Taco Birria Taco Lengua
Stephen M.

Stumbled into this taqueria during my time in Chicago. To keep it short, I didn't love any of the tacos which is an incredibly rare thing to happen. All of the flavors seemed...different. Very noticeable with the birria and the al pastor. Didn't get much of the familiar flavors I love and it wasn't the lack of familiarity...I just didn't enjoy what I had. They probably have some of the best horchata I've ever had though!

I ordered Lengua (tongue) / Atotonilco (house special steak) Al Pastor Tacos and my friend got a couple tacos and the Torta de Milanesa (breaded steak). Tenderness and flavor of taco meats were satisfying, especially Al Pastor. I wasn't a fan of the white sauce(mayo? Idk) and sliced onions, tomatoes combo on the Atotonilco taco. Friend very much enjoyed his torta. No issues with service. I appreciate the small menu and huge, clean space. Decent amount of seating to small to medium groups. *Cash only

I love coming here on a late night because I know the tacos will be so good!! I ordered 2 barbacoa tacos and my partner ordered 2 asada tacos. They taco cash only but have an atm available. The barbacoa tacos were so good and I love that they bring carrots to the table. The tacos come out so quick. This is a great late night option

Best torta I've had in a while, the service was fast. The food was warm the only downfall is that it's cash only so if you're in line and unaware you're outta luck. There is an atm available. Everything was clean and well kept. Music wasn't too loud. Pretty busy spot being we grabbed food late at night. Tase 9/10 and overall experience 9.5/10

Tacos were delicious. Was recommended by a local there and had to try it out. Price was reasonable and service was super fast. Have to come back!

It was my first time checking out the Pilsen area since moving to Chicago. My friends and I decided to grab some tacos at Taqueria Atotonilco and I'm so glad we did! The first thing to note is that it's a cash-only spot, but they conveniently have an ATM inside, so it wasn't an issue. The interior is spacious, with plenty of seating, including booths and tables, and even public bathrooms. It's a great place to sit down and enjoy your meal if you're not taking it to go. The menu offers a wide variety of tacos, all reasonably priced at around $4 each. I went with three tacos: the Al Pastor (which a friend recommended as their specialty), the beef taco, and the chorizo taco. While all of them were delicious and had that authentic Mexican flavor, the beef taco was my favorite. The quality and taste really stood out and came with cheese which I really liked. Service was excellent! Our food came out in under five minutes, and our server was super attentive, bringing us extra hot sauce and a large bottle of salsa verde. They even brought our sodas directly to the table, which was a nice touch. Overall, I had an amazing experience at Taqueria Atotonilco. It's the perfect spot for some quick, delicious tacos, and I'll definitely be coming back whenever I'm in Pilsen! Highly recommend for authentic, flavorful tacos at a great price.

Cash Only! Man oh man, some of thee best tacos I've had in Chicago. I haven't stop thinking about them since having them. We ordered 3 tacos with rice & beans and a Birria Torta. There was not one bad thing that we ate that experience. The tacos are almost $5 each so that was something new to me... but i could see why they charge that much. Not the biggest fan of paying that much for a taco but it was my first time & I wanted the experience. Good service & quick & easy. We are already planning our next time to be back. Since I've gone a week ago, I've already told 5+ people about this place. If you've never been, I highly recommend. Even if you have to travel out of your way for this place. Thank you Atotonilco, we will be back soon! Personal Review: 8.9/10

Birria taco

Birria taco was pretty good, and my friend said the Al pastor was really tasty. Ambiance was ok and instead of chips, they give you pickled carrots at the table. The bottle of salsa they give you was also great!

taco de asada with spoiled carrots

I was excited to eat tacos, ordene un taco de lengua y un taco de asada. Once my food was served, I added the pickled carrots and salsa to my taco. As I brought the taco closer to my mouth for a bite, a bizarre smell hit my nose but I bit it anyway. I immediately gagged and rushed to the restroom. The pickled carrots were spoiled as was my experience. I explained to the server the carrots were spoiled and she responded with ,"we cut them fresh this morning." I'm not one to leave a bad review; however, the lack of acknowledgment from the restaurant manager was disappointing. A simple apology would've sufficed but I didn't receive one. I unfortunately do not recommend the spot.

