African Fusion Restaurant - Lots of good food and amazing price

I say skip the make at home version, because this restaurant will make it for you for a very fair price, and with no fuss whatsoever. We ordered a range of stews along with jollof rice. I asked for everything to be mildly spiced (other than the designer stew, which is largely habanero peppers and so can not be mild!) Everything was well seasoned, freshly prepared, and filling. We ate outside with a friend and the warmth of the pepper stew helped keep us distracted from the cold. Our favorite thing was actually the meat pies. They are homemade with a sweet dough and a delicious meat and potato filling. They are also a bargain at $5 for two hand sized pies. They would make an amazing lunch on their own and were just as delicious at room temperature as they were fresh from the oven. I do have to warn you about ordering the chin chin dessert. It is delicious, and you will wish you had more once it's gone. Order it early in the weekend in case you need to run back for more by Sunday night, or you'll have to wait almost a week for the restaurant to reopen. Go get yourself some fufu!

I had dinner a Casablanca with my husband and in laws last Saturday when we spent the day exploring…read moreNew Castle and Wilmington, and it was quite the experience. From the outside, it doesn't look like much; in fact, it looks like a bit of a dive from outside. But when you walk in, you are transported. The design of the restaurant is so special - community tables, pillows, tapestries, waterfall features, tiles, and belly dancing. The food was a little inconsistent. We shared many dishes: Bastilla (baked layers of filo dough, eggs, chicken, almonds, sprinkled with cinnamon and powdered sugar); hummus (chickpeas, tahini, crushed garlic, lemon juice, sprinkled with paprika and olive oil, served with pita bread); Spanakopita; salad trio (eggplant salad, cucumber and tomato salad, and carrot salad); lamb tagine (stew of lamb, onions, and roasted peppers topped with honey and served with rice); Moroccan chicken with harissa cumin sauce; mujaddara (cracked bulgur wheat cooked with lentils and caramelized onions); and mint tea. I wish they didn't serve bottled waters, and the food was mostly good but not the most consistent. Our mujaddara wasn't served with the yogurt sauce listed on the menu, and the lamb with the tagine was incredibly fatty, making some of it inedible. The mint tea was really really really sweet - like syrup! I also wish the bastilla had a little less powdered sugar (I like on the dish, but it was A LOT of powdered sugar), and it was quite dry. But the eggplant salad, carrot salad, hummus, and mujaddara (even without the yogurt sauce) were great. I would happily have eaten just those dishes. They were busy - it's a popular place - but service was also a challenge. It took us almost a half hour to get the check and pay. I had to ask for the bill twice and then it still took a while to get it, for it to get picked up, and for it to come back to us. It's pretty bad if I'm considering walking up to the bar to get the check and pay. I loved the ambiance and the character. I loved that you can't tell how amazing it's going to be inside when you see the outside of the building - it's a surprise for sure. Our experience was that the food was a bit inconsistent, but it certainly was a fun meal.

Dinner and a show, I'm down! The show was good, but the food was just fine. Everything leaned too sweet for my liking. Our group of 4 got the $30 each 7 course family style meal. Spicy (not even that spicy!! (2/5 spice level IMO)) chicken and the eggplant dish at the beginning were my favorite dishes.

I asked for medium heat and it wasn't really spicy at all. I'm Caribbean and no stranger to African spices, it wasn't really spicy to me. I might go up a level next time. I'm not complaining, but this information could be helpful to others. I asked for both sauces to try, they were both really good. The red one was really spicy and the white was a good blend for the food if you want to tone it down. The food was really good and I would def order again.

The flavor of the egusi was very unique and something I've never had before. It was spicy, nutty, and filled with umami flavor. I could not stop eating it! The chicken leg inside was SO tender and delicious. It was a generous portion as well, I was able to share it with my bf and we still had leftovers for the day after (both the fufu and the egusi). As for the chicken suya bowl, I believe we had the jollof rice with plantains, chicken, and cabbage and onions with suya suya sauce. The jollof rice was seasoned and flavorful. The chicken was tender and brought a bit of a kick. The suya suya sauce was mild but creamy and paired well with the cabbage and inions. The plantains were a bit sweet but they were tasty and helped cut a bit of the oil. I would definitely recommend this place and would come back to try other dishes. So good!
