The food is great! But, they're hours are unpredictable, I called at 4 they told me they closed at 6 but, she retracted and said 5:30, that from 5:30-6 it's to go only. I pulled up at 5:30 to order to go and door was locked!!! Traveled from Greensboro to high point just to turn back around!! I may have caught this place on a bad day because I was a bit underwhelmed by the entire dining experience here. Like many such small Mexican restaurants that have sprung up is almost every area of Piedmont North Carolina, it is located in a small, worn building in a part of town that has decayed a great deal over the years, but the parking lot is fairly large, and getting in and out is easy. The inside is functional, with splashes of color on the walls to reduce & soften the starkness a bit, but only a bit. There is a narrow menu of Lunch Specials, a few posted Daily Specials, and a larger main menu is also available - the cumulative result is a decent variety, but not nearly as broad as some. There are a number of traditional Mexican dishes, as well as a number of Tex - Mex type offerings. Staffing is at a minimum, so if it gets busy, or you order off the main menu, things get a bit slow. We chose the Pork Ribs in Verde Sauce (includes Rice, Beans, Salad, and a few tortilla chips, from the main menu), and 2 CarnitasTacos (also includes Rice & Beans, from the lunch menu). We also ordered Chips & Salsa, as a starter - yeap, you pay for it! And we ordered a Chile Relleno as a side item. The salsa is rather chunky, and has as much heat as any I've ever tried. The chips are excellent - a bit thick, fresh tasting, and they are salted. The time for our order to come out of the kitchen was rather, over 20 minutes for the Pork Ribs, almost 10 minutes more for the 2 tacos - yeap, served the meals that far apart. The pork ribs were a major disappointment - lacked tenderness, a bit on the bland side without help, and were streaked with sinew. The carnitas in the tacos had a very nice outside crust, but also lacked any real flavor - this is a single tortilla item, and comes apart easily. The rice and beans were average. The Chile Relleno, which contained only cheese as a filling, was awful, floating in a thick, undistinguished sauce. There are a number of things that don't set right here, for me at least. The tacos I ordered off the Lunch menu had to contain the same meat - that's simply BS! There is a 50 cent charge for take out boxes for leftovers, and as I mentioned, you pay for the chips and salsa. And the service was generally poor. All things considered, I'm not sure I'll come back here, we'll see. Deep down, 3 stars seems a stretch, frankly. read more

Three stars because if anything it's authentic. Three tacos for lunch, one Asada, one Carnitas, one Al Pasture. Simple topping of shredded radish and either parsley or cilantro. The meats were excellently prepared. A good green sauce, not too hot. The red sauce was hot! Came here because of one review that we saw. So happy that we did come here because the food is extremely fresh and truly authentic. Everything that we had from the burritos to the tostadas to the tacos are made incredibly well and very tasty. Friendly service and nice casual atmosphere. Also very reasonable prices. This place is fantastic and the people are so nice, you can tell they take great pride in doing a very good job. I have tried a few other items none of which have I been disappointed with. But this place is just what it is, small, fresh, simple and down to earth good. Nothing fancy. And the price is right. No tablecloths here. If you want gourmet Mexican go to Durham. They think they know what it is. And if your idea of an experience is lacking here, then maybe the bar is set too high. And FYI, there is nothing on the menu that resembles Tex-Mex in the slightest. But if want some good decent Mexican food, this place is up to the challenge. read more

This was my first visit, but it definitely won't be my last! I had homemade horchata to drink, which is absolutely delicious, and I recommend that to anyone who loves horchata. My friend and I shared a queso dip and chips. The chips were yummy and so was the cheese. I had a variety tray of tacos - pollo, el pastor, and barbacoa. I'm usually not a big fan of red meat, but I ordered from the recommendation of my friend and I ended up enjoying the el pastor and the barbacoa more than the pollo. The tacos were on homemade tortillas and they were topped in the traditional way (cilantro, onions, radishes, and lime). SO GOOD!! This is just a tiny little dive on the side of the road, but I can't wait to go back! read more

This place was recommended to me by someone going there for years, and loves authentic Mexican. He warned me that it's not much to look at - so much that you might prefer to drive by it - it's not in the best area either. Going inside isn't much better - She could certainly use some decorating tips inside (and out). But we decided to stick it out - per recommendation, and I'm glad we did. The food was amazing. I had chicken gorditas, and my wife had a bean and cheese burrito entree. Couldn't have been better. The salsas were great too (green and red), with a little heat to them. I wouldn't recommend this place. Went in to order papusa but they only had with pork so decided against it. As we wanted to try vegeterian food today we asked the girl in the front for recommendations. She suggested to order veggie burrito, which normally comes with rice, beans, onion, cilantro, cheese, lettuce, etc. I chose not to add cilantro the girl asked us if we were okay with cheese inside I said yes. I also ordered 2 veggie tacos same way. She told us it would take 15 mins. We got our food for almost 25 minutes later. We has the order to go when we checked it in the car. It was just vegetables, not grilled, just plain steamed vegetables. No salt or seasoning. No lettuce, cheese, rice or beans or anything else we were told. It was horrible. Took couple of bites and threw out the rest. There is a big sign in this restaurant that says check your order before you leave I suggest you all do that. Don't make the same mistake we did. Isn't that the kind of place you'd find Bourdain visiting some locals, knocking back some drinks and tacos? Well, they couldn't have been any nicer and hospitable! Your Spanish dictionary doesn't have to be dusted off real well, as they are probably used to the average person coming in who may struggle with that! Make no mistake though, this is pretty authentic Mexican! They make their corn tortillas in house and it shows! We got the free chips and bean dip that comes with a check in. Since it was lunch, we ordered off of the board that has their lunch specials that run from 11-3 each day. We tried tacos ranging from chicken, steak, carnitas, and pastor! All were very good, but the winner was between the carnitas and pastor! Both had just incredible flavored meat and each taco is garnished differently. The steak was really good as well and came garnished with sautéed onions. Each plate came with rice and beans, and the rice was just spot on! Your not walking into an Americanized Mexican joint that will bring chips and salsa to your table as you sit down. And to that I say, fabuloso! Read the reviews and decided to try it out. My wife went along and whem we pulled into the parking lot she looked at me with a wondering eye. Area of town is not the best but once inside, we erased all doubts. Clean and family friendly. I ordered the burritos and my wife had the pollo tacos. Excellent service as the wait staff explained the menu in detail and frequently checked on us. The burritos were very good although I could only eat one. The owners gave us complimentary nachos to start with. My wife loved her pollo tacos. The pico de gallo caught me off guard as there were fresh cut jalapenos mixed in and I choked on a bit of it so a coughing fit ensued. Nice atmosphere and really good food.