Let me start by letting you know this food was great! Atotonilco has several locations but I don't love all the food at certain locations. The food was so good that my 6 year old grandson asked for more! This location has great cooks. I couldn't give star because it's cash only - they do have a n ATM but it was an inconvenience. Service was good - food came out in pretty good time. This location does have parking too.

Starting with margaritas (because obviously ‍), queso and chips that were dangerously good, and the chicken empanadas that came out perfectly crispy with so much flavor. We kept looking at each other after every bite like "okay wait... THIS is the best thing here" and then another plate would arrive and prove us wrong again The carnitas fried rice??? I genuinely cannot stop thinking about it. So savory, flavorful, comforting, and packed with crispy carnitas on top with the eggs and pickled onions... literally unreal. And then the skirt steak tacos absolutely stole the show. The steak was cooked perfectly, packed with flavor, and paired so perfectly with all the toppings and sauces. Every single bite tasted fresh and homemade in the best way possible. And can we talk about the ambience for a second because WOW. The music, the energy, the vibe inside, everyone celebrating, the drinks flowing -- it felt like the perfect Cinco de Mayo dinner spot. The service was also AMAZING from start to finish and made the entire experience even better. One of those dinners where you leave already talking about when you're coming back If you're looking for the place to celebrate Cinco de Mayo, date night, tacos & margaritas, or honestly just an incredible dinner in general... this is IT

I must admit that I had low expectations because quite frankly, I have not enjoyed Mexican food outside of Mexico or California. However, we were hungry, and it was near where we were staying, so I decided we should check it out, and I am so glad we did! The food was great. Both adults and the VERY picky children in our group all enjoyed our meals. I ordered the green chicken enchiladas and the other adult ordered a chile relleno combo, which I also got to try. Everything was delicious and devoured by all! We were so full but the owner talked us into the chocoflan, and we did not regret trying it. It was soooo good! Speaking of the owner, the service was great. We really enjoyed how he and the rest of the staff were very courteous. It is a small establishment, and it gets a good amount of people, so I assume that there are waits during peak hours. I highly recommend Sabroso! And we plan to return the next time we are in the area.

There's no parking lot, but we found free street parking on Erie Street right next to the restaurant. We'll definitely come back!

Appetizers were quac and chips, and shrimp ceviche. The guac was really good, but the ceviche was the star. Served on a bed of cucumbers, it was visually beautiful, and the flavor was fresh and complex. There was also a LOT of it. We ended up taking some home. Entrees were steak and shrimp for me, and Tampiquena for my friend. In both dishes, the steak was done to perfection. The sauce that came with my shrimp was spicy and deep--lots of flavor layers there. Both of us took home portions of our meals because there was a lot of food on the plates. Finally, the service--the servers are attentive without hovering. If we needed something, they were there, but never intrusive. It is hard to believe this is a little neighborhood spot, given the service and the quality of the food. It was not too busy tonight--we ate early--but I recommend reservations. It is very popular with the neighborhood. Bottom line, we each had 2 margaritas, appetizers, and entrees, and our bills with tip were around $105.00 each--totally worth it! Try this little gem--you won't regret it.

Most of the reviews recommended the enchiladas and we ordered a variety of them. The Enchiladas Poblanos stuffed with chicken and cheese. The poblano sauce was rich and smoky. We also had the Enchiladas Morita. They were filled with shrimp and cheese. It was so flavorful and the morita chile added so much flavor. Each dish was served with a side jicama salad. Their special was a shrimp pasta with lobster. It came with full lobster tail. The sauce was creamy and flavorful. It is also BYOB, which is a nice option. Only real negatives were that they did not offer any draft beer options and the Chips y Salsa ($3.75) had a meager quantity of chips to eat their tasty and generous tomatillo and 3-chile salsa options.
