I wanted to like this place. I really did. However, this place is very mediocre when it comes to the two most important factors: quality options and service. As a Vietnamese style tea place, I am forgiven for expecting to be able to get perfect Vietnamese coffee. Their version is TOO WEAK and creamy. They ask if I "needed any adjustments" but, this is just for show. When I asked them to make mine just a tad stronger ( as I am used to moist Vietnamese restaurants making it) she would only add 2 oz for an extra charge. I chose that option and it was a little better but it STILL a bit too weak. - So, what was this "adjustment" I was asked about? - RIDICULOUS! I was served by the assistant supervisor and felt that she could learn a thing or two about customer service. She was bossy and didn't leave me with a warm feeling. I did NOT feel appreciated as a customer and it pushed me to go to the MANY OTHER OPTIONS available in Costa Mesa and will be recommending OTHER places to my friends, clients, and acquaintances from now on. This place is NOT a good value at all. And for several weeks they were completely out of green tea yet, there was no notification on the menu. I have given this place a fair trial by coming back 5 times to give it a fair chance. But, each time, they would wait to be asked for the option before informing me that they didn't have it (any items that contained tea in them). read more

Review #167 - 2019 After my disappointment that Confetti didn't have my favorite cheesecake custard, I had to find something else to fill the void so I decided to walk over to Tastea & see what they had that might be able to help alleviate some of that disappointment. They have a lot of fruit tea, but nothing stood out for me so I decided to get the avocado avalanche in a 20oz. I thought about getting the 32oz, but I'm so glad I didn't because it was huge! The drink was actually very well made. You can taste the freshness of the avocado & it was blended very well so there was no ice chunks whatsoever! My kids love lychee everything and this lychee slush here is one of their favorite. With shaved ice, bits of lychee and lychee jelly. Just the right amount of sweetness and a burst of flavor. Tastea is one of my all time favorite boba places! I've been going to Tastea since high school, and I've grown to love it more and more over the years. Not only do they have refreshing fruit teas and delicious snacks, but they also cultivate such a great community and commitment to their customers! DRINKS My go-to drinks here tend to be the Peach Me Sweetea and The Unknown with Lychee Jelly. I always reduce the sweetness to about 25% and opt for stevia now that they offer that! Other drinks I've enjoyed are Strawberry Ecsteasy and their Thai Matcha! I really don't think you can go wrong with any of their drinks though--it's just personal preference! I would definitely get the honey boba though--it's always perfectly chewy and just the right amount of sweetness! I know some people think their drinks are a tad bit pricey, but I think they're totally reasonable because nobody makes fruit teas like they do! FOOD I'm a huge French fry lover, and Tastea's buttloada fries is one of my favorites! The only complaint I have here is that the portion they give can be a little inconsistent at times (sometimes it's truly a buttload with the container overflowing and me finding some stragglers in my bag and other times it just barely reaches the top). Usually when I'm getting a little less I've noticed that it's because multiple people have ordered fries and they're a little swamped, so it's understandable and still totally worth the price. Regardless, every time I order their fries they taste AMAZING! SERVICE I have never had a reason to complain about the service here. The staff is always so welcoming and incredibly patient (I have my go-to drinks but can be a little indecisive after times). I once ordered a drink and it was a bit too bland for me (totally my fault for the sweetness level I ordered), and the guy who served me happily offered to sweeten up my drink a bit! Not personal experience, but my sister once ended up waiting about 10 minutes for her drink (not that long at all) and they gave her a voucher for a free drink and were extremely apologetic! It's totally clear that they value your experience. PARKING Because it's the Crossroads plaza, there is plenty of parking and I have never had a problem! Decent quality, prices on par with other tea places nearby, attractive employees, all good! I stopped by one afternoon for a large jasmine green milk tea with 50% sweet, less ice, and aloe. I was initially concerned that it might be too sweet (from visits to other Tastea branches). The employee let me taste a sample at 50% sweetness and offered to make 25% if the 50% was too much. For a simple jasmine green milk tea it was fine, and I think the higher sweetness becomes a concern if the drink is flavored (peach green tea for example). What really put me off was the fact that their buttload's fries aren't vegetarian. It's fried in some sort of animal fat and the seasoning has some meat flavoring. My bf is a strict vegetarian so if anything uses fish sauce, fried in meat fat, or touches meat - he won't eat. I'm less picky, but I wasn't expecting FRENCH FRIES to be non-vegetarian. It wasn't noted anywhere (which I can't really blame Tastea for that) but my bf had one fry, had a weird feeling, and then asked a worker to confirm. Man, it's been ages since I've had Tastea and the nearest location at the time I went was Garden Grove. SO GLAD to see Tastea right in my hood! I wanted to grab some tea after lunch, so we headed here for some refreshments. The spot is clean, bright and green. Menus are on the wall and on the window panel. The omes located nearest to the cash register at eye level are much easier to see! Toward the back of the establishment, they have a chalkboard wall with summer favorites listings. The illustrations are quite cute and there's a little dinosaur that reads "monstrositea!" What a fun pun. Initially, I was craving watermelon or lychee, but there seasonal offering caught my attention. The chamelon is similar to cha-mango, so I indulged. Think watermelon dusted with lucas or a chili salt. You get sweet, salty and spicy all in one go. Absolutely fantastic and it totally hit the spot. If you are addicted to boba like I am, then you have to check out this place. It