We have been to Tary 3 times. Their food is pretty and enticing, but the prices are high, portions are small and the food is inconsistent. With the exception of the cinnamon roll (which is exceptional) we have never had a dish here that was any better than disappointing in flavor, preparation and/or portion size. Most recently, I ordered their baked eggplant dish only to be served a barely warm, unbaked, cold and raw undercooked eggplant-- no evidence of the salsa or tomato the menu seemed to promise-- even on the side. No evidence of baking either. I inquired if this was as intended; the server politely indicated the dish had not been prepared properly and offered to take it back. I then watched as she tried to explain how eggplant is normally prepared to the staff. At this point, I chose something else to replace it. While everyone we've dealt with there has always been polite and warm, to our eyes, the kitchen--and the counter staff who often do not know how to explain a unique menu item-- needs training and consistent, focused managerial supervision. After three tries, we think something is amiss. We would like to support this owner who is plainly trying to do something different, but were we to go again, at this point all we would order is the cinnamon roll. read more

The interior of this coffee shop is quite charming, and I appreciate the unique selection on the menu. They offer a variety of coffee, tea, pastries, sandwiches, and salads. I tried a chai and a Kattama, which, despite being listed under the bakery section, turned out to be more savory than sweet. The service here was both quick and friendly. Latte was ok, nothing to write home about. We tried the baursaqs and they were ok. These are yeasty little balls filled with irimshik filling (cottage cheese-like). Tary coffee is definitely a cool and unique spot. I enjoyed the ambiance. The food is hit or miss. I liked baursak. It was soft and plushy. The cinnamon roll didn't have enough layers and crunchiness and the texture was more like bread (vs pastry). For drinks we got latte and macchiato and latte was ok (nothing special but nothing bad) but macchiato was particularly bad. It was extremely bitter and burnt. I couldn't even finish my tiny cup. My friend tasted it too and agreed it was particularly bad. Also, everything is pricy. And they don't tell you when you pay that they add some added fees if you pay with credit card vs cash. I didn't know that was possible these days. Lastly, the service is very slow. We had to wait over 30 min for those food and drinks to be fully served (there wasn't even a line when we ordered). I noticed they were prioritizing all the takeout orders and all the people eating in were getting their food very slowly- even though they ordered before takeout orders. Other folks sitting near us also complained. We had to ask for our glasses of water 3 times too. And each time I asked the server asked how many glasses I want. Seemed like the requests were just wiped out. It wasn't that busy so i was left confused. I think there are definitely improvements to be made in the operations and food/drinks. But spots like these are unique and good to have in Chicago. I really hope they can make improvements and things get better since there is potential. read more

(I feel like potato is usually filler in dishes like this). it was also a huge filling and I got 3 meals out of it. Staff mentioned they'd clean it but we kept waiting and waiting until finally a cleaner table opened up and we sat there instead. I got the coffee the cinnamon roll the pancakes and the scrambled eggs to share and it was absolutely delicious. I wasn't sure what to expect but the cinnamon roll was flaky, but not too sweet.the real stand out were the cottage cheese pancakes that were dense and cheesy tangy. I just slightly sweet. Coffee comes with a waffle cookie that's just crispy and delightful. There's plenty of seating though turning to get busy when I left you order at the counter and then find a seat and they bring you your food. It's light air and unlike anything I ever had before.
