So at least four employees have already heard this story, but my girlfriends and I got home with several pounds of fully thawed food in soggy boxes, so I figured I'll tell it one more time here. This was our trip to Target tonight:
Get to the registers, only reasonable line is at the self checkouts, which we don't mind so we got in line. Get to the register and scan $220 worth of stuff, about half of which is frozen food. Scan our coupons. Realize that the two pairs of jeans we had were did not ring up as buy one get one half off per the current sale. Call the guy over to ask why and if he could fix it. Guy blindly presses every single button on the screen, including the produce menu, because I guess a sale on jeans might be hidden in there somewhere. I don't this kid had ever used these machines as a customer, he had definitely never used them as an employee. He's just pressing things at random, with no idea what the buttons did, and apparently unable to guess by, ya know, reading them. Guy voids and air pump we bought, apparently thinking it was the jeans, has us rescan. Guy voids one of the lines that says "JEANS" in it... Has us rescan, no change no discount. Guy presses buttons at random a little more. Guy tries to check out with my card in the chip reader, realizes what he's doing, tries to cancel while machine says "authorizing", card reader is asking for a signature, he also tries to hit cancel on there a few times. Guy takes my card out, his both "Cancel" buttons a few more times. Waits several minutes, tells us the machine is frozen and that we need to rescan everything at another register. Fine. We go to another self scan and start rescanning. We realize that we already put our coupons in the first machine, ask if he can get them back out for us kind of knowing what the answer would be, which it was: "nah..." Same problem with the jeans, but we don't even bother, figure we'll just go to customer service and get them to give us the sale. We just check out. Meanwhile, guy is opening up original machine and doing who knows what inside of it. As we're loading out bags into our cart, guy comes over and hands me a receipt, says simply, "it went through." So at this point, I think it was fair that I was losing my patience, I had just been over charged by over $220, I ask if he can reverse it, he says, and I quote, "no, you need to call your credit card company and get them to cancel the payment" - what?! Yes, because I can just call my credit card company any time and tell them I've decided not to pay for something and they'll just cancel it. Yeah. That's exactly how that works. So I says no, I can't cancel, you need to, and he tells me to go to guest services. Which is where we were gonna end up all along anyway I guess. So we went over there, told this whole scenario to the girl behind the desk. She got flustered, called for help. We waited. The guy who eventually came over said some things, checked some things on a computer. We waited. He realized the first things he had said weren't true, called for help as well. We waited. Lady showed up, listened to the story, told them what to do out of ear shot. We waited. Gives receipts back to first girl and goes in back. Girl tells us she's going to return the receipt with the lower amount (i.e. The one WITH our coupons on it, before we lost them) We protest, after nearly half an hour at customer service, we are at least get what we started all of this for. She gets flustered, calls the last lady back out, she comes back, listens to our story, has the nerve to now ask "wait, did you pay for everything twice?" Which is exactly the problem we've been trying to solve this whole time. I have no idea what she thought it was the first time she addressed it.... Tells the girl to refund the second receipt instead. Finally the girl gives me a refund for the second order. One. Item. At. A. Time. We waited. Tells us that's everything. I ask why the amount returned doesn't equal the amount paid. We go back and forth for 5 minutes. Didn't the item she missed. And finally she also gave us the buy one get one 50% off deal that started everything.
The time stamp on the first receipt, after we'd shopped and rung everything up, is 6:07. The time stamp on the final return slip is 6:41. Program your machines wrote. Do let untrained people run the machines. And do something about your customer service process.
I don't know what else I can say. Except that *everything* we bought today could have been bought for the same price at other stores in the same plaza. And next time it will be. Going to three different stores is actually more convenient than going to one, when the one is the South Bay Target. read more
