Tart Baking Company is owned by Shelburne Falls and Catalpa Coffee- all three being alternate coffee stores in Noho. This means, that the coffee you get here is going to be Catalpa roasted beans, but with a higher selection of "fancy" pastries. (The apricot croissant I had was very very delicious. ) I do not love Catalpa espresso as much as Shelburne Falls coffee, because it has a very sweet taste with a bitter finish, I prefer something that is more of an earthy or mellow light roast. Just smelling the ground coffee makes you think of something flowery and sharp. They have limited breakfast sandwiches and a few drink specials that remind me of what they have over at Catalpa . Unfortunately, because all three stores are linked, that means none of them have soy milk anymore, which is my go to espresso add-in. It is even still on the sign at the counter. The staff is friendly, and it's at a nice spot near where Shelburne Falls used to be. Their main advertisement is their croissant, so four stars for having a super delicious croissant. For not having any seating, and advertising soy milk and having any, one star deduction. read more

Croissants are often overcooked or stale. This place used to be a gem, but has gone downhill over the past year or so. Got an almond croissant and it was very dark on the bottom - so disappointed. Cookies were good but expensive. They used to have such a variety of pastries and other baked goods. Now, it is hit or miss. Whomever is baking the croissants needs some training. Got a spinach feta croissant which used to be a favorite of ours, but was almost black on the bottom/inedible. Looked ok in the case. So sad this bakery no longer lives up to the standards it set in the past. read more

Excellent sourdough bread. Offers many different variations of croissants. I tried an apricot, an almond and a plain. My assessment is that all were good, but none were exceptional. It is more typical to find almond and apricot filling in a more traditional "danish" type pastry. Both apricot and almond fillings were generous, however Tart's croissants tend to be on the heavier side of what I consider typical of a croissant. All had a buttery component, and all were flaky, just more dense than I prefer. Would I go again? Sure, but with different expectations. read more

Came here to try their "famous" almond croissant. $4 each is as expensive as NYC but sadly the quality isn't anywhere close. The shell was soft and soggy. Dough was sour, dense and greasy. Almond paste was neither enough nor evenly filled. Service was mediocre. The staff barely talked to me. No seats or wifi so I only got a croissant to go instead of sitting down with a coffee. Unfortunately this place is run like the worst cafeteria and at high prices. Staff very inexperienced learning from bad manager... and don't think it's better if you call ahead. An order can just disappear because of confused folks running the front counter and even manager messes up as well with excuses ... Saying "oh well human error"! They do nothing to keep customers returning. We're gone and so are friends! Very disappointed even more so from No apology just well "this" happens. Just bought one of the poorest croissants I have had in years. I have purchased croissants from this store in the past, and they used to be wonderful but this one was doughy, not flaky, and very unbuttery. At four dollars a plain croissant it is not worth the money anymore. Get a better baker for this product or your former good reputation will go downhill. read more

I've been here about four times now and every single time I've been there there has been a short line and like three or four people working behind the counter and yet every time the service is not slow and I have to wait so long. I stopped in for the first time yesterday for a snack with my son chase. He had a chocolate cupcake with strawberry frosting - which he devoured. I got the feta and fennel croissant which was OUT OF THIS WORLD!! I tend not to order croissants because most bakeries produce a disappointing version, but at Tart the croissant was flaky, buttery and crunch in all the right places. The feta and fennel filling was also just right and not overpowering. The food was 5 star, but I knocked off one star because the staff wasn't exactly filled with holiday spirit and largely ignored me, but I will be back. read more

I love this adorable coffee shop in Northampton. To begin, they have an awesome selection of baked goods and other flaky pastries and snacks. The chocolate croissants are to-die for. For the last few days, my friend and I have been stopping in for lattes and hot cocoa, and I'm continually impressed by how genuinely good the coffee is. My friend insists the have the best lattes in town! There's no actual seating in this airy shop- just two tables that you can stand at and chat. The windows leave a nice view of downtown Northampton and makes for some fabulous people watching. This place gives off great neighborhood vibes and is smack in the middle of other boutiques, bookstores and local shopping. Also, with Smith College right up the road, lots of college kids will be going in and out. While there's no shortage of coffee options in Northampton, this is one I would make time to visit! read more

As someone who has spent a lot of time in France I can tell you the croissants here are as good as they get. The Almond Croissant is my favorite and may be the best I have ever had - anywhere. The plain and chocolate croissants are top notch also and stand up to any I have had. The apricot one was not my fave ...but I don't love apricots! Chocolate chip cookies are very good as are other cookies. The breads are excellent and very old world style. They also make meat stuffed pies which are delicious. The staff is super, very friendly and very Noho. If there are any negatives it is that the coffee is just average and you can't really sit or hang out to eat your tasty treats. This was a cool little bakery with a small but fresh selection of goodies. We scooped some rugelach, shortbread, and cupcakes. The rugelach was some of the best I've ever had, and I'd likely stop back when in town just for these. The shortbread was also buttery and flaky, and near perfect. The cupcakes, well, the cupcakes exist in a current world of superstar cupcakes, and unfortunately they weren't at all memorable, but they were totally fine. The prices were a bit high, making Tart a difficult place to scoop pastries for a large crowd unless you have a hefty budget. However, it's a cool place to grab a cup of coffee and personal pastry snack when you feel like indulging. read more

Dropped in a little after 1130AM on a Wednesday. It was quiet in the shop, but they were already running low on pastries. I grabbed the last apricot croissant to go and was surprised by the weight of it. I warmed it up at home at 350F for ~5 minutes. The outside was wonderfully crispy while the inside was still soft and chewy. I had imagined the filling to be a sweet apricot jam, but it was actually more tart than expected with real apricot slices. Even so, I would've preferred a greater filling to pastry ratio. After leaving the Pie Bar, I came to Tart baking company and have just finished the flourless chocolate tart and the line tart with meringue. Holy cow! Buy these and eat them, your life will be better! The lime tart had an unexpected dollop of chocolate that not everyone loved, but enough of us did that we managed to eat it all. Also the triple chocolate cookie we had was close to the best cookie I've ever eaten. Is this a sourdough croissant? The almond croissant had a sort of tart (no pun intended) flavor - not an asset, in my opinion. The filling is ground almonds, not almond paste. Service was kind of snippy, but it was the end of the day, maybe they were tired. read more
