Super cute spot to grab a coffee in this shopping center, which you definitely need for a whole day of furniture shopping! I went with the Spring fling, very floral without being too artificial. [[HIGHLIGHT]]It's just a little kiosk so there's really not too much seating aside from a little bar area but there's more seating in this indoor shopping area (and also some spots outdoors too).[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Was definitely the little pick me up I needed on a Saturday afternoon shopping trip.

Went to this place over the weekend to stop by after an event. [[HIGHLIGHT]]This place is located in a building with other different shops around. It's a small shop but so cute around it.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] [[HIGHLIGHT]]There's space to sit outside and just relax as well.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] [[HIGHLIGHT]]The place has a lot of open space.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] [[HIGHLIGHT]]When we went it was somewhat busy.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] We got the new wave if im not mistaken which was a brown sugar Shaken Espresso with their special foam on top. I took a sip of it directly from the lid trying to get everything with the foam but I didnt like it as much as when I mixed everything. I really liked the drink mixed with the foam. [[HIGHLIGHT]]Such a cute spot.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] I am curious of where they source their coffee from and I've read a little bit about how their techniques are inspired from Japan on how they make their coffee. But, would try other things on the menu as well. They also have pastries which I haven't tried yet.

Banana latte and chai tea latte
Vanessa T.

After seeing all the reviews, we decided to check out this roastery. I got their seasonal drink which was the banana latte and my husband got the chai tea latte. The banana was very light and didnt have much banana flavor. I also think the roast wasnt too strong and was a bit too light for me. It gave me a sour aftertaste too which i wasnt a fan of. My husband got the chai latte and that was really good. It was very creamy and smooth. Very refreshing on a hot day. The workers werent that friendly and their menu selection was minimal.

Almond Croissant
Raven R.

[[HIGHLIGHT]]This place is located in a nice area with lots of seating.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] They're fairly busy on weekends so expect a bit of a wait. The staff is friendly and efficient. I ordered an oatmilk latte and almond croissant. Oatmilk Latte- Sweet and creamy with a good hit of espresso. A nice, hot drink when you're trying to wake up. Almond Croissant- Pastry is nice and fluffy with a light crisp outside. It has an almond custard filling inside that has a lovely flavor. You also get a topping of crunchy slivered almonds for extra texture. Great place for coffee and pastries!

Gingerbread latte was good Drink : 5/5 Service: 5/5 [[HIGHLIGHT]]Ambience: 5/5[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] I recommend it to you

Fall spice Latte
Maggie H.

The barista recommended the seasonal fall spice latte, which is the tastiest rendition of the PSL that I've ever had! They make their own sweet potato puree and top the drink off with this delicious marshmallow whip that I could eat a whole bowl of. Wish this was a year-round option so I could come back anytime for this. This latte was 8 dollars so prices are steep here, but service is quick and friendly. You can also order food/drinks from a few other spots around here, since this is set up as a higher-end food court.

Kyoto style Brewing
Winn H.

Ooh where do I start with Portola Coffee Roasters? For starters, I unexpectedly found this while looking for a cafe to work in. [[HIGHLIGHT]]I enjoyed that here was Wi-Fi in this food court area of the plaza.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Ordering and pick-up are fairly straightforward with their hanging and standing signs... impressive given its circular shop setup - they really thought this through! Coffee? Amazing! Their espresso is bold - not too acidic or sour - and captures the right amount of sweetness, nuttiness, and caffeine to make it a delectable afternoon pick-me-up. In addition to their caffeine is their teamwork; I've never seen baristas work so closely in a cramped space. All staff members juggled their downtime with efficiency to churn out drinks. And for any science geeks / chemists out there, their Kyoto brewing system was a sight to see, I'm definitely interested in trying a Kyoto cold brew next time! They're one of my favorite styles of coffee - tasty and aesthetically pleasing.

Iced Matcha Tea Latte
Dan P.

Iced matcha latte - I got it unsweetened but I recommend getting it sweetened bc drink was very milky w subtle matcha flavor. Matcha not sour or bitter. Located in OC mix with lots of open space seatings and shops. Great study spot but didn't see much outlets. Decent WiFi, easy parking.

Iced vanilla latte, spinach artichoke danish
Michelle T.

