The quarantine has caused chaos with the basics of my self-care. Not long before the pandemic, I'd managed to squeeze in an eye appointment thanks to my employer's wellness clinic but I'd yet to figure out where I was actually going to get glasses. I'm also in the market for a new eye doc as mine had relocated to a little bit farther north than I'm willing to go.
I was excited to see that the Target at Glendale Town Center was putting in an optical department in the midst of some interior upgrades. The upgrades seemed to get a bit delayed once the pandemic hit, but then everything got going and this optical department finally opened up.
Dr. Abigail David is the doctor here. She was recently nominated for Best Optometrist in the Indy Star's "Best Things 2020" reader's poll. She's got a reputation for being thorough and friendly. As I had my prescription already, I didn't see her but plan to do so the next time I'm due.
This department is located sort of between the housing supplies and right before the grocery. They seem to have built in the space. It's not really a very large department, but I went in and checked them out and actually liked a couple of the frames I saw. The staff was friendly and answered a few questions I had. I checked my insurance and they were on my plan.
I had to find my prescription, but when I did I went back in and quickly found a pair of frames I liked. I was fitted and paid a bit over $100 out of pocket. I did go above my allowable amount per insurance, but am happy with the fact that my glasses have all the options I'm used to having.
The department is fairly open concept - the counter's a bit tall, but they have an end that's pretty wheelchair friendly. I got a brief glimpse at the exam room - it doesn't look quite as wheelchair friendly, but my guess is there are ways to adapt.
I was told it would likely be around 10 days as we were getting into the holidays. It was right around 10 days. I was called, went in, got adjustments, and was out the door. They offer an insurance plan for their glasses and will generally do adjustments.
Not even a month after getting my new glasses, I had one of those "oops" moments when I ran over my glasses with my wheelchair. There's nothing quite as painful as that crunching sound. I was convinced they couldn't be salvaged.
I went in and was super impressed they fixed them and did so with top-notch customer service and no shaming. Of course, they probably talked about me afterwards. But, hey. What do I care? I was gone.
Seriously, though. I'm super impressed. It's very convenient. It's open concept and accessible. The frame selection is high quality. The prices are reasonable and they're on a lot of insurance plans. I look forward to transferring to Dr. David in the future. Both purchasing and getting a repair were positive experiences and I'll definitely be going back in the future.
I'm also feeling really, really bad because I can't remember the optical assistant's name and she's been super helpful x2. You know who you are. You're awesome! read more
