiladas were basic. The green salsa tasted weird on them. The amount of rice they put on my to go order was sad. Looked like a portion for a child. The beans were good but that was it. Outside of customer service , food quality is mediocre at best. Chile rellano sauce was watery and had no flavor. Enchiladas red sauce tasted mostly like flour and powdered red chili. Chips were cold and salsa was not flavorful, but it was spicy. The restaurant inside had a really bad odor. Coworker recommended the restaurant and I was sadly disappointed. My coworker, after hearing of my unsatisfaction visited the restaurant shortly after and she commented that she had gone to this restaurant since childhood and too was surprised that she was not happy with the quality of food and she said she not sure what changed but just can't find it in her to return. However, they didn't get my usual order right, I wanted a bean and rice burrito with nothing else, and they somehow messed that up and decided to put sauce and cheese and fried the burrito instead. There seems to be some creative liberty that pays no mind to possible allergies their customers may or may not have. This place was recommended to me by my pops Doc. Street parking is a premium however I managed to find a space across the street. The Tacorea has an old-school mom and pop vibe. They now offer inside limited seating but 1st you must sign in and leave a phone number. We opted to dine in and have our 1st indoor dining experience since March. Pops ordered a chicken and Carnitas quesadilla I ordered a Chile Verde super burrito. Management: super nice people, definitely a mom and pop home cooked meal type of place "mom spoke broken English, at best" 5 stars quesadilla: pop loved it and it came LOADED with meat. Pops said it was one of the best he's had. Super chili Verde burrito: Damn son!! So big and yet it was so darn good that I was left wanting more!! Hands down the best chili Verde burrito I've ever had. Oh and don't get me started on the Verde salsa, oh my gosh I could of had me a gallon of it, it's so good and mildly spicy, the heat level lets you know that there is something warm in your mouth kind of like a nice hot chocolate and it lingers for a long time, never racing in intensity of heat. A quick summary if you are thinking about going here: 5/5 = Food (Holy moly.....not only is it yummy but they give a lot) 2/5 = Service (Don't expect much here. Will go into details in the review.) LOCATION: I think this is in downtown Gilroy and it was a pretty sad sight driving here. You go through downtown until you hit about 5th street and you can see so many stores closed down and boarded up probably due to COVID. Parking at the direct restaurant is difficult in my opinion due to filled street parking but there is a whole bunch of parking close by due to all the local store closures. FOOD: As stated above, the food is SOOO GOOD. I think it's been a long time where I was so happy eating really good Mexican food that I was smiling a ton afterwards. They are good in both VOLUME and TASTE. This is what I got: 1.) Taco & Enchilada Combo 2.) Chile Relleno & Enchilada Combo 3.) Chips and Salsa are free and also refillable by the way Some highlights: a.) I think my favorite in both those meals is the Chile Relleno as it was cooked so well and the cheese was rich and soft. b.) The plate comes out very hot that even the waitress is wearing heat protection mitts which makes the food extra delicious since its literally fresh out of the kitchen. SERVICE: This is where I think they could do more work. I'm giving them the benefit of the doubt as it is a mom and pop shop. They are also super busy and seems hectic when I went during lunch. 1.) When you go in, you aren't really sure what to do. I think if you are eating in, you go find an empty seat and the menu is underneath the see-through glass on the table. Eventually a waiter/waitress will come and take your order. I made a mistake and actually ordered/paid before I sat down because no one greeted me and told me what to do. You only order/pay if you want take-out. 2.) I found ordering to be difficult as they didn't understand what I wanted. I think I spent 5-7 minutes ordering two items off the menu since they were confused. The cashier spoke perfect english but she was managing the phones, telling the servers where the food should go, as well as taking my order. Other than that though, the staff is super nice and very friendly. No issues there at all. CONCLUSION: The food is so good that I definitely will be back for sure. I don't mind if the service is sub-par if they can outshine it with their delicious food. One of my favorite Mexican restaurants that I have gone too so far. read more

I arrived with my husband and a friend for lunch on a Saturday. Parking was pretty difficult around that time but we lucked out after driving around a bit and found parking in front of the bowling alley. We walked in were unsure about whether we sit first or order up front since no one greeted us. After standing around and looking at the menu, we were told that we could just take a seat; so we did. We got some delicious chips and spicy salsa while we continued to look through the menu. We ended up getting a platter of carne asada flautas, a chicken burrito without beans, and a carnitas wet burrito. Our food took forever to come out and for some reason the people around us (who all came after we ordered) received their food first. After a solid 30+ minute wait, we received our food. My friend cut her chicken burrito in half to discover that it was carne asada instead of chicken and my flautas were carnitas instead of carne asada. My friend asked to change her burrito which took less than 5 minutes (so I don't know why our good orginally took 30+ minutes) and I just ate mine because I didn't mind. At the end we weren't sure whether we pay at the front or at the table so after we asked our waiter, she said she would bring the check. But she must have forgotten because we sat there for a while and she never came back so we ended up just paying upfront. Los Pericos sits in downtown Gilroy and seems like a very popular lunch spot for locals. We were lucky to come after the lunch rush. We got the deep fried tacos and a burrito. The complimentary chips are very delicious as they're freshly made. Three star experience because the young lady at the counter was so impatient with taking the order. When asked what kind of meat options they have, she said everything. So when I asked for shrimp, she said we don't have that. I asked what they do have and then she rolled her eyes and let out a big sigh while pointing to the small print on one of their menus. Not a great experience... ordered shredded beef enchiladas, and the meat tasted so off that neither myself or the person I was with could eat a second bite. It was either very bad meat, or something that surely wasn't beef. They graciously offered to bring out another dish, and we waited about 20 minutes with no action from the kitchen. At that point, the waitress banged on the door of the bathroom, and out came the chef who had been in there for at least 20 minutes. At that point, I was done. Appetite gone.