Early morning pick up. Got an iced vanilla latte + spinach+artichoke danish. Both are very tasty. The vanilla latte looks really light but had a good kick of caffeine surprisingly. Good location with tons of parking, most likely will come back! I wanna try their matcha.

2 cans of basic "healthy" soda (8% real juice) which is mostly water were $9.70!
David R.

Really. Sadly. Nothing special. $9 for a 12 oz mediocre latte PLUS tip shoved in your face online. Ordered online. System prompts for tip %. Zero $0.00 tip is not an option. You have to click "other" and physically type in 0.00 Worse yet -- the coffee is bleh. A bit acidic. [[HIGHLIGHT]]And served with lots of weird vibes and goth leftovers with a side of hipster wanna bee.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] No sense of urgency or give a crap from anyone behind the counter. And. The prices!!!! Omfg. The prices!! I've paid less for better coffee at sports events and airports. Why rip people off so much!?

Maritza S.

They have the best espresso beans. I make my own lattes at home and having the right beans makes a huge difference. It's definitely worth the 25 minute drive.

Flat White
Adriana M.

I walked in around 8am and it wasn't too busy! Didn't have to wait in line long! They attend me very nicely! Service was friendly! I ordered a flat white and they got it out fast! I enjoyed my flat white!! The place is nice with a great seating area!

Good lattes good mochas, a little expensive for the surrounding competition... and low stock of things on the shelves which is a bummer.

Ask the Community - Portola Coffee Roasters

Does this location accept Bitcoin payments?

Not that I'm aware of. Apple Pay yes

Does this place have vegan donuts? They had the best Portola coffee at Pacific City and I am so glad there's another close by :)

Yes, Portola has vegan donuts. I bought one yesterday.

Does anyone know when they plan on extending their hours back to normal? Kind of ridiculous how early they close now

Is decaf available?

Yes, Portola makes decaf drinks and has decaf roast beans for sale.

What's the difference between the flat brown and the mocha?

The mocha has more milk vs the flat brown having more of an espresso taste and less milk. My wife got the flat brown and I had a sip. It was pretty good but since I like their mocha so much....I can't switch lol

Are there outlets available for plugging in computers?

Unfortunately no. Seating area is kind of shared with other tenants in the Mix.

Do you carry oat milk?

Yes 🫡

Does Portola have wifi?

Yes but its insanely slow

What breakfast items are available now? do they still have donuts?

They no longer have warm foods. They do still have artisan pastries such as muffins, pop tarts, croissants, and a few cookies. I do not believe they have doughnuts.

Do they still wear lab coats? What happened to Theorem- is it closed for good?

No more lab coats. They've been gone for a couple of years. And Theorem is closed. They told me that it may become a food extension with with simple drinks. Will see....

When you enter, the location is huge! Tons of tables and seating. Nice! People are working, hanging out, and enjoying their food and drinks. I ordered a churro latte half sweet and a deluxe avocado toast. The latte was delicious. Sweetness level was just right for me. I don't like super sweet drinks. The avocado toast was also great. There was so much flavor from the egg and bacon and seasonings. It was a little hard to eat out of the to go container, but I made it work. It could easily be shared depending how hungry you are. I love that I didn't feel rushed here. It seems they expect people to come and hang out for awhile. Can't wait to return! I'm eyeing the biscuit and a matcha next time.

They are also dog friendly! It's also located across South Coast Plaza, so you can grab a great drink and go shopping! The only downside of the place is that there's little parking options. The front parking is supposed to be "20 mins only" and then if those 6 spots are full then you have to park in the parking garage across the street. Make sure to get it validated!!

L&L is located in a huge industrial complex with tons of parking (not sure how it is during weekdays though when the other businesses are open). The coffee shop is HUGE with plenty of seating and from the looks of it- lots of regulars hanging out and enjoying their sip. Walk in and fall in line to select your coffee of choice. You can scan their QR code of items - just wish prices were posted too. L&L roasts their beans and after just one sip, you can taste the difference! I had a vanilla latte while hubby had their toffee latte. As it turns out they make their own toffee syrup which is amazing!!! They also have a great selection of foods- burritos, avo toast, quiche, a variety of bagels and a nice assortment of scones, muffins and croissants. We shared a chorizo burrito filled with potato, egg, cheese, chorizo then toasted. It came with 2 different sauces - and cool and creamy cilantro and a smokey mocajete. This too was delicious and we were so glad to have ordered this. Staff were super friendly, welcoming and very helpful. All good vibes here! Look forward to returning!!!

