chips & guac, tacos (birria, carne asada, carnitas, chorizo, and pastor)
    Linda H.

I've been here twice, once before the pandemic and the second time a couple days ago. I recall really liking it the first time, so I wanted to take my friend. It seems like they've remodeled the place and it looks very nice! We came on Taco Tuesday around 6pm to one party ahead of us in line. No one was dining in. We ordered chips, guac and of course, tacos (carne asada, carnitas, pastor, birria and chorizo). I don't recall which but only certain tacos were $1/ea. Comparing the two visits, they definitely cut the portion size of guac by more than half and the condiment bar is no longer in use. We asked for sauce and they gave us two bottles (green and red). The chips are good, they came out warm so you know it's fresh and there is some type of seasoning sprinkled on them. We liked all of the tacos except for the chorizo. The chorizo was chalky and did not taste good at all, we had to drown it in sauce for it to even be edible. The guacamole was good but not sure if worth the small portion size. I would definitely not get the chorizo again. Without the condiment bar, the tacos taste like they're missing something. I would come back, and ask if condiments are available next time!

Nope. Of all my reviews, I've rated Mexican and breakfast places the most. This is Mexican-owned and prices are not foo-foo Inner Portland, but that's where the positives end. Both the Huevos Rancheros and bacon breakfast burrito were subpar from the many, many I've tried. Tortillas seemed right out of the Cash and Carry bulk pack. The rice was awful. Sauces are limited to boring underwhelming Green and Red. Nice lady working the counter.

Our go to place for Mexican food. No frills and has a salsa bar. Decently priced as shown in the pics.

2 Fish Tacos price was 5.99$ Muy poco pescado!

Fish Tilapia Tacos for a price tag of 5.99$. 1.50$ a bite. Would take around 6 of these to fill your tummy. Over all flavor would be 6-10

Carne Asada taco and tripe taco

Mind blown that such a good taco place was so close to me the entire time. Just came by to grab a snack and ended up getting hooked on their tripe tacos. They really hook it up with the fresh sides and amazing chili oil. Place seemed clean and well managed too. Love the casual and quick atmosphere. I'm already planning on coming back tomorrow morning for more tripe tacos lol.

This place has surprisingly good chicken tacos. All the fixings are good too. It's a cute place to sit and the people are nice.

Both the fish and the prawns were cooked in a red sauce that was delicious! I meant to ask for blue corn tortillas but was so excited to find shrimp & fish tacos that weren't deep-fried that I forgot to ask for them. The regular corn tortillas were excellent, though, so it was not a bad mistake to make. I also had jamaica to drink and let me tell you... it was not made from a mix! It was dark, thirst-quenching, and perfectly made. Most jamaica is super sweet - this was not! I love the flavor of real hibiscus and this did not disappoint. My friends had chile relleno bowls and birria tacos, all of which was excellent. Their watermelon margaritas were tasty and refreshing! Our orders were taken by a helpful person at the cash register and the food was served quickly by a friendly server. The inside and outside areas were clean and tidy, with plenty of seating available at the outside tables. The outdoor seating area is under cover making it a good choice for both summer & winter dining. Definitely going on my "have to go back and try something else" list!

We ordered the Quekas with vegan chorizo and black beans and they were SO good, honestly a standout. The chips and guac were also a hit, and I loved that the guac was actually cold. Such a small detail that makes a big difference. The Citrus Salad was super fresh, crisp, and delicious, which balanced everything out perfectly. I also tried the NA classic margarita and it was so refreshing. I loved the subtle touch of orange juice. Overall, such a lovely spot with amazing food, great vibes, and thoughtful details. I will definitely be back!

For the amount of food and the overall experience, I thought it was a great way to experience the restaurant. Ángel took care of us and made the meal even more memorable by telling us the story and inspiration behind each dish as it came out. It made the tasting feel like much more than just trying a bunch of different dishes. I'm definitely a carnivore and usually feel like a meal needs some kind of meat, but surprisingly, my favorite dish was the mole with eggplant and rice. The mole was delicious, and I genuinely didn't miss having meat on the plate. I would happily order that dish again exactly as it was. The tomates en salsa arabe were another standout. I really enjoyed how fresh the dish tasted, especially with the seasonal tomatoes they were using. I also had the carnitas tacos, which had great flavor and texture. For dessert, we had what was essentially a fried concha, and I loved that it wasn't overly sweet. It had just the right amount of sweetness for me and was a great way to finish the meal. Overall, I highly recommend doing the full tasting menu at República. For around $40 per person, you get to experience the entire menu, and if you're lucky enough to have Ángel there to walk you through the stories and concepts behind the dishes, it makes the experience that much better.

Today my wife and I enjoyed scrumptious Tacotes, one chicken and one Bok Choy with house made salsa. Also, the Tetela de Requeson, maiz, beans and sprouting broccoli with a house made requeson - kind of like ricotta cheese - very beautifully plated and so delicious. Extra side of yummy and creamy black bean frijoles with sour cream, butter, tortillas. Instead of desert, the Mezcal, chile and lime was refreshing. Right now open for lunch Thursday through Sunday 10-3pm. No fixed menu, changes with what's fresh - the way chef Angel loves to cook respecting what is in season. Service and ambiance is friendly and knowledgeable about the food and its origin - another reason I love dining here so I learn about what I'm eating and how it was inspired. Yes, the food plated looks so good, I am inspired to dig in. There's a reason it was recognized early in its start by Eater, Portland Monthly and the Oregonian as one of the best restaurants in the city because foodies seek out and love to go where the food experience is special - especially the chef tasting menus in the past. Now I'm watchful and ready to go back and see what the chef Angel is serving up. What else is so special is Republica was a James Beard award nominee too!
