I recently had to adopt a heart-healthier diet due to medical concerns, so I've been replacing red meat with chicken and fish and being much more careful about fatty foods. I've even been using AI to help me find healthier restaurant options, which is how I came across Tacos America. It recommended the restaurant because they grill their chicken, so we were excited to try it. When we arrived, we saw them grilling meat outside and thought, "Perfect! This is exactly what we're looking for." Since the tacos are topped with vegetables, we felt like this would be a great, healthier option. Unfortunately, that's not what happened. While we were waiting, the people ahead of us ordered tripe. The tripe was being heated on the Blackstone in lard, and you could see it sizzling in the lard. After they removed the tripe and served it, it was time to prepare our tacos. They put our grilled chicken on that same surface with the same lard that had just been used for the tripe. I'm not someone who likes to complain, so I didn't say anything at the time. Looking back, I wish I had. I understand that they need to heat the meat before serving it, but if you are advertising grilled chicken as an option, customers should be able to expect that chicken to remain a healthier choice. At the very least, customers should be told if their food is going to be heated in lard and given the opportunity to say no. For someone like me, the entire reason for ordering chicken instead of fatty meats is to avoid exactly that. If I wanted my chicken cooked in lard, I could have ordered something else. It was especially frustrating because we specifically chose this restaurant believing we were making a healthier choice. As for the tacos themselves, they were good. Unfortunately, I ended up taking the chicken out of the tacos and only ate about 1/3 of it because I didn't feel comfortable eating all of it after seeing it heated in lard. I hated wasting the food, but I'm trying to take my diet seriously for my health. I really hope Tacos America considers this. If you offer grilled chicken as a healthier option, please don't put it on a surface covered in lard without telling the customer. There may be people ordering chicken for medical or dietary reasons who cannot eat lard or added fats. A simple question or warning would have made a huge difference. I was staying in Gilroy for the night and this place got good reviews so me and my boyfriend tried it. The inside was very bright with walls of yellow and orange paint and kind of festive. Parking can be difficult and tight there was barely one 1 spot left that we parked in. We ordered the mixed fajita plate which was $26 which came with chicken, steak, and shrimp with bell peppers and onions. It came with 4 tortillas, lettuce, rice, and beans. There was a high school wrestling team that had a huge order before us and I thought I would have to wait a long time for food but the food came out surprisingly fast in 15 min! The food was good. They also have a salsa bar where you can get whatever salsa you want. Probably the worst burrito I've had. What the heck, this place looks hella authentic, felt like I was in TJ. Until you look at the price. $6 for a taco, and burritos starting at $12. We got burritos because supposedly they are known for it. My $12 regular burrito listed rice, beans, onions, cilantro, and choice of meat. I chose carne Asada. I swear, it was the saddest burrito ever. I live in SD, so our burritos down there are amazing, was hoping the same. The burrito was so sad, it was super small for it too. Reviews my receipt to realize that I was charged for EVERY SINGLE TOPPING on a super carne asada taco "with everything" without disclosure. Base price for a taco with meat is $5! Was charged for, grilled jalapeno and grilled onion, beans and guacamole & cheese. Ended up being close to $8 per taco which is crazy. Today was my first trip here and it was awesome! I can't wait to come back and try all the other yummy menu items. Fresh tortillas made every day already make this place stand out but the salsa bar is exceptional! There was a guacamolito salsa, a chunky roasted tomato salsa (molcahete?), a red taco sauce, and a green taco sauce. All of them were great but my favorite was the molcahete salsa. I barely skimmed the menu and Choriquezo popped out at me as one of their specials. It's was a generous portion of chorizo flat top grilled with cheese, piled over and under 4 homemade flour tortillas. You basically make tacos out of the gooey concoction. It was a great way for me to try out all the salsas. I also got a Chile Verde taco and that did not disappoint. The Chile flavor was great and the pork was nice and tender. It was about when I took my first bite that I noticed the Al pastor on the vertical rotisserie in the kitchen, that's definately on my radar for my next visit. Found this spot in the middle of nowhere while visiting my aunt in Gilroy. I was a little shocked at the prices which seem a quite high but once you see the size of your order it all makes sense. Portions are ginormous! The torta al pastor I had was enough for two meals if not more, despite my attempt to power through it. The meat is so perfectly made and flavorful. It's is everything al pastor should be. This is honestly one of the best tortas I've ever had! They also make their own tortillas in house so tacos and burritos are also a must. I had a pretty disappointing experience at Ameca 1 last time I went, however ! I was in the area and decided to give this place another try. my mouth is watering just thinking about how DELICIOUS and fresh the food was. This location is a little different than the others because you order on the left separate from the kitchen and pick up on the right. The tortillas are fresh, the pastor was spot on, I do think the quality difference could be from weekday to weekend since it's busy on weekends. I will say that the food itself tastes just as delicious. The Pastor plate comes with marinate pork (pastor), rice, beans and 4 handmade tortillas. They're known for their fresh tortillas and al pastor, but honestly, the tortillas are way too thick and the al pastor is extremely over cooked, making them super dry and also very salty.