What is not to love about this spot?…read more Easy and free parking for as long as you need it? Sign me up! Extensive drinks menu. I love love love their matcha and actually get my at-home espresso beans here. They are perfectly roasted and the espresso comes out smooth. I also have had their avocado toast. It is so good but I never finish it haha because it is big. Totally worth to try. They have large tables which are perfect to host coworking sessions or just to come and work. I think I've only had like a small instance where the internet got a little slow but other than that this is a pleasant spot to visit. You can also rent a study/conference room from the church. I sent a message before because I needed a spot to do my final oral exam virtually. There is a small fee but unfortunately no one got back to me. There is a QR code that takes you to a site where you fill out a form to request the space. Now, these requests are handled specifically by the church not the coffee spot. Although it is in the same area. The staff is super friendly. The restrooms are always clean. Handicap friendly. Not necessarily kid friendly because a lot of people come here to study and work, and its also all concrete and hazards for the small ones, but I have seen people do like babies on strollers type of gathering.

One thing you need to know is this place is small. Like I would say if you could fit six people in there you'd be doing good. That being said, this place has some of the best coffee I've had! Most big name corporate coffee places Overkill the roasting of the beans. That makes coffee bitter and almost screaming from milk and sugar. I ordered a latte, and it was one of the smoothest coffees I have had in my life.. Plus the atmosphere is very laid-back and cool, you definitely don't feel like you need to have a tie to come in here, or spend a lot of money. The coffee is very well priced, and just a general cool place space to hang. Bottom line? Easy, friendly, familiar in the best way. I don't come in often enough, but every time I do it feels like I belong here. Jim, the proprietor, is a big reason why, welcoming from my first visit. Matt, pictured here, I see more often on my Saturday runs. He's present minded and clearly cares about his customers and his craft. That energy carries through the whole space. Great coffee is one thing, but great music seals the deal. Today Matt's playlist was from 1946, and it somehow fit perfectly. Relaxed, cool, curious. Also the latte he brewed was on point - rich, smooth, and the just-right temp. And he refilled my own three jars with whole beans, to help with my goal of sustainability. I originally found Wilson Coffee through my connection to Chris and Jessica, the former owners of Amis de la Terre, a zero waste shop that I (and their many followers) still miss. There's a shared spirit here. Community minded and intentional. I'm really glad this place exists. Pro tip: pull around to the parking lot behind Eller Bakery for the Wilson Coffee VIP parking spot shown in my photo.rdu

I've been told that there's new ownership and changes with ingredients (which doesn't bother me) yet everything tastes and looks terrible now. Croissants have huge gaping holes, there's a jalapeño cream cheese croissant and it's just a croissant with a block of cold cream cheese in it..., mushy carrot cake that's barely fully baked, the only pastry that I really enjoyed was the yuzu blood orange danish. Also the food for breakfast and brunch it's really disappointing... since opening they have had the same exact menu with no new menu items, no creativity and just outright bland it so desperately needs a change. The absolute ONLY reason why I gave this review 3 stars instead of 1 is because of the sourdough country loaves... WOW, I would say it's the best bread in OC and the only reason that I'd come back. So if you're looking for a quality sourdough loaf definitely come in for that.... Other than that stay far away from this place and it hurts me to say that now because I saw such potential in this place.

You see everything is made with quality, and with a constant turn around of house made product. It is a cute and quaint spot with limited parking. We came here on a Sunday afternoon, ordered the benedict (perfect poached eggs, hollandaise pretty good), the egg sandwich (on croissant), and the breakfast wrap. The breakfast wrap really surprised me because it was wrapped in a crepe. Very good and tasty. Lattes and coffee are excellent quality. It's not often that I feel a business who does super well should be at 4 stars instead of 5, but I would say for how small this place is, the service is just okay, and I think the prices are quite high for certain things. You will be serviced quickly, at least in the time I've been here, but I think this place has room for improvement - but that's just my opinion. It's good, but I'm not blown away. I would still recommend giving this place a try, because their croissants are wonderful as it the bread - but hard to compete with a few other well known bakeries.