is located in a small plaza with various stores including Ramen Yamada and Stater Bros. which makes it convenient if you need a meal or do some grocery shopping along with your boba run. The place is clean and fresh looking which is always a good thing. I usually get the Peach Me Sweet Tea or the Jasmine Milk Tea with honey boba. Both are really good so give them a try if you haven't had them yet. The drinks I've tried were better compared to some other places since the teas weren't as diluted with water, which is really annoying. The last thing I want is to pay $4-5 for really watered down tea. And this place actually makes their milk teas well because the Tapioca Express (and some other places) down the road makes them taste like chocolate milk or something weird. Apparently they aren't serving any food right now due to some supply constraints so don't come here hungry! Also, they apparently changed their drink size designations. I accidentally bought a 32 oz drink because I thought that was the equivalent to the "even more" size, but boy was I in for a surprise when I got my drink. It was pretty huge (I'll upload a picture onto their page) and it made sense why they drink was over $5. I just thought they hiked up their prices but a ton haha. As a UC Irvine Tastea loving Anteater when this location opened up in Costa Mesa, my Tastea loving soul smiled. & This review has been a long time coming. The best thing about this location is CONVENIENCE. No longer do we have to make the trek to get our Tastea fix to Garden Grove when this location opened up. Plus, there's plenty of parking so you need not worry if you're making the trip! It's also conveniently located next to Ramen Yamadaya and Confetti if you either want to double your sweet noms fix or get boba as dessert after a bowl of ramen! Despite my love for Tastea & their drinks, I can't help but give this location only three stars. While I remain a frequent visitor of the Costa Mesa location, every time I go there is an inconsistency in the flavors or the sweetness of my drinks. I think the worst experience I had was when I ordered one of my usual drinks, a honeydew milk tea, and was in for the rude awakening of finding the clots of light green flavoring floating in my drink. I guess the employees were in a rush when they were making my drink and didn't have the time to thoroughly mix it all together. I must say, however, that the employees are cheerful and helpful despite the inconsistency in their drinks! Customer service is a BIG thing to me, so the convenience of this location in proximity to UCI and the fact that sometimes I need my fix, keeps me coming back for more! My personal favorites? I usually go to the Garden Grove location, but this place is nice and fast too. Anna, the cashier, was really nice and let me know that there's a rewards program. I've been to Tastea a lot and no one's ever talked about the rewards card thing. Anyway, she was great and worked really fast. The only greivance I have is that they don't give a lot of toppings. I got egg pudding and it's honestly an ice cream scoop amount. You're better off going to Snow Monster for lots of toppings. I got the Gold Milk Tea which is really sweet organic black tea. The tea taste wasn't super strong and will probably give you diabetes compared to 7leaves or Milk Bar's milk tea. But all in in all, service was fast and really nice. It genuinely pains me to write a review like this for a Tastea location. I believe this Tastea Costa Mesa location does not reflect the excellence in boba and drinks that Tastea is known for. Tastea Costa Mesa is perhaps the 5th Tastea location I've visited/evaluated. But let's start with the basics. Tastea Costa Mesa is located in a convenient location in Costa Mesa near the 405, 55, and 5 freeway. It is in a large plaza and you won't be hard pressed to find parking. The interior is spacious with plenty of seating for large groups, though not so much for those just waiting to take their drinks to go. Last call for food orders is 1 hour prior to closing and hot foods have sales tax added. Also plenty of lighting inside compared to other Tastea's. I came here after dinner with a friend and we ordered a total of three drinks. We ordered The Unknown, Peach Me Sweetea, and Sunset Peach. To say I was underwhelmed is an understatement. I'd like to give the benefit of the doubt and state that perhaps this was just a bad night, but too many things essential to Tastea fruit teas were not up to standard. 1. The honey boba, which is usually the perfect qq texture and sweetness at other Tastea locations, was overcooked. No doubt about it. Noticeably gummy, soft texture. A gelatinous, chewy mess that made me think I was chewing on mochi instead of boba. Unacceptable. Either a new batch should have been made (and tasted!!) or customers should have been informed that the boba was out. Though it did have the right about of honey sweetness. 2. The inconsistent amount of fruit. Not going to lie and say that Tastea's fruit tea base is the best tea I've had. What makes Tastea's fruit teas special is the fresh fruit bits that they add to their teas. I'll post some pictures, but you can see in The Unknown and Sunset Peach that the amount of fruit given is barely an inch at the bottom of the cup. I thought maybe this was the standard at this particular location. But! I noticed in another person's order that the amount of fruit given was up to the Tastea's logo on the cups and even in my friend's Peach Me Sweetea, they had higher amounts of fruit. 3. Unripened fruit. The Sunset Peach I ordered comes with mango bits and the fruit had such an unpleasant texture. It was too firm and tasted like shavings from a green, not-yet-ripe mango. I was so disappointed in my drink that I requested it to be replaced by a Peach Me Sweetea. Again, the strawberry bits were fine but the peach parts were too firm. The workers were more than happy to switch out my order. I made sure not to ask for their honey boba because it would most likely be from the same gelatinous batch. The foundation of a boba place lies in their tea and their boba. I could say today must have been a bad night, but I expect much more from a Tastea location. I might return to this location one day to see if it improves out of loyalty to the brand. The only reason I'm not giving this location a 2 is because of the workers' accomodation of my drink replacement. read more
