Upon walking in, we were met with the voice of Canada's greatest singer - Celine Dion. Weird for an Indian restaurant but they make up for it with the Indian soap op's on the TV's? Perhaps. Decor is nothing to write home about but that's fine with me. On to the food which I was pleasantly surprised about. We shared three dishes: - Lamb n jalfraize ($14) - lamb cooked with onion, green/red peppers, onion and slightly spicy gravy. Maybe they make it spicier (which would be good) but my parents can't tolerate much heat so they asked for mild. Good dish but we always order lamb dishes. - Mango chicken ($14) - chicken in a tangy mango sauce. Didn't find the mango sauce to have enough tanginess to it. Could have used more mango but still tasty. - Aloo & palak ($11) - aloo cooked in a puree of spinach and fenugreek. This dish was my favourite. Spinach puree was light but had that perfect puree texture to it when you ate it. YUM. - Side of tandoori roti ($2) - not what I was expecting. Taste reminded me of pita bread but more bit and thickness to it. Not the roti I was expecting to have which I've had in Malaysia. Stick with the naan bread. All our entrees came with choice of naan bread or rice so we ordered two naan's and one rice. Naan bread were great - fluffy, hot with a nice bit of crunch to it. Prices are very, very reasonable and I like how they include rice/naan with your entrees unlike other Indian restaurants in the city. Definitely will be coming back to try their prix fixe menu ($16 per person). Note - their buffets are only during lunch and I guess weekends. Now, whose brave enough to try their chinese menu (the other half of the menu!)

This place is where the old Lessard library branch used to be (which now has been converted to a mosque, crazy!). A buddy of mine and I decided to check out Chutney for lunch on a Saturday. We arrived at about 12:30pm and we were the first people to set foot in the restaurant. It wasn't very busy while we were there, with only three other groups coming in (two individuals and one family). By the time we left, they were setting up the buffet, with an intriguing selection of options to choose from. Next time! That or try their breakfast specials (weekends only). - 2x Vegetable samosa ($1.00 each) - our vegetable samosa's came out piping hot. Made in house and fresh, these were easily worth the $1.00 price tag. Should have got more! The mint chutney dip it came with was tasty but not spicy. - Naan bread ($1.99) - the naan bread was cut into four decent sized pieces, which was enough for both of us to share. This one was a little more robust and chewier, but it was, of course, perfect to soap up with the goat korma. - Goat korma ($14.99) - the goat was tender, flavourful and fell off the bone. We asked them about the different variations (there's also achari, curry, karahi, palak and vandaloo to choose from) and decided to go with the korma, which was slightly spicy and is a mix of yoghurt, cream, nuts and seeds. Seriously, goat is so gooooooooooood. - Vegetable biryani ($9.99) - the vegetable biryani was simple but helped balance out the rest of our meal. It came with a side of yoghurt raita, which we didn't really touch as it didn't add much to the dish. - Gulab jamun - we were each given a gulab jamun, on the house, to end our meal! Love freebies, so nice of them. These were light and most importantly, not overly sweet (which normally is the case). Service was super friendly. They ask you how spicy you want your meal to be (we went with a 6 but I'd recommend at least an 8 or 9 if you want it to be actually spicy). They were doing some renos in the back - according to our waiter, they are planning to grill meats and even have pizza soon! SWEET. If you're looking for a hidden gem, check out Chutney.

They specialize in South Indian cuisine, specifically dosas. We came on Saturday for an early dinner but pretty much had the place to ourselves. The staff here are super friendly and we chatted with one of the son's who was keen to converse with us. Very genuine guy. They offer buffets for a really reasonable price. It's $13.99 on weekdays and $15.99 on weekends. That is cheaaaaaaaaap! - Mango lassi ($3.49) - we decided to get one to share but L ended up wanting to get her own after she had a sip. She's never had one before! Missing out on the good things in life. The mango lassi was light, creamy and just sweet enough. - Papadum - not sure if the papadum came with one of our dishes but I think it was complimentary. Whetted our appetite while we waited for the main event. - Mysore masala dosa ($9.99) -this dosa came out differently than I'm normally used to but dammmmmmmmmmn, the filling was absolutely delicious. The potato inside had the perfect amount of heat and the spice mixture made you want to immediately eat another bite. - Vegetable biryani ($9.99) - the biryani was a solid choice; just look at those fried garlic bits. Harmoniously well balanced and flavourful. - Uthappam ($10.49) - Indian pizza made with rice and lentil flour. I've only had uthappam one other time in Calgary (see Raj Palace). This one was much different but just as good. Light, fluffy and a touch of sweetness from coconut flakes. - Vegetable masala curry ($8.49) - rich, creamy masala curry but not too heavy. Good variety of vegetables. I like how it's completely different than what you're normally used to with northern Indian food. - 3x Roti ($1.99 each) - three roti's were waaaaay too much for the three of us but we powered through all of them. Not a single piece of roti was left unscathed. - Gulab jamun ($2.99) - milk balls soaked in sweet syrup. Not too sweet; two to share was the perfect way to end our meal. I really appreciated how hot and fresh these were. There's an abundance of Indian places south side but this one is worth checking out. Next visit, we'll come back to try out the buffet. And I don't even like buffets!
